I don't use the amp much since I have been recording pop/folk/country songs, but once the Hendrix and heavy stuff come out, I'll be warming up the MusicMan. The big Peavy bass amp only gets used in jams now. I like having a full PA but it doesn't get used as much while I'm on these recording blitzs
I've been running my acoustic & electrics through the GNX3000, then directly to the board (2 tracks, left & right) I have some very nice mics when the time comes :)
I also do most of my recording directly...haven't fired up the Peavey in ages. I guess if I were a tone snob (and adequately talented to be one  ) I'd wanna mic my amp with one of my good mics and record that. But I'm not trying to impress anyone and I'm too lazy to do it, plus I don't have room for a sandwich, let alone a git'r amp. :?
I play almost everyghing through my GNX - bass, git'rs, sometimes even my Roland - and go from there through the board to my Tascam. There's been times I've recorded whole tunes - or major parts of them - right on the GNX, and either mixed them there, or played parts back one at a time onto my Tascam, for mixing after.
Chix dig complicated procedures, right??

Aright so maybe I was a bit heavy in the self deprecation department. But for years all I had was the cube and the F/L III, so I reckon I am still in that frame of mind.

Parashredder - is that a window in the wall? Is that for a control room or a vocal closet? Why not post in progress pics of your stage ... some of us might be in assisted living accomodations by the time it gets done!

Cyclonic - old? dang, wish I was 40 again!

Hudson - That was what I was gonna ask. Hows that fender sound with the gnx? Edwards guitar? <--- oh , o'k ESP = Edwards: Japaneese market only. Hear their made better and with better material than ESP's Same Company :) E-bay purchase? http://espguitars.co.jp/edwards/index.html

No kidding. When my ex was moanin' and cryin' about turning 40, I explained to her that plenty of people would LOVE to be turning 40.

was an ebay special =D customs had a field day (dont ask :? ). the GNX sounds the nuts run straight through the fender. doesnt interfere with the tone at all. And i can always go back to the fender for its awesome clean channel.

Various cables, stands ect. Including a passive radiator amp stand that I copied from one I saw on the internet, makes any open backed amp sound sooo much better. I also made a sort of portable vocal boot… sits on a speaker stand behind your mic to asorb reflection…it works very well.

  • I thought I had this uploading and downloading thing down. I'll post the pic asap

Holy Cats. That's a pretty tasty array of gear. 8)
It's awesome how much of your stuff you built yourself...I especially like the idea of the \"portable vocal booth\". I might haveta try that. How 'bout a pic?

Plus...I was wondering - what kind of tone do you get out of the rake?
  • thanks shredd, I appreciate the comments. As far as my little vocal booth goes , its in the pic right above my rack....sitting on my workbench. It attaches to one of my speaker stands and I position it right behind the mic I'm recording. I dont know if you can make it out from the pic but it is semi- circular and I jist used eggcrate foam as an absorber. It works quite well at reflecting ambient noise as well as absorbing any reflective sound. It makes for a very \"dry\" vocal recording. I use it in front of my amp as well. I just set it on the floor in front of the amp with a mic in between, works wonders!
P.s....its not my idea, i saw something similar to it on MF and thought to myself, why spend the money...i can make that. I guess its just the yankee in me.

BTW...the rake sounds great through the GNX4...doednt everything sound great plugged into the GNX :P

Now to find more time to get some tracks down...

    Rawb,
That pic was taken in my old house, last year. On the other side of the wall that you see, the \"window\" just goes to the matching brick bar, fireplace, and home theater room.

I just moved into a bigger house, with a bigger yard, and plenty of garagespace for my musclecar collection, and future stage area.

Since I'm still unpacking, the stage isn't priority, but I am using my full basement, temporarily, instead of just the little area you see at the old house.

I'll post pics as I get them, though...
  • Tucopeat, I can take a guess and probably guess wrong, what woods did you use or are they all the same with different finishes? I have to agree that is awsome that you built your own collection! :D Will I find you and cyclonic on a luthier forum? Wish I had the time and equipment to build one.

I am looking for a few more acoustics to keep set up in different tunings and a couple more electric just cuz I want them!

Once again a nice colections you have. :D
  • Thanx for the comments Rawb, I have almost as much fun making them as I do playing them. From left to right in the photo, #1 is a soft maple body with a walnut top and is the only one with a 24 3/4\" scale, #2 has a mahogany body with a hard maple top with custom laminated walnut pickguard, #3 is a mahogany body with a one piece cherry top, and #4 has a five piece mahogany/maple body with a maple cap and on top of that is a veneer of 50 year old sapale pommelle, it has a wonderful three dimensional quilted look to it. they all have maple necks, 25 1/2\" scale. They all have different tonal characteristics and they each have their own niche. My wife would like me to sell a couple of them, some days i agree with her and then the next I change my mind...I have 5 more in various stages of completion, maybe i'll sell those....maybe not :p . If anyone is interested I will make them to order, whatever you want.

And BTW...a wise man once you can never have too many guitars...or friends .

Ok here is my meger pile of toys. behind the kb is a 1964 Martin semi hollowbody electric w/Bigsby trem. and a cheap Ibinez bass.
  • Thanks for the pic ! Meager? Naw! I always wonder why we guitar people are so self deprecating!? But it is curiously satisfying

Wouldn't mind seeing some full pics of that Martin!

Rawb here she is 1964 Martin she's old and been in more bars than I could ever count. She belonged to my dad and my son (who plays) will get her when I am gone.

NeatO! You play her alot! It has been a while since I have read up on Martins foray into the electric market. Does she play and sound nice?
  • Yes she does play very nice. The sound is still good but weaker than it used to be. I don't play her nearly as much as I should :(
  • This is an ancient thread, but i thought i would bump it up to see if we might get a peek at some more studios .
