ATTN 'TAUS - and all other gigging guyz
Hi all...here's the drill. There's a good chance I'll be joining two women (including the one with the angelic voice I can't get into my studio...) for a little wedding gig this spring.
These two girls are really into the country-ish thing, so they do a lot of sad break-up songs, which obviously aren't suitable for a wedding.
So...I'm looking for ideas to build a song list. I'd love to get advice and suggestions from youse guyz who've actually played weddings and other paying gigs (you payin' attention, 'taus and Mike?), but I'm open to any and all suggestions as to what songs would be good to play at a wedding.
I don't know how big the crowd will be or even whether we'll be \"background\" music or if there'll be lots of dancing. It'll likely be outdoors. I do know it'll be a \"western\" crowd, who typically enjoys western/country/bluegrass-type stuff, although an appropriate rockin' or upbeat element could be useful.
We'll be: a singer with stellar vocals and servicable git'r playing; a bassist with modest playing and backing vox ability; and me (who's useless, but I do have a GNX & a pretty git'r...
). Actually, I'll have both my Dean ac/el and my Ibanez elec with me, and I can sing some in a pinch .
I could always use my GNX for rythm/drumbeat, or I also have a ZOOM drum machine that I could set up with drum patterns for our set list. I'm too stupid to make MIDI files to put into my GNX, and my ProTracksPlus CD is doing stellar double duty as a coffee coaster/dog-attention-getter
.
Of course, there's always the option of making backing trax on my GNX for our set list, using drums and whatever instruments we won't/can't play during the show.
Post or PM me your ideas!!! 8)

But when you wake up next Tuesday, the nurse can ask you if you remember the license plate of that bus....
(...\"that boy's got a one track mind\"!...)
The menu is definitely skewed towards western/country music, largely acoustic. I'll have my electric along for certain songs, but clearly it's going to be a very country-western hoedown s**tkickin' kinda set. And with the front singer being the aforementioned angel-voiced beauty I've talked/drooled about, we'll be doing lots of chick songs - Martina McBride, Patty Griffin, Shania, EmmyLou, etc, along with a bunch of her originals.
Should be fun, though very different from what I'm used to playing. Oh well...whatever it takes to hear this girl sing. She's AWEsome. Hott, too...
Maybe you have already thought of this. What can be a ton of fun is set up
some songs for line dance. Works good for mixed ages.
when doing stuff like weddings, its safe to have 1 set of \"oldies but goodies\" and another set of updatew and current hits.Look at the billboard chart this year for country western and pic a dozen \"can't fail\" hits and just nail them
the best part about doing country is that there are very little effects, the sound is clean and straight forward, and the phenominal arrangements are already done 8)
.....and if you think the crowd is falling asleep
The thing is, I'm not getting a ton of input on the setlist. The chick who's the alpha-babe of the group - and by FAR the most talented - has a very country-music bent, as does the girl who's getting married. So that's going to be the flavor of the playlist. And we focus on the chick singer/s 'cuz our best singer is the above-mentioned babe. The bassist can sing a song or two, and I'm going to sing a few \"male-voice\" songs  and a couple of duets with the angel-voice (e.g. \"Picture\", \"Summer Nights\"). But overall, it's mostly looking like Shania, Martina, EmmyLou-type songs. A few Gwen Stefani/No Doubt, and even a Madonna song.
We do have a decent mix of old/er n new/er stuff, so hopefully no one'll get bored. We just wanna pull of a smooth show and not embarrass ourselves or the bride (friend of the bass player).
I'm not worried about the guys - if the chix are dancing, they'll be in on it, even if we were playing the bunny-hop.
We're not doing any stupid wedding songs - Macarana, HokyPoky, et al - as the bride has requested we not get cheezy and stupid, even for the sake of the grandmas.
I'd love to mix in a bit of fun/dancy stuff, and even a rock-ish tune, but that seems to be unpopular with both our singer-babe and the client (bride). The crowd we'll be amusing is very Western and into the country stuff, and she says they'll dance to that. We'll also be playing with no drummer, although we might whip up some drum trax on either my GNX or my ZOOM drum machine.
I have managed to talk them into a couple of fun-type rock-ish songs: \"Keep Your Hands To Yourself\" by Ga. Satellites, \"She F**king Hates Me\" by the Mudd Puddles (or whatever their name is... ), stuff like that.
I was so stoked about the \"gig\" myself and four other co-workers were going to do last April, and then the whole thing fell through one or two days before the date. That was a big disappointment but we recovered. I still get together with a couple of them and act like we are playing in front of the world.
Of course I still get a thrill playing with Fabulous Freeman Heights Praise Team, every Sunday morning.
Anyway I'm rambling again, sorry, knock 'em dead. The third fret is \"G\".
peace
Meanwhile, I'm having fun \"playing\" with the chix...one of which is so gorgeous it hurts your eyes to look at her. Naturally, she's nuts, and a recovered alcoholic... . But she sings like an angel and can even write music. She n I are working on lyrics for \"Cost Of Silence\", which I recorded and posted w/o vocals, 'cuz the ones I wrote were so pitifully bad.
I actually had a spat with her over where F# is. She plays a G# and sez \"that's F#, right?\". I sez, \"no, F# is here (2nd fret). She actually argued it with me, was convinced I was wrong, and called me a \"music nerd\". Like I said...nuts.
