Im a long time observer of the old board. Just never really posted anything. To me, i dont care what style of music it is....im just a sucker for a good/great melody. Its even better if i can figure out how to play it. I'd rather listen to 60's/70's music and thro in a little of the 80's stuff. My taste in music is as wide as the grand canyon. The type of music i enjoy playing too is different than my listening tastes...its a little more narrow. Listening wise ill list the standards (acdc, Hendrix, Priest, Skynyrd, Kiss (alive 1 era), CCR, clapton, beatles) just to name a few. However, i really dug some of the \"college\" /Euro electro stuff too (Mighty Lemon Drops, Eco and the Bunnymen, Dead Milkmen, Figures on a Beach, James, Violent Femmes etc.....some Alarm stuff. I really havent been able to embrace the new stuff on the radio much...I think the music industry is so ripe for a \"new\" genre....and has been for many years. I think its the 80's metal scene all over again. Not as much for the type of music, but for the \"staleness\" of it. The 80's metal scene for what its worth got so corporate/stale, no wonder Nirvana killed it. Well, actually Nirvana made us forget the 80's hair days, but it even b4 nirvana, it was Faith No More....what a breath of fresh air they were. Say what you want about the 80's...it was fun and it/they didnt take themselves too seriously.
Today's music IMHO \"lacks\" something. Maybe i just need to be \"wowed\" when i go to a concert. I dont like bands that just stand there and sound like they do on the radio.
Just my .02........maybe im just getting old
I've tried playing their stuff, a good amount of their rythme is difficult...and their solos.... pshh forget it. But I always thought alexi had a very unique sound. I was hoping to see guitar3456 to create a patch for him in the future.
I am an old guy, 50. So my tastes are all over the place. But I am with the others in crap music....YUCK! Lots of classic rock, new age, jazz, and classical.
Try some Segovia in classical. Craig Chaquico (lead for starship), Peter White Jazz, Clapton, Page, Satraini, kinda of a long list as it depends on my mood. Listing Silent Lucidity as I type this.
I'm a Prog Guy...look at my avatar and guess who I prefer..
Dream Theater are just simply the best musicians and have articulate chemistry that is pure magic. Unbelievable to see them live play note for note, beat for beat, time after time. I prefer the Kevin Moore era. Seems that Jordan Rudess is making them more like LTE with vocals. KEvin..come home!! JR is great..he just has one main sound he uses and it's sometimes annoying, like a cranked Doors KB solo...uhhhffff!! I think Kevin was more of a background guy, and blended better.. JMO
RUSH- amazing what 3 guys can do..studio and live..definitely up there
Other fav's Floyd, Queensryche, Triumph, Skid Row, Blue Murder ( sykes ruled on guitar), Gary Moore, Yes, Marillion, Boston, SRV, ZEP, VH, Pantera, Soundgarden, AIC, Disturbed, and for basic simple kick butt rock..ACDC.
Hey guitar3456, is there a Dream Theater album you recommend as essential listening?
When they first came out they released the single \"Pull Me Under\" and I hated it, so I kinda wrote them off. I recently picked up Petrucci's solo album and it blows me away! Now I realize I was probably too hasty (and shallow) in my earlier judgement, and I want to give them another listen. I'd sure appreciate any suggestions to point me in the right direction.
By the way...Satch, Vai, Petrucci-is there something in the water on Long Island or what?
yeah indeed he did.......
still he looked kinda geek in front of them.. u know with the sporty looks and the sunglasses... 8)
still ,great feelings in the way he successes notes!
Images and Words has some really cool stuff.. Metropolis is amazing....Train of thought is cool. Scenes from a Memory is the theme of Operation Mindcrime ( has a story line). I still like Images best. Pull me Under was their means of getting MTV. If you want a real challenge, try playing the solo's on that album. I love seeing guitar tab sites that have the chords and then for the solo's they usually write \" you figure it out\"!!
Cool thing was my wife went out of her way to get me a JPM1 model Ibanez for a Xmas pres.. ( looks like the one in the avatar). I really freaked when I saw it was signed by the man!!
Satch, Vai, Petrucci...aren't they all Italian descent? Long Isl music scene was incredible from the late 80's thru the 90's. Not much lately coming out of there..
