Ovation?

Any salad bowl lovers out there?

So I go to pick up this guitar! Lady says 'hey have a drink' me, not being one to dis' C'ptn Morgan, especially when he is acompanied with some buddies dressed in some Long island mix say \" Ok!\" So now it's dark, nice fire cookin and Morgan won't shut up! she finally hands me this guitar. Morgan say's ' hey an ovation copy' i think to myself who'd copy Ovation? Morgan says ' hey tune it' I'm thinking what is this strung with .. rusty bailing wire? Morgan says 'hey for rusty bailing wire don't sound to bad and it projects' I'm thinking morgans right. but dang these frets are sharp! did someone start a fret job their'll all flat!

So it says Academy on the headstock. Has an Ovation sticker in the body. According to the numbers on the sticker and Ovations website, if it is an Ovation it's a 1979? aluminum fretboard, plastic top and of course plastic bowl. neck joined at the 14th fret. 100% acoustic, no piez around a 25 1/2 scale regular Ovation head, not slotted! Haven't mirrored the inside yet. This is all I know.

Anybody Know anything more about this Ovation? If it is?

....in the Jump To Model drop down box, choose Academy Guitar.

Your question...yes it is an Ovation. There are several models under the Academy name.
They have an electric acoustic version too, which I've seen, with a cutaway shape. Model ADZ-550E

Back in 1974 I bought an Ovation, and loved it.
I was a fan of Glen Cambell, who played Ovations. I don't remember the model, but I remember the guitar was awesome.
Last Ovation I had was an Applause elec/acoustic...purchased in 2004, but I didn't like it as much as I thought I would.
Traded it in when I bought my 2004 Epiphone Elitist '61 Reissue SG.

Something new with Ovation is a built-in MP3 recorder.
    First in elec./acoustics... http://www.fastcompany.com/blog/kit-eaton/technomix/ovation-idea-guitar-records-itself-you-play

Naw, I ain't paying this time I found them sites, and then some! Besides you'd charge me for picking up the slack while the shredd is busy house huntin'?

several models ! Thats the problem . The big sticker in the body the Academy sticker the one that would tell me the model # is gone, so I don't know what model it is what I do know is that it isn't the KA-14 or 17 joined at the 12 fret not the 14th as this one is. .. and they have the slotted head , LoL which is the only pics I can find!

Something new with Ovation - their a division of Fender now!?

All in all not a bad find for a freebee! The tops popped behind the bridge causing it to tilt forward a bit and to fret out. Not to bad. I should be able to shim it and get her to do just fine for an extra axe for outdoor fun or to keep in an alternative tuning etc, an emergency dug out canoe if it floods. As sharp as them milled frets are... slide work only might not be a bad idea!

Guess if I ever feel ambitious A wood top project? Not like the bowl is ever going to rot.
  • From what I found, there are 4 or more Models of Academy/Ovations.
Some were made in the USA, and some were made in Korea.
I'm using an edumacated guess, they made necks that joined at the 14th fret in that Model K.
Maybe done in later years as the 12 fret models didn't sell as well as they hoped.
These were built from '78 until mid-80's I think. Must not have sold well.
Hard to get people away from wood in a guitar, even laminates. It's enough the Ovation has a plastic bowl back.
Guess they had to keep the wooden top and neck to keep it appealing.

If you want me to continue searching I will. I'm keeping a running tab on you. s6vhaha.gifloudlaugh.gif

  • I have an Ovation Elite 1778-LXHB Very nice guitar! Sounds great plugged or unpluged! Plays like an Electric. I've always dug the sound of Ovations & they kind of pushed in different dirrections not staying purely traditional 8) I mean Hey that Lyncherd Round back I mean that is doing something differnt & Original. The Applets instead of round sound hole cool! They look & play beautifull I'm glad I got one & will never part with mine! :D
