  • ENGLISH!!!

And it would help if you asked a specific question we could try to answer...
  • I speak Oregonian.

Download a free version of GuitarPro. http://www.guitar-pro.com/en/index.php
Then gather all the tabs you want off Ultimate Guitar. http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/

I like GuitarPro and Ultimate Guitar for most of my song choices. Helps me allot, and I'm sure you'll have fun, and be glad you got back into guitar. 8)

\"Oregonian\"? Is that anything like Urdu, or Mandarin? :P
  • Thank you yeah all I wanted to know was why my tablature wasnt opening and I told you what programs i was using. I fgured if I just said my files werent opening you would need more info on what I was trying to open them with but I guess I gave to much info?? sorry
  • It is limited to 15 days?? ok then I better get everything set I need before downloading it so I actually have a chance to check it out thanks a ton I appreciate it :)
  • Right, it's a 15 day free trial, but I'm sure you will love GuitarPro. Download it on a Sunday, so you get two weekends on your 15 day trial...if those are your days off.
I tried some of the other tablature editors, and liked this one the best.

Click on the little fretboard icon in the top column, next to the piano keyboard, and it will add the fretboard above the music.
    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/26/Guitar_Pro_5_screencap.png
This will show and name the notes, on the frets, as they play. It also helps allot to see the position of the notes and the shape, making it easier to memorize.

When you click on \"sound\" on the top of the page, next to \"tools\"...it lets you adjust the tempo to anything you want. For instance, if the tempo is 120bpm...you can slow it down to 60bpm (or any speed you choose). There are so many great options with this gadget.

Check out the sticky thread (above you in this forum) on \"Favorite Web Tab Sites,\" for some more tab site choices.

Try a search on this site for Backing Tracks. We've posted quite a few free backing track sites. I've downloaded all my favorite Satriani song backing tracks, among others, which I enjoy using sometimes.

YouTube has many free guitar lessons. That place is loaded with all kinds of stuff on every part of learning. If your focus is on legatos, picking, scales, even guitar set up...just browse what you are looking for.

The web is saturated with free stuff that is cool and fun. I've enjoyed this one for a few years now, called Mr. Fastfinger. http://www.guitarshredshow.com/
Don't worry about the skill level...it's fun as hell. There is some stuff you can pick up on right away though.
Download this chord finder to your desktop. http://www.hughes-and-kettner.com/chordfinder.php?hus=10478bf8fa7e45bb47cb18ffc407ece8
It will give you a great little gadget on your desktop. Real handy to have.
It adds an icon to your desktop, and if your security gives you any grief about it, just click it's okay, and not necessary to warn you every time.
Then all you have to do is click the icon, and it opens this great little chord finder.

    :P It's weird. :?
Kinda like Klingon I think. Lotsa Trekkies moved into the Realm, since the Borg took over the Southern regions. :?
Then there's the Vulcan's (Vulcanos Chicanos) to the North.
(snif...smak...swallow) That make any sense? :?
  • Thanks I got it and it is awesome and thanks for the part about changing tempo i was looking at a Trivium song and it was so fast I couldn't figure out where i was supposed to be playing lol that will help and when i get it at a slow speed i can slowly speed it up till i have it at down at full speed:)
I havent played in 17 years or so and I was so so then but I am having fun and I forgot how sore your fingers get lol
  • Here is a tip to help you with your fingers right away. If you are tuned to E standard (E/A/D/G/B/E) ... drop the tuning 1 semi-tone (to Eb/Ab/Db/Gb/Bb/Eb) and your neck tension will drop about 20 lbs. and be much easier on the finger tips...plus the tension will not be so sloppy to loose good picking, or harmonics.

With 10's on, if you drop your tuning 1 semi-tone, it is like putting on a set of 9's. Or say with 9's the tension is about the same as a set of 8's.

I always prefer the Eb tuning anyway, with a set of 10's. I get the advantages of a heavier gauge, with the tension of a lighter gauge, and the Eb tuning is a fuller richer tone.

Much depends on the scale of your neck too. I'm playing a 26.5\" scale neck right now, vs. my other guitars which are 25.5\" and 24.75\" scales. When you play a longer scale neck, the same gauge strings have a greater tension.
So...a set of 10's on a 25.5\" scale neck played on a 26.5\" scale neck has the tension of a set of 11's. That gets to be too much tension for accurate or easy bending.

