Need 'Easy' Hard Rock/Metal Song Suggestions

Hey guys, I'm trying to move my band into the direction of some harder Rock 'n' Roll or stretch it as far as to some metal songs. Not death metal or scream and shout metal, but something harder than the classic rock and roll we currently play. The songs should be relatively easy for us to add to our list - which means simple repeating patterns with great beats. I'm thinking something along the line of Judas Priest, \"Another Thing Coming\" which seems like a relatively easy song for a group of guys to put together without years of practice. The songs should be instantly recognizable to the crowd and maybe a past favorite, since we are essentially a cover band. We just don't have any metal and very few hard rock songs in our current lineup.

We don't have months to work on any one song, so 'easy' means something that most of us can pick up and play fairly well in a couple of practices. It just can't be too technically hard because as individuals, we're not technically great. We are average players out having fun on the weekends gigging at local venues. Looking forward to your suggestions. Thanks, guys.

To old? How new you wanna be/get?
  • I'd like to find some music in the 1990's or 2000's. Sometimes we play to patrons that are younger than us, and they just are not too much into some of the 'classic' rock we have on our list. Our songs go over well with the 45-55 year old patrons, but less so with younger crowds. I would say our average patron we play to is maybe in their mid 30's. We need more music for them and younger ears.

  • Thanks. I'm downloading the songs now to take a listen to them. The only song on the list that I know is Them Bones by Alice In Chains. I'm out of my comfort zone on this type of music, but that's why I'm asking for suggestions. Appreciate any and all other suggestions.

I left out Black Sabbath because I wasn't sure if you consider that death metal.
Anything else comes to mind I'll pop back.
    LOL.
  • I'm building a great list from your suggestions. So far, we only play 2 of the songs you guys suggested. So I will be spending some time this week downloading the songs recommended and checking them out for the band. The only thing constant in my cover band is that we are always learning new songs. But that's what I enjoy. Some songs have been with us awhile, but after 2 years of gigging, there are almost no songs left that we started playing when we first got together. I don't know if that is good or bad, but it's just constant change. I hope to find some new songs that bring a harder edge to our music. There were alot of suggestions of bands I really don't know. So it will be great checking out your recommendations. Thanks, guys. Keep the suggestions coming if you think of more.
  • Speaking of Alice Cooper - how about Feed My Frankenstein? Good high-energy song, and definitely 90s.
  • We do I'm Eighteen by Alice Cooper, and it usually goes over very well. I'll have to check out Feed My Frankenstein, I'm not familiar with that song.

\"I'm 18\" is a good toon, if a bit dramatic...
\"Feed My Frankenstein\" is a fun toon...it's the one he plays in the movie \"Wayne's World\".
  • Hey got more suggestions for ya

    Safe Home- Anthrax
    Countdown to Extinction- Megadeth
    Open car- Porcupine Tree
    Territorial Pissing- Nirvana
    Smells like Teen Spirit-Nirvana
    Black Hole Sun- Soundgarden
    Outshine- Soundgarden
    Collision- Faith No More
Just a Man- Faith No More

  • if you are playing for the 30yo crowd, try a little '90s \"alternative\" music....

    R.E.M. - what's the frequency kenneth
    Meatpuppets - Backwater
    Sublime - Santeria
Screaming Trees - Nearly lost you
Alice In Chains - man in the box
Stone temple pilots - s e x type thing, wicked garden
Ugly KId Joe - everything about you
Soundgarden - fell on black days
    White Zombie - Thunderkiss '65
    anthrax - only
Butthole Surfers - who was in my room last night
Green Jelly - 3 little pigs
    Candlebox - far behind
    Nirvana - rape me
    smashing pumpkins - zero
    Offspring - self esteem
    collective soul - gel
Filter - hey man nice shot
    Seven Mary Three - cumbersome
    maryilin manson - sweet dreams
    cracker - low

not all metal, but these are some of the songs my band plays and they go over well with the 30something crowd (I know this because this is my age and the music I grew up with)

PS. all are \"easy\" to play

Yeah, those songs are/have already been on my list. I'll have to check out the others. You know, there is no shortage of good songs, it's just a matter of trying to find ones the band likes to play and the audience likes to hear.

All you guys are expanding my interests in songs I really don't know that well, which is good, because sometimes I think we only play what we already know and feel comfortable with playing. I'd like to be able to crack out of the routine and fire off some really hot songs. Especially ones I did not grow up with and maybe the younger 30's crowd will enjoy. Thanks.
  • Hey, this turned out to be a pretty cool thread. Some very good suggestions here.
  • Taus- I know you play bass but a lot of these songs are 5 string or detuned from standard. Just an FYI

Thanks for the head's up. I do have a 5-string Yamaha Bass, probably my most expensive guitar on the shelf. So, if I really need a 5-string, I could cover that without any problem. Also, I don't mind if I have to go into Drop D tuning for a song. With the GNX4, it's not a big deal to retune before/after a song. If the song is in some other kind of tuning, I'll probably pass as my bandmates are only playing one guitar, in standard tuning, and we really don't want to carry additional guitars to our gigs.

We are not purists to the original in the sense that we often have to transpose our songs to a different key for our singer. So a standard tuning, half step down, really doesn't mean anything to us. But you are right, any tuning change during a set would slow down the flow. Thanks.
