Dream Theatre has great technical abilty and I can appreciate it but they lose me I'm afraid...
EXACTLY.
It's a funny thing...i'm a big RUSH head, and everyone says that if you love RUSH you gotta love D/T, sort of by association.
Now, granted, there's some fine players in D/T, but I can honestly say I don't care a whit for it. I don't have any of their albums and every song of theirs I've ever listened to didn't do a thing for me. Maybe no one's turned me on to the good stuff yet, but it just seems over-written and melodramatic to me. And I'm one who usually digs \"heavy\" music. It's like they're trying to hard...to be trip-meisters or something, I don't know. It just don't float my boat. :?:
[Tal Rules\"]DEAN!!!!
Guys like to Tommy Emmanuel is the reason I started this thread. To be able to turn other guys on to different guitarists out there. I have to admit, I hadn't actually heard or seen any of his stuff until you posted these links.
My God!!!
Just an incredible player

Yeah...here is one more post...Classical Gas...If this dosent get u going, then nothing will.
ITs a great thread, There are some sick players out there. I have used all my down load quota for the month surfing the sites. I'm down to snail speed now...bummer
Here is my second...and as you might expect...mo Joe. But this is more educational, than entertaining. Here he is giving you some of his insights into guitar soloing. It is also nice to see and hear an artist like this open up their views and take on concepts they apply to their music.
This is 18 min. 22 sec. long....but very worthwile. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6100853196503866597&q=Joe+Satriani

The thing that I love the most about DT, is that after the 100th listen, you are still getting something different out of it. It's that complex. To listen once, and say... eh, doesn't do anything for me, is like looking at a fine work of art for 1 second and turning away. I don't believe you have given it enough of a chance after only one listen. I can easily see where someone would think \"these guys are trying too hard, or showing off\" after one listen. But I think you'll be doing yourself a favor, if you listen 15 or 20 more times  . If you still don't like it, I'll send you Heather Locklear's phone number
It took me a long time to warm up to Dream Theater. I'm used to Rush for prog music. After a while of giving DT a chance, I get it now and can't get enough of them. Sometimes, the songs that you don't warm up to at first are the ones that you like the best.

Nice Ovation in the background, that other fellow has!! But serious though
What an appropriate name for this man!!! God is truly with him!! That's what Emmanuel means.
God Bless!!

I've been a prog guy for a long time. From Yes, Rush, to early Genesis, ELP, Steely Dan, Marillion, and Queensryche.
Dream Theater is a variation of that art but heavier at times. Musical complexities with a bit of drama. Not received as well in the US perhaps. Most would see Poison sell out Coliseum, and maybe 3500-4000 at a Dream Theater show. Difference is it's a musicians fest.
Airplay is a battle and always changing. Like clothing styles and haircuts.
Playing clubs- 867-5309, Nickelback, gets em dancin. Spirit of Radio, YYZ medley has them pause.. then go WOW! Most know it's not that easy to do... you can mis-time Jenny Jenny, but one miscue on YYZ is a trainwreck.
Great picks Mike. 8) .
Rush, Dream theatre, type groups bring me back to when I was a young guy.
They kind of have a Mahivishnu, Zappa, Soft Machine, ELP, thing that I just find totally awesome. Those aint tunes they're playing. They're compositions and awesome at that with the timing involved between all the players coordinating as one unit to pull it off. And you're right. It only takes one mistake for the whole thing to fall apart. Just awesome to watch.
Dig it.. I saw Zappa 3 times and was just as amazed at his stuff as I am watching DT and Rush. Got me wanting to drag my old tired carcass out of the Savoy club with Wes and watch DT live..
Cool vids on both the Rush and the DT.. 8)
As for Kashmir.....
I've been ragging on lead singers a lot in this thread. Plant's one of the few I could listen to for hours. Kashmir not particularly one of my favorite Zep Tunes (More like \"Whole lotta love\") but it is cool to see Mr. Page play that old Dan Electro..
8)
Damnt Mike..
I think I got Dan Electro GAS watching that one..
Cool vids bud 8) 8) 8) ..

Yeah, I went to they're web site and checked out those new \"Baritone Guitars\" ...what a cool tone, and CHEAP (Plywood?)...I could buy 4 of them for the price of the PRS I'm saving for
I cant believe there's a video of \"YYZ\" (my favorite Rush tune!) available online-- for free--I was a huge \"Prog Head\" growng up, and that song always reminded me of mid-seventies King Crimson...now if I could just find a vid of Fripp's solo in Eno's \"St. Elmo's Fire\" (just devastating guitar playin...)
I'm going to start searchin for some of the early progressive stuff I have on vinyl...Alan Holdsworth...Brand X...801...
Alright, hang on! Shredd is getting too many women now. You need to share. They don't even have to be in the neighborhood of attractive either. Heck, even good personal hygiene is optional at this point.

I knew a dude who used to pick up homeless chicks, take them back to his room in the Barracks let them have a shower etc and take them for a feed in the mess hall. His reasoning was that they were both \"grateful\". Some people eh?

I've been waiting for a Hendrix Vid and it finally got posted..
I'd already used my 3 and this one rocks the house...
Geee....Aw Shucks...What can you say about Jimi that hasn't been said already..
One of my all time heros.. And yeah.. I've copied a few licks from him..
Thanks for the great post with Jimi doing his signature tune from one of his signature concerts. 8)
(Hint: Anyone Else) The Monterrey performance is unbelievable as well. 8) .
And make sure to tell Uncle Ted that I haven't forgotten him. Yeah... The Tedster can tear it up.
And I've gotten a case of SERIOUS GAS looking at him with that....
Damn..
What is it???? :?
An early L5CT with the pointed cutaway or a special signature Byrdland made just for Uncle TED???? :?
Gibson should make a Ted Nugent signature Brydland. He's been a huge advocant of that axe for years.. 8) .
Whatever it is he's playing....
I'm developing cerious GAS for it..
(A lot may have to do with the Flower Pot on the headstock. Jonesd for one for years.).. 8)
THAT'S FUNNY...!! You are too much man....I threw in that photo...
JUST to see if anyone would make any comment on the guitar!!!!!!!!!
Haha...I LOVE YOU BRO !! :P
Yeah...It's a Byrdland....and you gotta love those old Gibsons!!
I have a weakness for them hollowbodied electrics...but I don't own any.
I wanna ES 335...someday...hehheeeeeeeeeee.
...and a signiture NUGE Byrdland !!
( the rare sharp cutaway is called \"The Ted Nugent\" model. )
You guys who think Dream Theater is too technical should watch “The Spirit Carries On” from their Scenes from New York DVD (cant find it on You Tube). Amazing, amazing, amazing, and its not technical at all. They bring in the black gospel choir at the end. At the time they said it was the pinnacle of their career. Unfortunately James is a bit pitchy (as usual). Otherwise I might say it’s the pinnacle of rock music, period.
You betcha this deserves a BUMP.
One of the most fun threads we have...so thank you again Tal.
I did click on everyone's link, and watched them all. Then even browsed around for awhile. I could post a few more ofcourse. Who couldn't .. :P
When you remided me of Master Segovia. I went straight to that link.
We all owe him a debt of gratitude for making the guitar a serious instrument to be studied, and for guitarists to evolve as we have.
