  • Warped Tour continues to bring the best in emerging and niche bands to public. The tour was in Selma, TX at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater Saturday, July 5. Bands appeared on 8 stages, with 4 stages being active at any one time. The Verizon main stage, gets split into two smaller stages, but, interestingly enough, does not serve as the stage for the hotter bands. Those appear on two temporary stages set up in the asphalt area where the Ozzfest second stage usually is found.

It seems impossible to get set times for bands before the day of the show. Why that is, who knows? The show was advertised as “Gates open 11:00, show starts at 12:00.” But, for some idiotic reason, one of the bigger bands, Story of the Year, had their set at 11:30, so we missed them.

My son and I saw all or part of the following band’s shows: Bedouin Soundclash; The Higher; Oreskaband; Reel Big Fish; Animo; August Burns Red; The Briggs; Paramore; Cobra Starship; MC Chris; Protest the Hero; The Aggrolites; and From First to Last.

I went to the show planning to see Reel Big Fish. Their set was great. Near the end of the day, just before Cobra Starship, we stopped by the Reel Big Fish booth, and ran into the lead singer, who signed our copy of their album. That was very cool, as we got there when there was no big signing line.

My son wanted to see The Higher. We got down front for their show. They were excellent.

Paramore seemed to draw the biggest crowd. They seem to attract the 13-16 year old girls, probably because of their female lead singer. The play a decent enough show. I am told they have a song on the Rock Band game, which might account for some of their apparent popularity.

The low point of the day was August Burns Red. This band has no redeeming value. They look like 5 school boys trying to be bad boy metal dudes, and they suck at it. Really, with two guitars, it’s ok to play a lead sometime; it’s ok to change a tempo. Chimpanzees would play better music.

The highlight, for me, was Protest the Hero. I think I have a new favorite metal band. These guys were on the very small Ernie Ball Stage. The talent level of these five guys is through the roof. Take the best parts of Cradle of Filth, Iron Maiden and Journey and you might get a sound like theirs. They were simply amazing. If Dragonforce could learn how to play live, they might be half as good as these guys.

We heard two good punk bands, but only caught parts of their shows. These definitely are worthy of further examination – The Briggs, and Animo.

Next up – Mayhem on July 26.
  • NIN on Friday... I've got my plain black tee shirt all ironed and ready...
