GNX4 vs GNX3000

Hi all,

Been gone a long time since I've been on here (a good few years), but I've kept up with the GNX3000. Lovely device, takes a lot of playing with (cos there is so much to play with!) to make good sounds, but it's great for the kind of prog and metal sounds I want.

I know it's long since discontinued, and possibly obsolete, but I recently remembered the GNX4. I couldn't afford it at the time, but time and the second-hand market have done their work. It's got a few more features over the 3k, such as greater autonomy with its onboard recorder, and I believe the footswitches can be programmed in stompbox mode?

On paper it does look like a superior device, but there is one glaring issue with the 3k, and that's the switchover time for patches in Patch mode - obviously an instant of silence is unacceptable when playing live. Does the 4 suffer the same issue? I remember reading a post years ago that mentioned a comparison but I can't find it.

Otherwise, has anyone switched from the 3K to the 4, and if so what are your impressions, better or showing up different issues?

Cheers,
Rob

  • I'm not really qualifiied to say - I've never used a 3K. But I've compared them closely and I'd NEVER give up my GNX4 for even three 3K's...

Funny, I feel the same way about my GNX3 :) IMHO they never shoulda taken away the S/PDIF... OTOH replacing smartmedia was a good idea

I haven't kept up with all the firmware updates, but I believe it's still pretty accurate.

    Great link, thanks.

I have firmware version 1.3 on my GNX4, is that the latest?
  • hi guys,
i own both and i have to say the sounds of gnx3k are way much better than gnx4..
infact i tryed to export the sound of gnx3k into the gnx4 but i couldnt cos te gnx4 have different dna sounds..
i will sell my gnx4 and buy a backu gnx3k for my gigs..
  • one of the major differences has been latency is higher in Preset Mode on the 3K. If you use Stompbox mode, not a big deal. 3K also does not have the Control Assign functions GNX4 does.

This was one of my biggest disappointments when GNX3000 first came out. I think they removed this feature because it's a little complex to set up and causes a lot of \"bugs\" when programming presets - things turning on/off when you don't expect them to. You just have to be more careful programming, and check all the preset assigns.

I've switched back to GNX4 about two years ago, after having using GNX3000 for many years prior, and I haven't regretted it. But I keep the 3000 ready to go as a backup at all times.
  • Yeah, the complexity of assigns was a major reason it wasn't used in the 3K. Remember the 2000 that was announced and never released? IIRC it was supposed to have had 2 CA options. When pics came out they were not shown to be visible on the pedal. I always wondered what happened.

I was quite surprised by the numbers of users that complained about CA options. They were a little tricky to understand by the manual, but most on this board knew how to use them. One of the busier sections at my site was on control assigns and live usage which incorporated CA and SB mode.
