It's an M13, no it's an X3 Live, no it's a RP1000!

As like most of youguys I play a variety of gear. Its not a one brand VS another brand thing for me...just whats usful and sounds great.
Having said that I spied a Digitech thumbs up on the Line6 forum thought you might wanna check it out.

It's an M13, no it's an X3 Live, no it's a RP1000! Gasp!I know this is a line 6 forum, and I have been a proud supporter of Line 6 for as long as I've been playing guitar. I love my Spider Valve, I'm still jonesing for when they come out with a X3 version of the SV, and I'd kill to find a decent used variax right about now. But this is also a community, and peope here I consider my friends, or atleas they are on my list of people not to kill when I go postal.

I have had an Pod X3 Live for about a year and the longer I have had it, the more frustrated I have become. To me many of the models sounds fizzy and hard to control. I know some people are getting great tones out of it, but for me it just wasn't happening. I tried, lord knows I spent hours, weeks, months of my life fiddling with it. Once I got my SV set up just to where i wanted it, the poor X3 sat in the corner, gathering dust. Even going into the spider Valve, I could not get as good a tone with it as the SV preamp. I'd find a nice tone that worked with headphones, but then couldn't get it to sound right in practice. I know all about the FM curve, but its was missing something

I tried playing with it to use for effects only but it sucked the tone out of my amp. I posted a couple times looking for suggestions, but the answer always seemed elusive. I twiddled knobs till my fingers cramped. Finally I gave up

I was tempted to by a m13 to go with my spider valve, but the lack of of a wah pedal and the steep price point for just effects modeling scared me off. I wanted a modeler for headphone late night practice sessions, but also something I could use for effects with my SV. I settled on the shortboard for the sv to control the limited onboard effects, and figured I would play with the x3 more to use for headphone playing.

I had seen the rp500 and 1000 on the web and figured it was a toy compare to my X3. it certainly was UGLY! I briefly considered buying the rp500 but the lack of the effects loop meant all my effects would have to be before the preamp.

Well I finally saw an RP1000 in the store yesterday. Within 5 minutes of playing it, I new that for headphone practice, this was it. Easy tones right out of the gate, the fender sounded like a fender, the mark IV sounded like a mark iV. I figured what the hell. Once I got it home and started playing with the pedal board mode, and the amp loop AND the stomp box loop, I started thinking, maybe I oughta try this with the SV. Within 10 minutes of hooking up the 4cm , I had 5 different sets of effects pedals, running pre and post SV, and it sounded awesome, no tone suckage, no fiddling with knobs. I also found it to have the more distortion stomps and they sounded much better then the X3.

One unit to do amp modeling, and act as a standalone amop modeler? Good tones out of the box, easier to use interface, ( I oversee development of software for computer illiterates all day,so it's not like I couldn't figure my way around the X3) it sounds great either way with both my SV and My Superchamp XD, and alot less pedal square footage on the floor. Sounds like a winner to me.

Not to say its perfect, for the life of me I can't figure out why Digitech would take the Cd input off the the Rp1000, but leave it on the rp500 and every other rp pedal, and did I mention it is butt ugly? Good thing I' m stepping on it with my feet! I wish you could save the amp bypass on an individual preset, instead of a global button, but then, you can always program your preset to use direct, instead of amp modeling. The X3 does give you more flexibilty, but then, I think that what drove me nuts was the constant fiddling!

I hate to say this line 6, but the bar has been raised. I think Digitech has a winner here when it can take the place of 2 of your flagship products. I would love to see you address this, becuas enothing is sexier then an all line 6 rig. I will give you props for a much better industrial design of the X3l pedal

I put my X3 up for sale and sold it, returned the shortboard to guitar center (i still have my fbv express) and got all my money back that I had spent of the digitech.

I'l let you guys know how it holds up after the honey moon, but I tell you waht, I have never so completely loved a single piece of gear as quickly as this one!

Definitely worth considering if your looking to augment your SV.

I'll have to read that review again, something sounded familiar...hmmmmm. smile.gif

I've never been to the Line6 site, so I know it's not me. Besides, my reputation here would precede me, and I'd probably be banned from there in 10 posts or less. s6vhaha.gif

Ya well this was taken from a \"hostile L6\" forum...I do not share some of there dislikes but i want to try the RP 1000 thru my SV now ;)
The SV is a great amp butt the built in FX it has are best used in a pinch... not not to my likeing... I like Digitechs chorus and comprssors way better as well as the BAD MONKEY for overdives and lead boost..I dont like the SV chorus or reverb much its not subtle enough for me.

Like I said I really dont do the \"Ford vs Chevy\" thing in the music world I like so much stuff out there Its hard to stick to just one brand.
    this year:
my floor board has a Line 6 shortboard to my SV/Bogner 1x12 amp.
a Digitech Bad Monkey for overdrive and boost and a digitech vocalist live 2.
...wish Digitech made Combo amps i bet they would rewl!
  • The RPs have more variety of compressors now, too. At least the 250 did, I'm assuming 500 and 1000 do.
  • The RP 1000 is looking like a sweet FX rig and a backup amp all in one...(G.A.S)...
  • I'm not going to bash on line 6, I like their stuff.
But, I surely like my gnx4 and I am a few weeks from picking up an Rp 500 or 1000. One of the two. I have no need for the recording features on the gnx4 any longer. I am looking only for the live uses which, I think, the RPs offer. I can use the gnx4 for a backup.

