Speaker cab grill paint?

I realize that the traffic here is pretty thin...but- I thought I'd throw this out anyway.

I'm getting a speaker cab with a grill that needs painting. I'm trolling for ideas. Plain black is always there, but I'm wondering if there's something neat or artsy I could do, maybe with spray cans? Any ideas?

(and, yes, I already considering silkscreening the picture of Shania in the catsuit on it...)

  • So...............? Whatchya decide on, turn out good?

Seriously late for the party.. But Black with a copy of the installed speakers painted on may have been an option..
  • When I worked at NREL one of the engineers was studying stress in wind turbine blades. At one point he painted an entire blade with a liquid crystal paint that changed color as the forces on the blade changed through the sweep of the blade (wind pressure at the top of the sweep can be MUCH higher than at the bottom), helping locate the parts of the blade that got bent the most.

I wonder if the sound pressure levels from your speaker would be significant enough to give you a nice psychedelic patterns on your grille if you used something like that?

Aren't you in Colorado, Shredd? Perhaps a trip down to Golden to see if the folks at NREL have a spare can of that paint lying around somewhere is in order! (come to think of it, the wind test center is closer to Boulder)

Ha ha ha I was absolutely thinking about that, But didn't know there was a paint that did that. I was thinking about pressure lights though.. like the neon glows you put on a valve stem... but didn't think it to viable so I didn't throw it out there... Didn't think he would play at a volume to push em, if they could be made to work.

    But paint! that glows Mmmmm

THAT is just flipped out. I would LOVE a speaker cab that changed colors based on what/how loud you play!!!
But no, guys...I still haven't painted it...I could do plain black, but am hoping for something more fun...

\"More Fun?\" ... Really? ... Isn't the music the fun part? Why not just do a Gary Glitter tribute show.... & no one will care about the amp(s) they'll be having fun! ..

Has anyone seen Shredd? .....Uh, I think he's upstairs with his 'fun' amp.... He playing by himself again?

    I know. I know .. couldn't resist ..................
  • Haw haw, you're a riot Rawb...I guess that while I could easily paint the grill semi-gloss black (it's perforated metal), something that was notable on stage - like Glitter! - would be \"fun\".
Speaking of fun...I'm playing bass in a really fun band, kinda like 'taus was...
And no, Shania is STILL not returning my phone calls. And my attempts to use Anne Hathaway to make her jealous are not working. What's a feller to do???

I wasn't aware of this. So in 20/20 retrospect I guess a fun amp is ... in order!
I mean really, logic would only dictate that a fun amp can only make for a more 'funner' band experience!

How fun is your band... stage show include glitter an unicorns?

But seriously folks..... Glad to hear you got some mates together! What banner you guys playing under? How about a link? You guys (gals?) have a band page out there?

Yeah, it's amazing to get four guys together in a band...I live in a tiny, tiny town - barely 2000 people - but lots of talented players. But to put a band together is amazing...there's only 3 or 4 around.
Four guys, drummer, me on bass, a git'rist, and a vox/frontman; everyone sings backups. We play upbeat, fun, danceable music. Some oldies/classics, some newer stuff (our drummer is a pup). No glitter, unicorns, leather jumpsuits, or hair.
But we are a pretty solid unit. Pretty tight, considering our challenges: the vox has a new g/f that he can't peel himself off of; the git'rist has a \"real\" job that requires him to travel a decent amount, limiting our practice time; the drummer works a ton and is recently divorced, and is howring around a LOT. Thankfully, I have absolutely nothing else to do in life and can commit the time.
We did our first gig, a freebie, in January; it KILLED. We're hoping to do some more this winter before everyone scatters for \"off-season\", but we'll surely have a busy summer.
We're called SoulWorx. No website or fb page yet; some of the g/friends are working on that. We'll try to have a couple of videos up so people can see us and hopefully hire us!!! (and perhaps Shania will see it and decide she can't live without me... :P )
  • Oops.. Sorry . time flys ..think i'll try the notify me option

So, does CO. still allow smoking in bars?clubs? If so, with the recent law changes must be pretty cloudy in them venues! Just get a glass of water and enjoy the night

Well get them g/friend goupies going and get some links for us...

So we can see the music!

