Midi control preset changes in GNX4

Anyway midi file can send control preset changes to GNX4?
If so, what is the command format in Protracks?
If so, will this work thru USB connection?

Ultimately looking to play a midi file full of commands to preset change the GNX4 at timed sequences and pass thru preset changes to other midi chained devices.

thanks to anyone who can help

  • Yes, you can program midi code into midi tracks to make changes on your GNX4 exactly when you want the change. If you are really interested, Craig Anderton's book, \"The GNX4 Power User's Guide\" has a section on doing stuff like that. IIRC, it's just adding the CC code at the appropriate time in the data stream. I read his examples in the book and was able to do it myself without too much effort. That was almost 4 years ago, now. But you have to know, or be willing to learn midi. If you don't have the book, you might be able to find that info on one his tutorials posted on the Digitech website for free.

Since the GNX4 is hooked up to the computer via USB, you can pass the midi code from PTP (which is what I used at the time) via USB to the GNX4 and out to all your other midi equipment (via the midi out on the GNX4). At the time I was playing around with that stuff, I was using my old Dell laptop running WinXP and PTP. Don't know if things have changed if you are running Vista or Win7. But I know driver issues are always a pain from one OS version to the next.

It's been a long time since I played around with making changes via midi, but the GNX4 and PTP worked exactly like Anderton describes in his book. I don't have my stuff set up like that anymore, but I can confirm that what you want to do is possible. Maybe someone who is still doing that stuff will be able to give you some more up to date help. But I did it all with the help of Anderton's book. Best wishes.
  • Thanks gtaus,
Found I could control selecting only the first 128 presets (80 in user bank and the next 48 in next bank, all I want to be able to do) with DAW. Good enough.

  • There was someone else on the forum not that long ago that was asking similiar questions as yours. He actually started running not only guitar presets, but also light changes via midi, if I remember correctly. If you want to do more with midi, you might take some time and do a seach on the forum for those posts and contact him directly. It sounded like he wanted to work up a whole light and sound show from midi. But I haven't heard from him in awhile so he may have moved on....

Anyway, saw your post was never answered and thought it must have fallen through the cracks in the forum. Sometimes that happens.
  • Yes, I've seen the midi control subject on many other forums. In fact it is similar to my direction, having midi control more than just the music aspect. I have figured most of this out, but my issue was how much I could control the gnx4 in that equation. Such as I'd like to control the MP3 and wav player with midi commands. Also volume, bypass and pedal, but I can't figure out the commands, even if possible. Now at this point I may just take the unit out of the game and use other resources to achieve the desired result. Besides, even with supermodels I've found the unit may be better suited elsewhere.
    Thanks again for your input.

I know you can change presets on the GNX4 via midi, but I have never tried controlling the other stuff such as volume, bypass and pedal. As far as I know, I'm pretty sure you cannot control the mp3 player or OBR via midi. The GNX4 can do lots of stuff, just not everything. Good luck on your project.
  • I was able to change almost everything via midi conrtoller on my GNX1, buy took a lot of time to learn and break down the command numbers.

In the end, easier for me to stack presets by each other than try to do it all in one.
  • Right brother. Much easier to stack up the presets to the 128 positions. Besides how many presets do you really use? right?
What I really cared more for was finding the ability to control other parameters, like sound, bypass, stomp control, MP3/wave player (for live play application)....but not even having full control over all presets indicates may be impossible to control anything else.
For my purpose at this point it's just leading me down another direction with different tech, so all may be better in the long run anyway. GNX4 was cool in it's day.
    In His name.
