Pwr supply chord broke and I'm bummed/pissed

Had my power supply chord plugged into a ceiling outlet last night in our studio during rehearsal. One of the band members lost his footing stepping over my pedalboard and pulled on the chord to catch his balance. Now its toast. We have a gig this fri and Sat at one of our better clubs and I'm not feeling good about it. One of the band members works at GC and is looking into a replacement, but I know GC does not carry them and they are special order as I have thought about getting a back-up before but never followed-up and ordered one. Now here I am in the very situation I had forseen, but didn't do anything about it. %$#%$$# it!

Just venting.......no reply requested. #$%$#@$%-IT!

  • 2 Thoughts.

Don't know/or of anybody with a gnx that would let use their ps for the gig?

Pay the extra for next/2 day delivery?
  • That bites.
As a last resort, so you don't haveta give up your gig (or play GNX-less) - find another p/s to use temporarily, same voltage/current, yada...\"observe polarity\" (although I'm pretty sure the GNX uses an AC p/s)
  • Yup, 120VAC, 2.1 amps (at least). My main concern would be getting a tip that actually fits in the GNX.
  • How is the power supply toast. What broke. It might be fixable.

Mine died and what happened the cable basically had a short in it, right at the base of the transformer. I took a dremel, cut the casing inhalf all the way around it (just follow the seems), popped the two halves apart and repair and soldered the wiring back into place and taped it up to protect the repaired wiring. Then I tapped the casing back together with electrical tape like a madman. It has worked fine for me ever sense. I don't leave it plugged in anymore when not in use, just in case. It took me all of about 30 mins to do it.

You might give that a try. It may not be that bad of a fix.
  • I've heard of lots of guys fixing their p/s's from a broken/shorted cord at the place it enters the casing. Search, and ye shall find.
If only that worked on women. :?
  • Thanks for the love guys. Please don't take this thread too seriously, I am just frustrated. I am not going to play live with a power supply chord that has been sliced and diced and duct taped. Need a brand new one and a brand new back-up. Just call me paranoid...whatever.

Thanks for the replys though...I love this forum for all of its info and for the opportunity to vent as a musician from time to time. It is now Tuesday and I am still f---ing pissed. I was at GC today (I live in LA for christ's sake) and the GC weenies ( yes there was more than one) looked at me like I was from Mars. No they don't have one and apparently they don't know how to get one before Friday. What kind of support is that in the second largest city in the f*&^%ing universe?

Mine went bad about 6 months ago and has been fine since I repaired it. I play out with it every week and use it practically everyday. If your stressing it might be an easy fix.
  • Rule of thumb for any gigging musician.

Have a backup for EVERYTHING. Chords, guitars., power supplies, amps, effects, etc....because eventually everything gets used, and you won' t get caught off guard.
  • OK...this is wrong thats the disclaimer I have  ...BUT

 you could go down to GC get a new GNX and use the cord for the gig ...theres a 30 day return policy so just take it back when your new one arrives it shouldnt take more than 2 weeks. and less if you pay to overnight.  I know, I know tacky but might save your booty here.
  • Totally OT, But.....

ODB! Your avatar is really disturbing.. LoL
I might be able to handle the muffin top girating around like that, if there was a set of 44DD's to go along with it! LoL :P :lol:

I love it. I actually saw that episode of SNL and the gag never gets old. My ex-g/f has a \"more cowbell\" sticker on her bass case.
    But I agree w/Rawb. 44D's in the picture wouldn't hurt.... 8)
  • Hey Hey Heeeeyyyyyyy. This thread was supposed to be about ME not ODB's Avatar!

That what that is, a snl spoof?!! LoL Beats me! I could count on one hand how many times i've tried to watch that program, since the seventies.
LoL oh well ..... LoL keeping pinions to myself .... LoL
  • Well did you order new ones? What did you do for the gig?