So, which one? The 500 or the 1000? For my needs, the 1000 seems to be riddled with exras that a live application doesn't really need. What am I missing, if anything?
  • I used a GNX3, a Spider valve and a Fender Hot Rod deluxe the other night when my 2 guitar buddys came over to Jam. They all have there sweet spots 8)
I love the GNX series :!:
I use a Amp for live stuff this year because its easy to setup and I can keep up and cut through with our new drummer ...somethin about a tube amp + my fav stomp a Bad monkey... live with drums thats whats working for me right now. But thats just this year :lol::lol:
next year it'll be somethin else  but thats part of the fun :D

I just got mine(rp1000) and I played already a show withit.....although I have to admit that I still need to tweak the beast for performances...It sounds great!. I bought the 1000 because it offers the amp loop which will give you your amp preamp sound vs. the colored sound of the GNX. Also the amp loop entails you to put the effect pre or post amp.....
This thing is great! The Whammy is much smoother on the pedal then the GNX4, it has more amps modeler.....more effects.........There are 3 compressor effects....
  • Proof that you should be careful what you post on the internet! Not to dig up this old thread, but it just came up in a google search on a slightly related subject and I had to do a double take, because I am the poster on the Line 6 forum who wrote that!

I had to register to post here, because frankly you only got to read the first post on that. About a month after I got the digitech, it stopped working on me completely! Dead as a doornail. Needless to say I was frustrated. My next step was to get a GT-10. The amp model on it sucked, and I mean sucked in a big way, but the effects were amazing. Unfortunately the whole point of this modeler experiment for me was to go straight to the board and avoid having to lug an amp.

Having said that, having tried all the \"big 3 now\" I am back on an X3 live, but I think I had to go through all those models, just to learn how to tweak, because as much as I love the Digitech sounds, the reliability scared the piss out of me! I'm getting alot better sounds out of the X3 now, but I definately had to change how I approached it

One of these days I will get around to sending the digitech back to have it fixed and see if I can fall in love all over again.
  • Hahaha A month? Ya man! your right only a month and it stopped working .. BAM dead as a door nail... And you love the sound so much , that you just sat/sit on it? Serious dude! Why post such a post? A MONTH? Where are you at McMurdo? Didn't want to take it back to where you bought it? Didn't send in the warrenty card? I don't get it! Only a month old?
If I was you, and loved the sound as much as you say you do/did... Someone would have A) Been giving me some money back.. B) Fixing my pedal ... C) or giving me a new one... But just to do nothing
( going by the date on the OP here) for six months??

Naw! Sorry mate, I ain't buying that load of...

But you are right about.. Being careful what you post on the internet!.. Cuz there ain't no proof anyone is who they say are! ..LMFAO..
  • Any unit can break. Line 6 X3L has had a rash of returns and some even went as far to say it was released prematurely. It took them a while to work out the bugs, Dealers around here reported nearly 50% returns. The other thing of concern was the copper painted bottom panel that chipped away and shorted out the board causing really weird and intermittent failures. The second big recall issue was the switches. I'm not sure how many of those were returned but the immediate numbers were dismal.

My friend and band mate is a huge Line 6 fan, and all I heard from him was what a POS that thing is.

Now I'm the type that don't like to cheer when I hear somebody's gear does not work. I was happy to hear from local dealers and servicers that most of the problems were remedied within the first year. Still, I'm sure they had significant concerns with all their loyal following.

I can't tell you how many times a guy's X3L went down during a show. They had to reboot, it would run, then fail. Then they grabbed their backup or I gave them a unit to use in place of that if we ran the sound for them. When their gear fails, its embarrassing, a pain for the band, and a pain to interrupt the show for technical difficulties. But that can happen to tube amps, SS amps, mics, or a simple cable.. it's the nature of the beast. All I can say is always be prepared in the event of an equipment failure. Enjoy what you use for your own personal tastes. As long as it works for you and your audiences are happy with what you do... the rest is just for message boards.

Always keep in mind that most problem cases reported are from those with an actual concern, not the many hundreds or more of others that do not post in forums saying their product is in working order... which is rare by comparison.

Hmm, your right except I'd be happy to post this same message under my bluekanoodle username on the line6 forums, as well as Macnn.com, ultimate-guitar.com, harmonycentral.com and mylespaul.com to prove that I'm one and the same.

Having said that, why didn't I return it? Well it was past the 30 days, barely, and if you must know 2 weeks after I bought it, I kicked my alcoholic, bipolar, cheating wife out of the house after spending 3 years of her abandoning me and our 2 kids.

I had to deal with not only working a full time stressful senior position in a company with 435 employees who were counting on me to help keep them employed in a shitty economy, continue to raise a 9 year old and a 7 year old through the hardest times of their life, deal with divorce lawyers, and still find time to play the damn guitar, so I'd rather spend my limited time playing working equipment, not waiting on the phone to get an RMA, running around to get it shipped etc.

I know I have a year warranty on it, so maybe, just maybe I'll get time to do it some time.

So you can take my 2 cents or leave it, I' don't give a f*ck, I wasn't even bashing the thing, simply stating what happened and my experience with the product.
  • relax mate! I don't really care why... The post as posted just didn't make sense to me..I was just simply stating how it looks to me... If I made a claim to being the op of a post I would probably supply a link to the original.... But that's just me!.... I know you wasn't bashing .. Hope your stress levels have subsided ... must be nice to be able to afford $500 gear and not care about getting it to work....... Basically all I was saying...