I met John a while back and got pics and stuff. They were here with Queensryche. The best was during the encore, having DT play QR tunes , QR doing ( trying DT tunes), and all ten jamming at the end. Degarmo, the new guy, were bowing with the we're not worthy motion when Petrucci was trading solo's with them. I saw him on G3, Yngwie said JP was crap ( another word though) and I laughed..what a joke he is.. JP smoked Vai and Satch. Probably why he's not on anymore. He's not a glam or run around the stage type..but his style, finesse, articulation is some of the best I've ever seen. Unlike Yngwie and Neo Guys, JP doesn't have to play in between delays to make him sound better. Yngwie is cool, but he has such repetetive runs. JP changes up most of the time. Best thing is, he's humble, and not an arrogant rock figure. He still says Steve Morse, and Steve Howe can teach him a few things..Top Notch Player and Personality to boot. At the meet and greet, he didn't shrug people off like most do..ya know, a PIC and BYE..he was really cool with everybody. He'll probably never get inducted into the Rock Hall here, but that's another story.
(BTW, Queensryche, Michael Wilton & the new guy. Degarmo left. And at the time I think the new guys name was Kelly Gray. But he left too. I dont know the \"new\" new guys name.)
Yep, you're right, it was Wilton..Gray was the guy young bald guy with the weird goat! I don't remember who Degarmo's replacement was..might have been Gray. What was funny was some of the guys in the audience there for QR that had no idea what they were going to hear when DT headlined..One kid looked at me and said..who is this? I said watch, listen and learn!! My friend was ticked cause he's a divorcee looking pa nub, and he said..you idiot..this is a sausage fest!! I would say 95% of the audience were musicians.. I ran into so many people I knew from many areas, and from running sound for most of them.. Best show was at Vic Theater in Chicago..They played 4 hours. New stuff, intermission, then they did the entire Master of Puppets album. Then an encore that was 1/2 hr long.. up close and personal there.. another of my wife's gifts to me for our anniv.
I've never seen DT live. The Vic would be awesome though. I've seen shows at the HOB, Aragon, Metro, and Paramount there. Great city. Its where most shows take me. I'm 5+ hours away.
hey g3456....
man as much as i adore jp playin...creativity and all dis stuff... i have todisagree with u bout yngwie...in 2 pts:
1-yngwie created much more music than petrucci...and the fact that yngwie have a band just as an accompagnement to his solos, and petrucci being the lead guitarist of a band that produces songs as a whole band not as an accompagnement makes it, illogical, and unfair to compare both guitarists music....as a matter of fact, yngwie's solos r more creative than we think, still true there r some repetitive licks, but it's just the same as ne other lead guitarist...it's just more flagrant with yingwie's playin b-coz of the knda musik he plays
2-i agree with u that yingwie is a bit arrogant and in terms of personality petrucci is far more modest.... but if u go to yingwie's official website, u'll see in the \"ask yingwie\" section, that he was asked about petrucci....
i quote...(from yngwie's official web)
Question from Johannes Berg: \"I would like to know what Yngwie thinks about John Petrucci from Dream Theater.\"
Anwer from Yngwie: \"I have been asked this same question so many times, so let me summarize. Dream Theater (especially their earlier albums) are one of my favorite bands. John Petrucci is a very melodic player with obvious talent. I think he's quite good.\"
One thing people forget about Yngwie is how long he has been doing it. When you have been playing that long, and have that many albums out, and are largely classical influenced, you are bound to hear repetative licks.
I hear them all the time with Yngwie. And I love him anyway. What I think a lot of folks are feeling with him is he's not \"fresh\". Its the same Yngwie we've been hearing for years.
Cool thing was my wife went out of her way to get me a JPM1 model Ibanez for a Xmas pres.. ( looks like the one in the avatar). I really freaked when I saw it was signed by the man!!
 Wow!
I used to dig Yngwie's first couple of albums, but by the time Trilogy came out there were a zillion other guys doing the shred thing and IMO doing it better. A few weeks ago I rented the G3 video of the tour with Yngwie and I didn't even watch all of Yngwie's set b/c I got so bored with it.
Not trying to dis Yngwie, I have HUGE respect for his chops, but his stuff just doesn't sound \"musical\" to my ears. It sounds like exercises. Just my opinion.