    Hello!
  • Played the gig fine with a backup I ordered overnite delivery from Dean at digitech. I broke open the old one and soldered the broken wire and taped it back up. Ordered another one which came it today, now I have three, the one I ordered first, the one that came in today as a backup and the one I fixed. LOLLLL, I know, I'm anal about stuff like that. Now I have three power supply chords. Now what if the pedal board itself goes south?  Oh man, here I go again.
  • If your cord is broken, and not the power supply itself, I'd splice it/crimp it, whatever, and then tape it up with electrical tape for the gig. Repairing broken cords can't stop the gig, that's part of life on the stage. Order a new PS if you want for later, but hit the gig with a battle scared PS and rock out anyway.

I'd like to say that I have backups for everything for our gigs, but we don't. We just don't have the money. If our PA went out, we're jacking the vocal mics into the guitar amps and going old school. Pedal breaks, hope that the guitar amp with it's two channels sounds good enough to get through the night. If the van breaks down, I'm calling AAA..... Besides, when things go bad, you write a song about it and laugh later. Tape the cord and hit the show.

Nevermind, I see you just posted what you did for the gig. Glad it worked out for you. Maybe you can pick up a used GNX4 w/o a PS at a good price.
  • You know, I have thought often about doing that, I mean getting a used GNX4 and having it as a back-up. I use about 25 patches (many from guitar3456's awesome disc) and all I would have to do is do the same with the back-up. I'm kinda hanging around and seeing if something new comes up that is the next generation of the gnx4 and get that instead. And then I will have my old one (along with the 3 power supply cords lollll) as a back-up. Anybody hear of anything out there? :)
  • I keep hoping that Digitech will announce plans for a GNX5, but sadly it seems that they have no interest in keeping the GNX concept alive. My plan was to get the \"new and improved\" GNX5 and keep the GNX4 as a backup. But now it looks like one is better off to try and buy a good used GNX4 instead if you really need a backup. It doesn't sound like there are any plans at all for a GNX5 model. Too bad. IMHO, the GNX concept was the best thing that was available to users. But I suppose they can make lots more money buy selling individual pedals, recorders, drum machines, loopers, jam along players, midi interfaces, etc....
  • It has been confirmed that they have no plans to continue the GNX series.
  • The GNX series was so cool. The best songwriting tool all in one package ever. I remember when I got my GNX2, it was so kewl I had to take it right back to GC and get the GNX3 that had just come out.
Drums, guitars and a recorder /looper at your feet with computer recording software
that was a big deal for me and really got me back into music again after I had taken about 5 years off. Fond mamories  of my GNXes...\"fairwell my friend I new ye well\":(

That's a bummer! Were to go from here? As great as the GNX4 is there can always be improvements etc.. I was hoping to upgrade someday to something even better, say before my gnx4 dies or something. I mean hey already have had to do surgery on the power supply line cord. Not to long ago I had everything in my gig bag ready to head out the door to Church Bam right on the floor the GNX4 went. I did not have the bag zipped up doh! Anyhow everything has been working I'm just hoping it keeps working at this point. I realy don't know that I would wan't to buy anothere gnx4? being dated & all I would be hoping to move on to even better features,Tones etc.. In a new tool to use & learn master 8) :D now that is deffinetly harsh news! IF SOMETHING does happen to my GNX4 i suppose at this point i would just have to get another New one? Maybee a used in excellent condition?
  • We've known this since before the new RPs came out - I thought I told you guys?

You did. But we just don't want to give up hope.

Well I suppose you did Iliace. I just thought it was the kind of unofficial. Now it seems like what your saying is official. I to was hoping they would repent of there wayword ways
  • I was on the phone with the multi-fx market manager one day, that's what he told me. So they've known since October 2007. He was also the one that told me they'd be pulling the GuitarOne/Guitar World ads with presets, earlier that summer.

    I was disappointed too.

You did. But we just don't want to give up hope.

So back to collecting pedals? LoL

Any thoughts that maybe the Rp's will eventually morph into a workstation?
  • They might. GNX4 was quite successful, at least it seemed that way - and the old RPs (100, 200, etc) came out before the workstations did. They may be following the same development path.
  • I think the rp 500s and 1000's look really kool...but not the swiss army knife all in one that the gnx series was. they are an \"on board recorder- drum machine- memory card away from bieng a GNX. :(
