Tempo Change Advice/Suggestions??

http://files.me.com/tyler.wessels/ff6mkb.mp3

I'm trying to combine two pieces of music; the distorted part is 102bpm and the acoustic part is 80. I picked those two tempos for each part because I like the way they sound/feel at those tempos.

At time marker 1:30 the song goes from distorted (102bpm) to the acoustic (80bpm) and then back out to 102bpm. Going into 80bpm sounds ok to me (not great) but coming out feels like a wreck.

Does anyone have any general or specific suggestions on how to smoothly transition from one tempo to another especially when they aren't halved or doubled?

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks,
Tyler

  • Man that was cool! You are very tallented man! I dig what you come up with. I like how you kind of combine styles BUT man I say when you sing etc.. that is your strength you have a great voice! you can flow with the Rap & can obviously write & flow that BUT to me anyhow I dig your vocals when your singing 8) Your guitars are ALWAYS dynamight with cool drums & feel to your tunes! As far as what to do about such abrupt changes in tempo of a song? you got me man? I can bairly get a song together with 1 tempo your beyond me a tad Tyler :D I'm sure you'll figure something out. Keep jammin man! 8)
  • Tyler, Doesn't really sound to terribly wacked to me. 8) Perhaps comming out of the 80 @ 2:25 Hold that chord for a few, a touch longer before hitting them ot's or dives ( whatever your doing there ) and going into the riff? Or maybe a short pause then a snare smack to wake ya up and start digging into the 102 riffs?

But like partch I ain't no song writer either.. Heck I am still trying to figure out what people mean by 9's and 10's when pertaing to strings  :P

    Irreguardless good stuff! 8)
  • Thanks for the feedback guys. I thought about sustaining one of the guitar chords througout the change from 80 back to 102 so I'll give that a try.

I also like the idea of just popping them awake with a snare hit...I'll see how that sounds too.

    Thanks guys.

  • You do got a good voice tyler. I've done experiments with different tempos and they turned out all right by crossfading one part into the next.
You might have to change the ending and beginnings of the chorus and bridge to musically fit better harmonically as they crossfade but it could work with this one. Good lucks.
  • Interesting indeed Tyler, kinda mixing 2 musical genres together there. I'm with Roger on the transition, try crossfading during the switch and see if that works for you. Very cool stuff as always, you have some great guitar tones going on, the acoustic tone in particular is sweet. Your vocals are superb, even though I'm not a fan of rap, you do it very well. Looking forward to more from you.
  • Right on...I'll give the crossfading a shot.

Thanks for all the feedback and compliments on my voice.