OK: nope, no smoking (of any kind) in bars/clubs/venues...if there was, I wouldn't set foot in one, even to play. It's bad enough to have to deal with obnoxious drunks yelling \"FREEBIRD\"...
But with those 'law changes', there's a ridiculous amount of weed being consumed, everywhere you go. So now you have the idiot stoner demographic to compliment the sloppy drunk contingent. It's thrilling; but it peeses me off to have to spend time keeping idiots away from the equipment, when I could be pursuing drunken hotties.
Thankfully, there's plenny drunken hotties that can be talked into nudity by enthralling discussions about the deep artistic and philosophic merits of playing reggae versions of \"Traveling Band\" and \"Born To Be Wild\".

But, yeah...a couple of the girlfriends do the iPhone video thing, so we're hoping to get some clips that I could post...we're sort of \"auditioning\" for a gig tomorrow (a club owner is going to come watch us play an open mic...). Stand by, kids!
  • Sounds like fun.

I can only add to the part about pot smoking states. I was in Denver just a few weeks ago and I could not believe the amount of pot I smelled around clubs, the hotel etc. Tons of buzzed people at night.

    Give an inch..............

You have NO idea, Mike...I live in a small mountain town, and you smell it EVERYWHERE. On the street, in the hallways of buildings; there's a 'dispensary' on every block. You mostly notice the smell when it's MISSING. They're already writing articles in the paper about how much money the town is making on taxes.

Which is all fine with me, if a weed-dazed hottie poaches me after a show and tells me how I was so amazing that she just HAS to roast another blunt and then lick chocolate sauce off my body to satisfy her munchy's...
  • I had recently read an article about how it may be legal by state standards.. it's sill illegal by federal standards. But the part that got me rolling on the floor is these idiots are smoking on the job, then surprised when they get canned... ie .. truck drivers for example.. take a drug test an come up positive for thc .... drinking is legal, one can't drink n drive an 18 wheeler though.. thus comes the gray area.. there is no way to test for pot if one just got stoned, like alcohol breathalizer

The whole thing makes me laugh.... a rose by any other name is stil a rose.. legal or not, a dope head is still a dope head. Oh and the tax money? More smoke an mirrors... they said the same thing about casino's.

Wonder when someone gets popped in a drug test, if because they're smoking everywhere if contact buzz will be a bonafide excuse..

So anyways,Shedd didn't you have a thread on painting a cab grill? I say in view of recent events.. paint a big ole jane leaf on ut!
  • \Rawb\ wrote:

This thread was originally about my speaker grill...to recap, I got a 1x15\" bass cab that has a perforated metal grill, and I wanna paint it...I could go plain semi-gloss black, but since I'm already the most boring person I know, I wanted to do something more interesting...sparkle/glitter paint to pick up the lights; some interesting logo/symbol (I considered the DSOTM prism); anything I could paint on the metal grill material...was just trolling for ideas...
  • Sounds cool shredd. Not sure I could do well in CO if its like that now.

I had to lol at some states though supporting the mj legalization still ban poppy seeds for pastries and breads.

  • I had to lol at some states though supporting the mj legalization still ban poppy seeds for pastries and breads.

Well that's because they're blaming the 'H' epidemic on opiate prescriptions now... How terrible to stop in at the local bakery get a kaiser roll then the next day your a bonafide runner... Geesh I can see the logic in in those states!

Ok shredd... A big O jane leaf painted with glitter... with glitter painted music notes in avaible spaces...

Hm. Sorry 'bout that. Took me a while to figure out the tech challenges of posting a video.
    Here ya go:

This was one of 3 songs we did...we absolutely crushed them, had the whole crowd of about 150 roaring and dancing. We had 6 songs prepared, but we got booted offstage after our \"allotted\" 3 songs/15 minutes limit...even though other bands (who'd probly been sucking the host's dyk) were allowed to play dismal, rambling sets for 30 and 40 minutes. Bitter? Who, me??? :P

Sorry about the crappy audio...the guy shooting w/my iPhone had his thumb over the mic half the time. But you get the idea...

I'm playing bass in this band; that's me with the incredibly stylish hat, stage left. :P

  • Sorry Rawb...I'm afraid I have neither patience nor interest in this bullsheet...social media, technology...whatta pile of horse puckey.
I checked it, and it says the privacy setting for this post is \"public\"...but it also says that you must be a member of the \"Guitar Talk\" group on FB to view.