Anyway, if you happen to have a shorter scale neck, that one will go easier on your fingers too, until you get some callouses built up.

Lots of guitarists marveled at how SRV played a set of 13's, but he also dropped the tuning quite a bit...to a 10 gauge level tension. :)

  • I am so impressed with this software I cannot believe the advancements from when I was attempting to learn in late 80's early 90's. I am going to purchase this program for sure. I am at a loss for words on how much info and stuff computers have allowed. Thanks everyone for all the input and Help here :)
  • ok you lost me with my neck scales and such I am using 9-42 guage strings and I have a Ibanez RG270 I have 24 Frets thats about the extent of my knowledge. On that note do you know where I can find info on Guitar maintenance/adjustments I have seen a little info on string action settings 3.5mm off of 8th fret and I seen something about neck bow adjustable with a rod in it is there a specific degree of bow?? I am a CNC programmer/Operator so I could make a guage to be able to adjust neck to a certain degree of bow.also what is the ideal amount of distamce between strings and pickups?? is a lot of this stuff just personal preferences?? thanks for the help.
  • That guitar is a 25.5 scale neck. Stick with those 9's, as you will get good overall action and won't have to spend time doing allot of set up. You really don't want to mess with a floating bridge, unless you are prepared to do all the adjustments. They like 9's. You have to decide for yourself how much spring tension you and your guitar like. I'm a three spring man. Main thing is having it set level to the body, so you don't alter angle and action on the fretboard. I like action set at 2/32nds at the 12 fret...both bass and treble sides. (you can go lower long as they aren't buzzing the frets) Setting the intonation is one of the first things you want to learn. You'll be amazed at how the right intonation can make a difference. So easy to do.

I'm not going to get carried away with set up talk. I could go on and on. Get a good tuner. I recommend the Boss TU-15. That is what I use.
All this stuff is easy to learn. The only ones telling you \"ooOOOooOOoooo you can eff up your guitar dude!\" Are the techs who want to charge you $35-70 to set your guitar up for you...or a girlyman. I mean...yeah sure...a moron can screw up a neck, but you aren't a slobbering idiot...so dig in and learn. Once you learn all the steps, you can get your guitar perfecto! I'm a luthier by heart, so I enjoy this stuff anyway.

You will find tons of info on set ups. Go to your browser and enter Guitar set up. Also, go to YouTube and type in the same thing. You can get specific, if you want and browser a particular task, like guitar pick up height adjustment. You can literally find anything. On YouTube today, I accidentally came across \"make your own guitar picks.\" The discarded CD made sense, as it is a good thickness of plastic. I must have 40 picks right now as it is though.

You can search around and find a manual on your guitar, or amp, or even Floyd Rose bridge PDF manuals, Pick up wiring, etc.. You never know where you will see stuff. I got and Edge Pro PDF off the Carvin.com site for one of my bridges. http://www.carvinguitars.com/manuals.php
  • wow Thanks I assumed that I should be able todo all my own adjustments. I figure if they have people in the music shops do it I should be able to learn also. I have 3 springs on it right now. it came that way. Thanks for all the help I have sme pdf's I have downloaded I will keep looking for more can never have too much info. :) I am kinda a technical geek I have to know how things work and why or i feel like im missing ot on something always have been that way since a kid. Thanks again for all the info.
  • Hey I got a funny question I went to that site you had linked and I have a floyd rose tremelo like the one shown.the way I got mine was with the strings strung up the tube where it shows saddle lock screws I wonder if it was setup wrong I know it had a screwdriver slot on the end of it I wonder if i have a locking type i see no reason for threads to be on them.
I looked at the neck and seen it was bowed the wrong way when held up and looked down tried to adjust it then noticed i had fret buzz I also noticed that the strings are really close to frets at the top of the neck and closer i get to bottom they get further away so I adjusted string height at the tremelo and again ran into fret buzz I was wondering if they make Shims for the top to put under the locking block?? I would think you would want the strings to be equal distance from each fret all the way down the length of the neck?? I may be wrong but if ya have any Ideas I would appreciate them.
