How can GC be so lame?!?

  • so I call the local GC just on the slight chance they would have one in stock. They answer the phone and I ask, Do you have the SKB case in stock that fits a Firebird? (Your gonna love this) They reply, You wanna by a car?

I'm guessin it was a drummer who answered.

  • Well if it was a drummer who answered the phone, If he didn't know what a Firebird is, He should have at least had brains enough to put me on hold and ask somebody. Actually I don't think he even heard all of what I asked him which seems fairly typical anymore asking questions
over the hard line. I'm sure I should have asked for someone who knew about guitar cases although I thought there was a reason it was called GUITAR CENTER. What was I thinking?
  • ...if you wanted to buy a pick for your axe, would they send you down the street to the hardware store's lawn and garden center?
  • Yeah he probably would have sent me to the hardware store. And if I would have asked for strings he probably would have sent me to the nearest kite shop or sewing center. I suppose a Pontiac in a flight case wouldn't classify as carry on.

Unless you work at GC and you're buying the ticket for your boss.
  • Stores like these, allow me the rare opportunity to feel like the musical genius. :P
BTW...I'm the guy who detunes all the guitars before I leave.

:lol: whether it's a board sale's clerk or a self proclaimed guitar god. Putting these axes in an alternate tuning.... can be a drag at times!

Stopped by someones house once, super novice player! Let him try my guitar that was traveling with me. Looked at me with the funniest face and said.... he couldn't believe I would have a guitar so out of tune!! LoL it was in a low C open tuning! LoL :lol:

I'll bring it up here!! I been reading that best buy is going to start selling guitars! What ya'll think?! Competition for gc or just more over handled equipment?

    Both.
I heard the same thing, and my reaction was -

We're talking about merchandising, not music or musical instruments. This is a way for large companies that have $ in mind to make their profit margin quota. It's not like they're providing some incredible service to the world, by making mediocre, mass-prouced \"name instruments\" \"available\" to a wider public.
It's about sucking people who wouldn't otherwise have sought out a git'r pick one up and go \"hey....if Elvis Costello can get wimmin with onena dees...well, heck, I'll buy one...\"
  • I think it's a good thing. I don't care how much money BB or GC makes. Bottom line is, if it gives good old fashioned competition to the others it will benefit all of us...not to mention more stores available to those who live in the hinterlands.

(I think they should put a music store in Vons, Ralphs, Piggly Wiggly , etc. so we all have something to do while the wives are shopping). :D

    JV
  • I think it's terrible - for the simple reason that these stores will treat git'rs as simple commodities to be stocked and sold, no different than toasters or bath-mats.
We all know that git'rs are much more lively objects, they have \"personalities\" and needs and quirks. You think some kid at BB or Sam's Club or Piggly Wiggly is gonna care about tuning a git'r or keeping it clean or whteher it falls over and dents itself on the harmonica/guitar pick rack??

Elvis Costello gets less women than Shredd....

Oh....I thought he \"played for the other team\".....

    GC....Hmmmm...
They also own Musicians Friend, Music 123, Vintage Guitars.com, and many, many other on-line stores..

They have basically become the Wal Mart of Guitar Stores.
    They have a new Non-Haggle price policy..(In other words,,\"We aint giving you a discount\"..)..

They rarely have anything as far as archtops, and every kid and his brother has played every axe in the store. (They ought to sell them as USED gear..)..

Not to mention their monopolistic collaboration with Gibson. Nobody, in Houston carries Gibson but Guitar Center and Fullers Guitar..(Fullers is a mom and Pop and gives excellent service..)..All other Gibson dealers have had to drop the Gibson product because of GC & Gibson's policies..
Give me Ebay anyday of the week, over those guys.

I Just Bought a New Gibson ES 137. I got it for about 500 dollars less than list from our local store (Grandmas music) instead of GC where I bought my Songwriter deluxe. Our local store was just as unproffesional as GC. but MONEY honey talks in the end.

    heres how it went down:
I find said guitar on shelf for 500 dollars less that the MF price online.
    I ask why so low.
He says \"just because it was on the ashelf for a while and they want to move inventory.
Turns out it was damaged a bit is why!!
Now thats no biggie for me, I can fix little stuff but when I noticed the chip the guy says \"oh thats why its so low priced!\" I said thats not why you said it was on sale a min ago, it doesnt say \"AS IS\" your selling it as \"new\" so just get your Gibson dealer to send you another one and I'll pick it up later... he throws a fit and says how the store sucks and how hes a \"real musician\" that should'nt even be working behind the counter...man I dont have time for that \"wannabe rock star shredder crap!\" :P GROW UP! ya he actually is a great shredder ...but unfortunaly \"Dragon Force\" doesnt need another member (who's pushing 35) so get over it! and enjoy being a musician in whatever you do in life. The actual chances of any musician no matter how versed you are in your craft to get a job touring in a major act is slim at best. LOL! I was at a Talor show at the store at the time and some of the guys wanted to know if the store was going to \"make it right\" heck NO they charged me extra to get it fixed before I bought it...oh well anyway I bought the fiddle getting it back from my luthier friday and am way excited to finally have a couple of great Gibsons in my stable. I had to sell the SG on Ebay to afford the ES-137 but I'm much more of a smooth blues and acoustic guy these days. I think music stores have become just like used car salesman...watch your back jack! pics to come. 8)
  • That's cool Danny Boy! I'll be lookin for those pics 8) Hey did you happen to see the pic's of my New American Deluxe FMT Strat? Man is that guitar georgeous! & the more I play it the more I see & hear just how awsome & high quality this guitar is. I'm stoaked I waited like 4 month's for that guitar & I must say that it was WELL WHORTH IT!! 8)
  • Oh....I thought he \"played for the other team\".....
    Gasp. Say it ain't so!
Then again, I watched \"The Spy Who Shagged Me\" the other night, in which Elvis makes a cameo...and he ain't lookin' so manly...

PS congrats ODB! The 137 is a tasty ax, and i'd sure as he|| sell an SG for one. Lookin' forward to the pix!
PS enjoyed the story about the Slash-wannabe.
  • GROW UP! ya he actually is a great shredder ...but unfortunaly \"Dragaon Force\" doesnt need another member (who's pushing 35) so get over it! and enjoy being a musician in whatever you do in life. More like, less than slim. ODB, that is right on the mark, can't tell you how many monster players there are out here who are in just that frame of mind. Some got over it, many have not.

I agree that, ultimately, price tag is the bottome line, unless you have unlimited disposable income.

Congrats on the new Gibson bro.
