GNX4 PSU anomally...

Just procured another GNX4 (eBay). It's in great condition and I got it for ~$160.

It came with the original Harman PSU (9v AC, 2.1A) and seems to be fine. However, I decided to then plug my original GNX4 in to the same PSU and all kinds of audio breakup happened. I lost my other Harman a long time ago and so have been using an alternative PSU and everything is fine.

Starting to wonder if the Harman PSU that just arrived is starting to develop the problem that has been discussed here many times and that it's an intermittent thing. Could be the real reason why this guy let this GNX4 go.

Feels good having two GNX4s because I still prefer this to anything on the market today. Might just pick up another one if the price is right :-)

I would definitely prefer a couple of GNX4s running supermodels when gigging as opposed to a single Axe FX because anything can fail!

Cheers!

  • I also have procured a second mint-condition GNX4 as a backup; while my original one is in great shape and I treat it very well, I love the GNX so much I don't ever want to be without one until something better comes along, which don't seem likely!
  • I have a GNX4 with 2 spare power supplies (all Harman), and I carry a GNX3000 for backup. Maybe I should get another for backup, before they start disappearing. But I agree, nothing on the market today appeals to me as an upgrade possibility. To be fair, I haven't tried AxeFX, but the price is kinda steep on that, so I have to consider a million other options in that price range before I make that move.

I now have three absolutely mint-condition units and it took all my willpower to not bid on another tonight that went for $160.

The mere fact that Mike's models get so darned close to the Twin Reverb and the AC30 is justification right there....now look at the bonus that we get!

Clearly, this was purely a business decision by Harman to discontinue this fantastic product. I mean look at the cost of a Whammy or looper alone!

Did I read that you use a FCB1010 with your GNX4? I want to use an external MIDI controller with mine so I can keep the unit off the floor.

Another tip: Ebay has used Panasonic Tough Books for like $150. I got the CF18 model. Built like a tank, touch screen that swivels and folds to make like a tablet. Mine still gets 5+ hours on the battery and came with a fresh install of Windows XP...tons of ports, all protected. Load up XEdit (and PTP) and this thing will take any stage punishment (if you even need an editing device on stage). Now, contrast this to the Mickey Mouse, 1980's-style LCD of the AXE FX II....It's a no-brainer for me! The black and silver of the Toughbook even matches the GNX :-)

    So, I have 3 GNX4's and a Toughbook for < $1000

    Cheers
  • Latest jibber jabber is about this unit called the Epsi. It's a convolution unit capable of very long impulse responses. I haven't tried one yet but I know several guys who have used them on Zoom G9.2tt, POD and GNX4/GNX3000 and said it really gives a more defined room sound with the cab IR selected.

One guy said he connected the Epsi to the 1/4\" out L mono and ran his direct sounds XLR with Spk Cmp On while having the Epsi output drive his Power Engine cab loaded with Eminence Beta 12LTA (somewhat full range 12\" spk)

Company is called Logidy. google it. Many cool video demos.