I \"shared\" it on my own personal FB page (https://www.facebook.com/adam.sherman.54?fref=photo), which is available to the public. Try there? Everybody should be able to see it there...

LMAO .... OK, shredd. Now I know your messing with me or it be that wacky second hand smoke your inhaling up thar in Colorado.

But hey... thanks for the feeling... Like some wierd internet FB creepster/stalker.. No band on stage vid on your FB page... But the musician infestation was funny! And I ain't going through a 100 goups titled guitar talk to find what one you mentioned.

Thanks for the effort.... just currious as to what kind of outfit you got into.. Forgot about your pup, he's good looking dog! Not to sure about that hotdog leash though!
  • Hey Rawb...sorry for the hassle - I think it's this \"closed group\" permissions BS. Like I said, I have very little patience for/interest in the 'intricacies' of \"social media\"...if I'm going to jerk myself off, it ain't gonna be by using my computer keyboard, know wha' I sayin'???

So...I uploaded the video to my own FB page from my home computer, rather than \"sharing\" it from the closed-group page it was on. So you should be able to see it on my FB page, (https://www.facebook.com/adam.sherman.54). Hope that does it...if you see it, lemme know whatcha think!!!

And yes...my dog is the most awesome living thing on Earth. If you doubt it - consider this: I wouldn't trade him for a week in Tahiti with Shania, a jumbo-size tube of blueberry hot lube, and a pint of Ben & Jerry's. :P
  • WoW.. I think .. WoW .. y'all did good! The best part I liked was the end. That big O smile on your face says it all!.... Having Fun. :D I also thought how cool, that you's recruited Grizzly Adams to keep the beat for ya's!

But I didn't see any glitterized jane leaf :? LoL

Thanks for sharing it was fun to watch. Sometimes I think I might like to get into some outfit, but I can't count to 4. and that causes people to tell me I suck and to go away! uh oney an a tooie an a uh ,, then I get lost!

Oh.... Did anyone yell out Free Bird?

At last...it works! Glad you got to see it. It was a fun night, even if we did get flocked on our time slot.

Grizzly Adams is actually Mr. Mellow Rasta dude...very cool guy, and is also a pro downhill mtn bike racer. One of the reasons our band is so fun is that it's good guys who get along, although we all put much effort into tolerating the lead singers' ego (I know...shocking!)

And no, no one yelled \"Freebird\"...my little town has a very high concentration of skilled and gifted musicians, and yelling \"freebird\" as anything other than a bad joke will get you beat like a rented mule...
  • Rastaman! Wow.... I was kinda thinking he was Jewish. In the vid it looks like he is sporting a yarmulke. ...

Frontman with ego... Your just saying that! regardless 3 outta 4 no ego, is doing pretty good. .... Other than I can't count.. Band politics probably biggest deterrant for me! Seen it get ugly to many times, and I know me! Somebody would be wearing a plank up beside their head! Ya, That's it.. I don't get no project going for the safety of all involved! LMAO...

Through it's probably easier now that my generation are grandparents now, an everyone is in it for fun/love.. And they know they ain't gonna \" make it \". Only hope now is to write a song someone might wanna buy! to make any money.

I wish you an your mates the best! And keep the live stage addiction under control! :D  More cowbell?

Nope...more like a 'do-rag. He's got the rasta dread thing going.

Yeah, the rest of us are pretty chill...the lead singer is a drama queen/head case. But the drummer is a sassy young 'un, and helps keep him in line, which is good, 'cuz the git'r player n me are both mellow doods. It's gotten ugly a time or two, but overall it ain't bad. Then again, we're only about 6 months in.
BTW: my favorite musician joke ever:
Q: How many lead singers does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A: Only one. He just holds the light bulb, and the world revolves around him.

I'd agree...we're all in it for fun, not because any of us fancy the idea that we're the next Barry Manilow or anything. :P Although the lead singer does take it pretty seriously...
I wrote a bunch of stuff (see my soundclick site, in sig) I thought was pretty cool...but no one has bought any of them. Guess I haven't exactly tapped into the market. Guess I need to neuter myself, take estrogen injections, and become a bratty drunken drug-addled behavior case, so I can compete w/justin beeber.
