Found equipment in trash pile

Have any of you found any cool music gear.

Driving home I saw a pile of boxes outside a house for the trash and I saw the name Tascam.

I stopped and got a free Tascam CD-RW 5000 in perfect condition with the manual taped to the top. The only part it didn't have was the remote control.

It will work great for live stereo recordings and seems to have better a/d converters than my PCs CD writer.

Have you ever found anything cool? I have a Peavy bass head i also found in then trash.

Do you know where I can get the remote control?

  • I've never found anything, but I threw away a nice Crate 1x12 combo one time...
  • Was it a Crate Tube amp? I would have loved to find one of those.
  • I have never found anything good from the trash. My sister and brother-in-law lived in Las Vegas for a few years. They used to find all kinds of good stuff left on the front yards as people would pack up and move away in the middle of the night. My brother-in-law once snagged a nice home stereo amp (a missing knob or two, but no big deal) in a pile of garbage. When I first got my GNX4, I jacked my GNX4 into that stereo amp and used it as a mini PA system. Worked really good for a long time until I finally had saved enough money to buy a proper PA.

No, it wasn't a tube, solid state ;) I would have given a nicer one more effort. The problem was that the way the handle at the top was attached wasn't secure, and the bolts under the top panel would fall out every now and again, and the handle would come off. Most times when that happened, the bolts would then short something or other inside and the fuse would blow. Any replacement fuse would immediately blow again.

I spent $80 to repair it twice (Crate would not cover this under warranty), and the second time they actually put in a different handle fixture. But I kept having problems with it, so one day I was just fed up and left it on the curbside ....
  • I had a friend a while back that would NEVER hang out on \"garbage night\". He would drive around neighborhoods looking for things to salvage. Almost weekly he would grab some thrown out electrical equipment. He would then spend a few bucks on parts, fix them and sell them.

Pretty regularly, he would get an amp (usually cheap ones), but a couple of times he found some really nice stuff, including a 12 string Gibson and a Marshall head.
  • Illace. I had a Crate Tube amp from the early 90s.

It sounded good but it also fell apart.

I should have spent more for better quality.

Ednrg. Wow a Gibson and a Marshall head! I wish I could find those.

    His persistence paid off.
  • I have a friend that volunteer's at Good Will. On occasion he has found some real beauts!

    Gemini II amp
    Champ in mint condition
    Vibroluxe
    Bandmaster head
    50 cal
Silvertone and Wards Airline tube amps
    Ampeg flip bass amp
Peavey Renown, Pacer, and Bandit amps.
A really old Marshall PA head.

Quite a few other unknown SS amps like Marlboro, Captain, and Luxe that used to be top selling practice amps for students here.

    EHMM DElx
    TS808
    Old Stereo Ibanez chorus pedal
    Orig Rat
    orig 70's ADA flanger (mint)

A host of cables. An old Casio Midi Strat, drums, and a bunch of old PA gear. Currently I'm restoring an old Soundcraft 16 ch mixer. The knobs for each channel are about an inch in diameter. This board is about the size of most 32-48 ch sanctuary consoles made today. These old boards were amazing in sound because every single channel was discrete analog components.
  • I have bought a bunch of things for next to nothing at goodwill.
    Techniques turntable sl series

Many high end cassette decks A Nakamichi ,# Sony, Teac and an old Pro Kenwood that needs a belt.

I still make live stereo recordings on high end cassette decks.
Though I may just use my new found Tascam CD recorder.

YES, YES! I am always trying to find those great old mixers for cheap. They are always at collector prices when I find them.

With everything digital it is nice to put some high quality analog in the signal path.
  • I found a perfectly good stereo QSC power amp in a dumpster, I use it in my backup rig.
  • Walking through a co workers garage I see tubes and tweed. I ask \"whatcha got there?\" \"oh some old amp, you want it?

It was a Peavey Vintage 110W 6x10. 3 speakers are bad but inside looks good.

    This is the 4x10

  • I love the Peavy. Those are generally based on late 50s early 60s Fender amps...so they are great.

I would love to get a free tube amp. Even if it needs work.

Wonderful Amp...I got the 6 10\" version I purchased new in 1973, 4 6l6's 120 watt screamer. Mines beat all to hell. (Too many bars, too much beer spilled on it, too many cigarette burns, but there aint nothing that sounds like it in the world...Great find.

You just described the amp to a T. Spills, stains, burns. Too funny.
  • Tal- seems that amp has some real mojo and battle scars!
