Tone Test-RP250

Hello, I am new here. I have been a longtime user of the RP250, and I thought I would share some of my tones here. Although I don't use this live, I find it to be a useful tool in creating some tones quickly and getting ideas recorded. Here is a demo I recorded using the device. I realize there is some slop with the tracking in a couple places, but the point is to hear what I have tweaked here.

As I Am-Dream Theater (backing track taken from guitarbackingtrack.com)

Guitars are quad tracked with two of my patches. I can upload if anyone is interested.

  • Big sound, why are you not using the 250 live?

The guitar tone is convincing, though heavily distorted. Suggest that you consider dialing back the gain and see how it works for you. It's remarkable how much less distortion even \"heavy\" guitarists use on their recordings compared to what most people think. Computer Music magazine has published a number of articles on this topic in the last year.

Did you record using the RP250 as the audio interface, or did you take the audio output from the 250 and put it into your computer interface, or...?

  • I use a Hughes and Kettner Switchblade amp for all of my live duties.

The individual patches I used to create the tone all have much less gain than what you think you hear here. I think you are perceiving the amount of distortion to be much more than it actually is due to the quadruple tracking of the guitars. One was a pretty tight tone using the DigiSolo sim, and another was a looser Recto patch. Together they create this wall of sound thing in the clip.
