Guitar scale??

I keep seeing all sorts of stuff about guitar scales what exactly do you mean when you say scale?? I also noticed that i was so used to a cheap guitar I had been putting way to much pressure on the strings I have been playing around with my new one and it works great with hardly any pressure on the strings at all.

  • My definition, in a single sentence: a collection of notes that can be used in combination to play melodies. Or a collection of notes that, used in combination, define they key and form that key's chord progressions. An analogy: pallette - set of colors that a painter uses for a particular picture.

Oh, and my favorite. Scale - a series of notes created by overlaying the most prominent unique overtones of the tonic (namesake of the scale), the tonic's first unique overtone, and the tone's to which the tonic is the first unique overtone.
  • Yeah, what illi said

    Following the painting theme:
\"It's your world. There are no mistakes, just happy accidents.\" -- Bob Ross

The major scale pattern is WWHWWWH where W=whole step(2 frets) and H=half step (1 fret).

The scales go back to key representation on the staff. In the case of C Major, you have no sharps or flats. Thus the scale is : CDEFGAB(C)

If you move to G Major, you will see the pattern at work again.

    G (W) A (W) B (H) C (W) D (W) E (W) F# (H) G

Here's a decent visual representation of different guitar scales:

  • lol no not that scale I meant I see people taliking about guitar scales being 24.5 and 25.5 and such not the music scales :)
  • It's the scale length of the neck, in inches. There's quite a range, depending on the git'r. Gibs, Fenders, others, they're all different. Some people get a better feel out of one scale length or another...
  • ok that makes sense. I could see how a smaller scale may fit smaller hands better than bigger scale I notice i really have to stretch my fingers a bit but I am getting used to it. thanks for the info. :)
  • Here's a little info about scale length for you..

My main axe has a 25 and 1/2 inch scale, and I run 13 guage flat wounds on it.