Musical preference is such a personal thing that debating who's better than who is really a moot point, I guess. It's all in the ears of the beholder
Not trying to dis Yngwie, I have HUGE respect for his chops, but his stuff just doesn't sound \"musical\" to my ears. It sounds like exercises. Just my opinion.
man, musical preference is in fact different from talent recognition.....
u may say that u don't like malmsteen bcoz u simply dt like his music...as i would say i dt like the zepplins music (not stairway to heaven witch i love)... that's a mere personal opinion....
but we cannot say he doesn't have feelings in his composition or his not talented person just bcoz we dt like the sound of his music
it's like i'm sayin cannibal corpse r not talented or \"Creative\" as best put in it's meaninig, just b-coz i isten to bach or vis-versa...
I can't believe not a single one of you b@#stards mentioned me. What the hell is up with that? lol
I like post modern eclectic-rock-alternative-folk-rap-metal-techno-pop mostly, but I listen to some of you guys crappy suggestions somtimes too. lol Honestly? I like to use the term alternative rock to just blanket everything I listen to.
Thomas dumped the Nortaren moniker!?! After all we've been through? I haven't been this disappointed since Kenny dumped The Puppet King. lol
I certainly am not dogging Yngwie, he's a master of his class. I was repeating statements he made about other players like JP, VAI. Yngwies arrogance and ego killed his rep with many fans. Many have said, to be so influenced by classical music, he's not as inflential as the classic genious he styles. Even EVH said, classical music is so broad based in every direction, he refused to ever identify his style as such.
Yngwies persona, I think had a lot to do with his own loss of fan appreciation. Example..buy Yngwies REH video. He plays a lick and says \"like that\". Petrucci goes from point to point, with relevance to each step. Yngwies attitude in his vid is like..ha ha you'll never do this..but you bought my vid anyway!! Nonetheless, I would put him and Michalangelo as tops in their game..NEO! JP is Prog, so I agree, it's hard to compare the two. JP is classically trained though. Many of his runs he uses monitors or footrests during extreme passages.
As far as Yngwie goes, when you play so many frikkin' notes, you're bound to repeat yourself somewhere!
I bought Dream Theater Live at Budokan because I've heard so much about them. As musicians, they are absolutely incredible. As songwriters, I don't find them listenable. That dvd is incredible to watch though. Then again, I like Rush a lot and there's many here who can't get into them at all.
I prefer to listen to Dave Gilmour, Brian May, Hendrix, or SRV as guitarists instead of the speed demons. They're much more musical and expressive in my opinion. It's still fun to listen to what Petrucci, Malmsteen, Alexi Lahos, etc. can do, but it's not what I would pop into my car stereo.
Thanks to those who suggested Nightwish \"Nemo.\" That's a cool song.
This, like guitar choice, amps, or strings etc, is way too open. The cool thing is just like guitars, strings and other preferences, they all have their place and most are open as musicians to give proper regards and respects. Taste is always subjective or objective..musicality is what it is. many of my 80's clan cringed when they heard me playing Nirvana and Pearl Jam songs..Music always evolves. Being open as musicians to all musical styles gives one more appreciation for the instrument itself, no matter who plays it. Many disliked Metallica, or Linkin Park..but give credit where it's due...LP's diversity opened a huge market that was as diverse as their music. Smart! Remember when Aerosmith took a beating on the RUN DMC version of WTW?? That introduced a whole new market, and more listeners..again..Smart! ( or is it careful exploitation?) Either way..it's a musical creation......
Agreed. There's a lot of music that I don't like, but sells like crazy. I can appreciate all types and listen to a wide variety although I fail to see Britney Spears contribution other than her being very doable.
What other Nightwish do you recommend?
I've been listening to Lacuna Coil too, but aren't really familiar with them too much. Swamped is a pretty awesome song.
my personal favs of nightwish:
1. End of all Hope (album: Century Child, overall great record!)
2. Wishmaster and Wanderlust (album: Wishmaster)
3. Ghost Lovescore (album: Once)
Also check out Ayreon. And a bit more into the gothic stuff, check out dutch bands AfterForever (I once had a diner and visited an opera with the songwriter/guitar player of that band) and Epica. I also have Nightwish and Laguna Coil performing \"A ghost between us\" together.
Hey thanks! Someone recommended The Gathering too. Some of my new songs started going in this direction, which is why I'm curious. I didn't want to sound like someone else even though I enjoy this music.

Seen em 4x live. Awesome!
Priest was the band that introduced me to metal. I was throwing the horns to British Steel in 3rd grade.
\\m/  \\m/
