Do other GNX's sound as good as the GNX4?

Apologies if this is in the wrong section!

I've got a GNX4 which sounds great. However, the other guitarist in my band wants to also get a similar kind of pedal.

I play my GNX4 through the PA when we practise. That is what my other guitarist also wishes to do.

Now, I'm thinking that the GNX1 would offer the same sound quality as the GNX4 - only with less features such as the recorder, the drum machine etc etc. However the basic sound of it, and the sounds you can create, would use the same tech and still have the same sound quality. Is this true? I recently bought a Digitech RP90 and the sound compared to the GNX4 was AWFUL. Really bad.

So, first question is - would a GNX1 sound as good as a GNX4.

The next question is that if I look at the back fo the GNX1 on screen shots it doesn't have the speaker compensation button. Is that only something that you need if you go through XLR outputs? As the also notice the GNX1 only has 1/4\" outputs.

The reason I ask this is because I need to know if the GNX1 is going to sound as good through a PA as the GNX4 does. As we plan to gig with these beasts.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks

Bill

  • I don't think the GNX1 will work out for you. It's an older model. But the basic workings of the GNX4 are the same as the GNX2 and 3. I have the 3, and tried the 4 when it first came out. I was amazed that there was no difference other than the USB connector on the 4 instead of the SPDIF on the 3.

There are some things you can do with the 4 over the 3, but for the most part, they are very similar.

I have read posts that 2 GNX units don't sound well together, so this might be an issue for your situation.
  • Thankyou!

I have just found a GNX2 online. £100. Recommending my friend he go for it.

I am puzzled by what you say about two GNX's not sounding good together. That is news to me.

Does anyone else know anything about this scenario? We would of course be using different settings and we would have the balance set up so one of us would come more from one speaker, and the other from the other.
  • one other difference berween the GNX3 and GNX4 is that the GNX4 has the spkr comp. Huge difference for me, anyway. I have the GNX3 and the GNX4 and by daisy-chaining the GNX3 thru the GNX4 (on the way to the PA) I am able to still make use of my GNX3. I set up the GNX4 to have \"dry\" 1/4\" inputs (into which I connect the 1/4-inch outputs of the GNX3). This at least allows the use of the GNX3 in certain situations.
  • I was thinking that the spker comp would be required if you wanted to plug into an AMP rather than a PA?

So are you saying that with your GNX3 if you plug it direct into a PA then it doesn't sound so good?

I have had a look at the RP series, in fact I own an RP90 but the rock distortion sounds just don't sound any good. Very muddy and just bad. I have spent time working on getting a good sound but nothign to touch the GNX. Would looking at a better RP, like an RP500 or an RP250 give a better rock sound? Does anyeon know?
  • I struggled to get any kind of an acceptable live sound with the GNX3. I finally settled on playing through a PA head driving the Black Widow speakers in a Peavy Heritage guitar amp (with the power/amp modele removed so it was essentially just a Black Widow guitar speaker cabinet).
When the GNX4 came out, I can now quite happily go direct to a PA AS LONG AS the SPKR COMP button is engaged (pushed in) on the GNX4.
I play in duos with backing tracks at relatively small venues so going light on equipment is important. Daisy-chaining my GNX3 into the 1/4 inch inputs (set to \"dry\") of the GNX4 (with SKPR COMP on) works very well for me anyway. The sound is quite acceptable for my little gigs and once levles are set properly in the patches and for the master volumes of the GNX4 and GNX4, this works quite well. This way, I have two guitars all pre-mixed adequately before the signal even gets to the PA. I simply connect the GNX4 XLR outs to a couple of MIC input channels on the PA head and adjusting the EQ for the room is all done at the PA head which I keep right next to me on stage, stacked up on milk crates for reach-convenience tweak if needed. The GNX4 is the main ingredient of my (tonal) sound. My daughter plays piano and guitar so when I gig with her, we connect her digital piano into the 1/4 inch inputs (set to \"dry\") of her GNX4, her acoustic guitar (which has an XLR output on it) direct to the MIC input (set to \"dry\") of her GNX4, and her electric guitar to the guitar input (of course) of her GNX4. We have her GNX4 SPKR COMP off because we daisy-chain the 1/4 inch outputs of her GNX4 into the 1/4 inch inputs (set to \"dry\") of my GNX4 with SPKR COMP on. I only have a few channels on my little PA head so this is out of necessity. If I had enough channels on my little PA head, we could connect her GNX4 direct (with SPKR COMP on) to the PA of course. Of course the limitation to our daisy-chain set-up is that we lack individual EQ control for each instrument but once this is all set ahead of time along with overall instrument mix volumes, it is just a matter of EQ-ing the entire instrument mix at the PA head, to sound OK with the venue. Very convenient, and sound quite OK for the little gigs that we do.

The short answer that works for me anyway is the I no longer use a guitar amp - I connect my GNX4 direct to my little PA with SKPR COMP engaged. I set up all my tones and amp and cabinet sims in the GNX4 ahead of time at home, with the GNX4 connected to a couple quality studio monitors, and I EQ-tweak the GNX4 signal at the PA head to work with each venue.

Like I said, there are limitations, but this works very conveniently and adequately for my gigging needs.
  • I didn't go through all the posts - I'm too busy stressing about my recent job loss and wondering if it'll discourage Shania from a hot tub frolic...
But remember that the GNX3 can only take a 128MB SM card - hard to find - and the GNX4 can take a 2MB CF card - cheap, plentiful, sturdy). I don't know that either the GNX 1 or 2 takes any extra storage for loops, patch storage, yada...
