How to find \"Power Chords\"

All power chords are 5ths e.g. A5 E5 G5 etc. So if you wanted a G5 power chord the keynote would be \"G\" and the 5th (D) You can use barre chords then only have to finger the 5th of the scale.

  • Your chart should also include the optional octave, which is also a 5th chord.
  • Whilst your info is correct, I have not included it here as I was thinking more of the newbie as any experienced player would know the info anyway...I played over 45 years as a pro including Wembley arena.

Its nobody else's place to tell \"me\" what \"I\" should post.

  • lighten up phil, we're all just trying to help each other out. You may not have taken it that way but Ed was just offering a suggestion. I may never have played at wembley, but I do almost always play root-5-octave for power chords...

  • My point was that it should have been clear that the post was with newbie's in mind...so if you start adding more complex stuff (From their point of view) it is counter productive. I was then saying I have a great deal of experience in this field having taught for many years. I am 69 and have been playing since I was 15. If I came over negative that was not the purpose...(Sadly I suffer from chronic Bi-polar disorder that i have battled with since a lad of 19 it is a Negative illness...(that's life)

  • So now that you found it, what do you do with it?
  • Sorry I dont understand the question if addressed to me.?

  • I see those power chords all the time in rock. 1st and 5th. Not much else to them. Jazz and classical tend to avoid the 5th voiciings even when all 4 notes of a 7th chord are used, mainly because, quite frankly, they're not just that melodic.

I think a better use of your practice time would be some time with drop 2 voicings on the 4 different string sets. Minor 7th chord would start out with root in the bass, then 3rd, then 5th, then 7th, proceeding up the fretboard.

Here's an abbreviated example below to get you going.

When you can play the inversions up and down the neck in all 12 keys and in all 4 string sets, then its time to put them into progressions, 2,5,1...1,6,2,5.....1,4,5, etcccc...Notice very few of the drop 2 voicings containg the interval of the perfect 5th...

Power chords sound very strange trying to play Autumn Leaves..

On the flipside, Smells Like Teen Spirit would sound quite unusual with major 7th chord voiced in drop 2...
