Your other instruments
I started out with piano. I kept with that for about a year. Just long enough to learn the basics, then took up guitar and trombone. The trombone I liked, but hated the music I was being taught through the school band. (about 2 years marching band and classical recital) I was young, (pre-JV sports) and didn't think about staying with trombone in blues and jazz, where I would have had an interest. I would have had to take that interest on my own, like I did with guitar. Well, I guess I never missed it enough to wish to take it back up though, and besides, I was well into guitar.
Mid-80's I got a violin. I loved the instrument, and was learning it fast, but I basically took it up when I got divorced, to keep my mind elsewhere. Once I started dating again, I lost interest and sold it. (too bad, it was a real sweet Roth) This was back before DVD lessons and internet. The violin was a good fit for me, and about the only instrument that allows me to enjoy classical music. I sorta like guitar for classical, but only to listen to, not play. Violin is totally different in the way I admire the instrument. I have guitar for my rock and blues, which is my favorite music interest. But when I hear classical violin solos...I'm equally fond of it. Especially when I hear stuff like Transylvanian Lullaby, which is that haunting solo on the Young Frankenstein movie.
I'm planning to get back into violin again. It's really the only other instrument I have an interest in, and I miss it. I'm not real big on bluegrass, fiddle, folk, or other violin stuff, but I'd be that guy who sneaks up on your dinner date with some romantic melody. As I get older, it also may be the only way I can still charm wimmin. :?
One other instrument I play is a deerhide drum at the yearly Chippewa Pow-Wow.
... It's a Native thing, but I'm only so-so at it...too much white eyes blood in me. I get dirty looks when I'm out of sync.
The Manitou Spirit (sound of an Eagle cry) can only help me so much.
