Looks like we're not in Kansas anymore!

:)

Upped another new tune on my soundclick site.

Toto - Hold The Line

Apologies for the blip in the file halfway through, the backer had this in it already.

Didn't realise it was there until I had done a take.

I did this one for a quick bit of fun as it's such a simple song from the guitar's point of view!

I did one take for the rhythm guitar and one take for the solo, which I know is not correct to the original, I just improvised it.

Would love your thoughts again peeps. :)

Peace all.

  • Nifty that was good! Always liked that song. Sounds like your getting some good backing tracks. Anyways great job man! Everything sounded real good to me 8) Take care :D
  • Nice job! Liked the solo a lot.
I always liked ToTo...good talent in that band, and good songwriting, which I prize highly.
So, where are you getting your b/t's? They're pretty good!!!
  • Thanks guys,

    appreciate the listen.

Shredd, I get them from different sources but just copied this from a previous post for you:

I know what you mean about decent backing tracks.
    They are hard to find.

I found this one (and quite a few more on a site I found on Google)

I used to use www.guitarbt.com but I think he is having trouble from Mr. Vai and his lawyers at the moment
Hope he's going to stay around for a bit!

So I found this track on www.guitarbackingtrack.com

I just hope this site doesnt go down with legal pressures!
    Gulp!

    I spose it's a case of \"get 'em while you can!\"

There are a lot of midi backing tracks on both sites but if you trawl the site you will come across some great tracks

There are some good ones if your willing to trawl :)
Think it's time to try some of my own stuff next.

    Thanks peeps
  • Sounds good there Nifty, as usual. You have some great chops! Wish I could solo like that. Your tones are excellent as well. Well mixed into the BT.

I've checked out those BT sites as well as a few others, they are great to jam along to when you don't have others to jam with.

I wait with baited breath for some original material...

    Nicely done as always.

  • Thank you TP

I've been trying with my solo stuff but just can't get it right at all.
I'm using your material as a yard stick! and er.....getting no where near!

I can't get what I hear in my head on tape correctly....if you know what I mean!

I promise I'll get something up soon, good or bad! :)

    Take care.

You flatter me with your accolades Nifty. Don't sell yourself short, you have some real talent from what I've heard so far. And believe me when I say not everything I have put to tape is worth listening to. You just need to push the red button and play with conviction, and in the end with the talent that you possess, you will get what is in your head out and on to tape. Recording music is a trial and error experience to say the least, and not everything you record is gonna be great. But the more you do it, the easier it gets to come up with something that sounds good to your toughest critic, namely yourself.

Keep it up man, I always look forward to hearing your posts. :D

  • Thanks for the kind words Peat.

I do really think your material is great though.
The mixing is fantastic and it's obviously a great help that you sing so well.

I just have some songs in my head (I've even written the words for some!) but I can't get them down right at all.

I seem to have the knack of mixing guitars well in to a backing track but when I have tried with my own material it all just sounds so amateur!
    Which is quite frustrating!

I'll keep trying though (until it get's too much again and I do another backing track :) )

    Thanks again anyway.
    Take care.
  • there is an art to mixing tacks, that is for sure. One that I am far from being a master of, that is for certain. For me, i find that if I can lay down a clean sounding track with the right levels it takes a lot of the pain out of mixing. If your tracks are all recorded at the same or at least similar levels, then mixing becomes a much easier chore. Like the old adage goes \"don't try to fix it in the mix\". Try and record as much as you can dry, and add effects and or processing later on. It gives you a lot more flexibility over your final product. Sometimes you can't do it that way and that is alright too, there are no hard and fast rules in this game. It's all about if your happy with end product or not. That's what's great about recording, you have as many chances as you need to get things right.

just out of curiosity, what to you use for recording other than your GNX and a computer?
  • Hi Peat

That's all I'm using, the GNX and Computer.

I do add cakewalk and sonar effects and I have also dabbled with Amplitube but everything is Direct Input rather than a mic'd cab....if that makes sense!!

    Is that what you meant?
  • Yes Nifty, was just curious about your setup, whether you were working totally in digital or if you had any analog rack gear (preamps, eq's, compressors, ect.).
You can get some quality recordings with just a GNX4 and your computer, but if you are looking to get that \"professional\" sound, you may need better
A/D converters, better preamps for the tracks you may need to mic up, ect.
My advice is use what you have and try to make the best recordings you can with what you have available. Hone your recording skills before you go out and get more gear. For me its all about getting clean tracks recorded at a level that is usable in a mix.
  • Cheers Peat

Back in the day I was in a band I had a lot more gear for live, but since I'm just recording for my own pleasure now I will try my best with what I've got, just like you said.

I'm having loads of fun just tinkling about but I can imagine I would be in 7th heaven with a full recording studio/treated room!! :)

One day maybe......when my lottery numbers come up!
