What a great thread! An unreliable penny whistle player  :?
Still with that guys attitude towards your gigs, I would've been shoving that whistle up his clacker and tell him to play a ditty like that - would give a new definition to mellow! But I guess we all have stories about unreliable band members.....
Yep the economic downturn as they call it sucks but we're not really feeling it here in oz quite so bad as you guys over there. However, my advice is to use this time to diversify your skills and knowledge so you have more options if economics get harsh again in future. Just a thought for you. Either way, I hope things pick up for you and little Shreddles who's down on his luck also. I thought he would be kinda over Shania by now though - its been a while!
Yep we're all watching our pennies. I'm takin unemployment for the first time in 30 years for four weeks until the theatre season starts up in September. Although I did get to go play at my nieces wedding today with my brother-inlaws band and it was great. It was especialy great because she didn't know before hand I had been invited to play so it was an extra gift for her day.
I use a Vocalist live 2. would NOT gig without it ...at least not as well.
But be careful not to over use it. I did that when i first got it at practices. Thats very easy to do...useing it all the time it starts to sound like you are playing to backing tracks. I personally hate the shows where a guys sits in front of recorded backing tracks cueing his part. Maybe thats just me. :? A good sign you are useing it too much is when people start asking questions after the set...whats that sound i hear blah blah etc..
I use the Live 2 version on purpose ..cause freekin 5 part harmonies with Queen singing 4 part backup does not make for a very realistic live preformance when there are on 2 or 3 guys onstage and only one person has a mike
I use 1 harmonie usually and mix it around 11:30 in the mix...then no one notices exept to say great full sounding 3 piece...Its our secret weapon
Our wendsday night is closing down too....I feel your pain about the club scene...I setup and teardown more than the other guys who show up about an hr before we play...you can do that with me if you dont ever F%$# up your part... like my new drummer he shows up and rewls...the previous drummer didnt show up for practise or setup either but he kept missing cues and forgetting songs... :x then you gotta go...
BUT...if you need practise in between gigs to learn new stuff and remember all your chord changes like I do, then you have to show up for practise and help out. Its all good if your not perfect but honestly giving it your full effort.
...if you dont and then mess up my show and make me look amature  your outta here ...thats kinda \"James Brown cruel\"...but you have to put as much effort into the show as I do OR dont make mistakes ...they get to choose. ...i aint giving you equal pay or play for just walking in like its \"night at the improv\" and then takin my hard earned cash.
 I KNEW IT!!!
Our stimulus package has been going to Australia. :x
And this is what your money is being used to develop:
Thanks for that Tou - we appreciate it!!
Now thats what I call a stimulus package!!
Money well spent---but don't ya hate it when your ex-wives get together?
I have a VL4 and a VL Pro. VL's don't kill vocals, people who misuse them do! I guess it's easy to get carried away but wet (too much effect, not enough original vocal), overloaded (too many harmony voices), and misdirected (adding harmonies below an already low voice, etc.) are the things that I had to fight with one of our singers. Almost any guitar player will tell you that a harmonizer sounds sweet up to the point that it starts wiping out the original (triggering) note. It's the sizzle, not the steak.
I also have a classic recording of a solo on \"Knocking On Heaven's Door,\" using a Fender Strat, PU selector in position 2, POD-XTL (with an AC-30TB patch [DigiTech BritClean]), some phasing and delay, all being fed into an Atomic R112-50. Just laid back and clean and sweet----I love taking a solo on this song. I add all of these details to emphasize that none of it mattered, once an overset VL4 picked up my guitar cab from a mic pointing at my amp and left on. When the VL4 gets done with the signal, it sounds like a phaser war or a drunken cat* on the synth keys at an ELP soundcheck for the Tarkus set.

Imagine what it was doing to his vocals.
