wow g3456 we have almost identical tastes. im just getting into marillion after i heard petrucci talking about them. what albums do you recommend? ive got the one with easter (incredible song) and kaylee (?).
also - to the guy wondering about dream theater albums - scenes from a memory is this incredible rock opera and one of the best albums of all time imo. but their new album octivarium might be better. it takes a few listens, but it is totally totally awesome. unlike others, i think they have matured musically and i like their later albums better, although i didnt like train of thought - very one dimentional.
I probably should have put Marillion on my list too I've been listening to them forever but you can only put so many bands on a list. There's too much good music out there.

hey fellow canuck - what marillion albums do you suggest?
Absolutely Drew that's my favorite album then for me #2 Clutching At Straws and #3 Seasons End and then everything else but that's just my personal opinion. It's all fantastic!

No way you can list em all, I'll make a list... then see it and say \"oh man I forgot Him and Them, how could I ???\"
So, I will just spit one out and live with it.
Zep, Jeff Beck, Classical, VH, Frampton, Asia, Rush, Yes, GTR, ZEBRA,
I do NOT like the Beatles
Hmmm...
a couple of old blues players, I like some jazz.. the stuff that's not to \"out there\", SRV, Clapton, Page solo stuff, Plant solo stuff, Bowie,
Dokken, Whitesnake, Ratt, Early Malmsteen He Hee BIG HAIR!!
I HATED Poison, and Motley Crew., But liked White Snake and Ratt...
Go figure??
Queensrych, Megadeath, (Dont like Mattalica sp? can't even spell 'em)
SAVATAGE!!!
DT, Satch, early Via I don't know what happened, but I don't care for Via anymore... I loved his work on the Roth albums the best.
On the 'different end.. Cowboy Junkies, Gipsy Kings, Peter Gabriel, INXS, Robbie Robertson, Sade.
Now I listen to: DT, Cowboy Junkies, Classical, Audio Adrenaline, DC Talk, Kent Henry, Shaun Groves, Israel Houghton, Jars of Clay, Terry Kelly Band, Newsboys, Psallo, Sonic Food, Switchfoot, Skillet and
GNX USERS. I got to get the GNX CD's !! 8)
Hey, the bands I said I 'do not like', I am NOT saying they are not talented... I just do not like there stuff. So, don't get upset.
In elementary school I loved Iron Maiden, Metallica and Guns n Roses - still love 'em today.
Besides that I've got a quite large collection of more or less well known metal bands (ranging from so called True Metal, to power and melodic metal, to death, doom and trash metal and also a few black metal bands).
\"Recently\" (two years ago) I discovered Prog Rock: Porcupine Tree, Marillion, Spock's Beard, Alan Parsons Project, Pink Floyd, Blackfield
and other progressive stuff: Dream Theater, Dead Soul Tribe, Psychotic Waltz, Watch Tower (but things like \"Spastic Ink\" is too annoying for me alltough the instrumental work is simply stunning).
I also like some stuff from Journey, Toto and Saga... stuff like these. Classic Rock/ Metal is always welcome.
Well... these are my main influences I guess...
FWIW,

Currently, I've been listening to The Mars Volta's new album, Frances the Mute. Fans of Yes, Zep, Floyd, and concept albums would do well to pick this up. Loaded with Classic Rock guitar, Ambient textures, and Bonham-like drumming. Also, QOTSA, 11, The Groundhogs, Bill Nelson, Killing Joke, and Adrian Belew.
You won't be dissappointed They are opening for System of a Down, and I understand the live show is amazing.
Also, check out Eleven. Newest album is Howling Book, but Avantegardog is 11's \"White Album\". Alain Johannes has been playing bass and some guitar on QOTSA's current tour, as well as his Mrs., Natasha Schneider on keys. Alain is a fantastic guitarist. (started playing at age 4! My favorite band of the past 5 years. http://www.elevenworld.com/
Offspring, Metallica, AC-DC, Bill Monroe, Rick Skaggs, Frank Zappa, Steely Dan, Joe Pass, Herb Ellis, Johnny Smith, Big Bill Boonzy, Johnny Winter, the list goes on and on and on and on.
Second vote for the Mars Volta (I actually prefer their first album 'Deloused in the Comatorium.') Also check out Sparta, the other half of At the Drive In...all really good original stuff.
speaking of nightwish check out \" The pharoah sails to orion\" cant remember what album thats from. \"Dead boys poem\" \"Tenth man down\". There are many more. Lots of good stuff to be gleaned from this outstanding band. very listenable very melodic!
Should have put this on the same post above but anyways some of my favorites are as follows ...Kansas, Midnight Oil,Pink Floyd (Waters era),The Byrds,REM,Moody Blues,GNR,Blue Oyster Cult,Chevelle, Queensryche(Empire),Alice In Chains,Boston,RHCP, and Irish folk music. just to name few.
If I had to pick just one guitarist, it would have to be Alex Lifeson. One style? Hmm…Probably the mid to late 80’s “hair” bands.
And to you Koori, a great band out of Japan was/is called Loudness. “Soldier of Fortune” was a great, great jam. Not sure if they are still together now.
There are a lot of things I listen to, and some things I absolutley refuse to listen to. Of course my twelve year old daughter tries to \"enlighten\" me, and I try for her sake, but alas some of the newer bands leave me out in the cold.
For jazz I like Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Stanley Jordon, Les Paul trio, there are others who I can't recall their names now.
I could listen to Chet everyday.
All the Southern Rock bands blow me away. Dickie Betts, to me, is awesome. All the bluesheads, living and dead.
Brahms symphony #1 in E minor, everyone should have this.
Bob Wills, Asleep at the Wheel, most Texas swing music.
