JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Billy Powell, the original keyboard player with the southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, died early Wednesday at his Orange Park home.

Powell was 56.

Orange Park police said Powell called 911 just before 1 a.m. complaining of difficulty breathing. Paramedics found him in his bedroom responsive.

Ross Schilling, a publicist with Vector Management, said they believe Powell suffered a heart attack, but an autopsy will be conducted to determine his cause of death.

Orange Park police told Channel 4 Powell had an appointment with his cardiologist on Tuesday, but he did not go.

Powell moved to Jacksonville as a child and attended Bishop Kenny High School, where he met Leon Wilkenson, future bass player for Skynyrd. He originally joined the band in the early '70s as a roadie. Before a gig playing at the The Bolles School prom, he sat down at the piano and impressed lead singer Ronnie Van Zant enough to be invited to join the band as its keyboard player.

Skynyrd went on to sign a national recording contract and become the best-selling southern rock band in history.

In 1977, Van Zant, along guitarist Steve Gaines and his sister and backup vocalist Cassie Gaines and assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick were killed when the band's chartered plane crashed in Mississippi.

Powell suffered facial injuries in the crash, but eventually recovered. He was the only band member well enough to attend the funerals of those killed in the crash.

In 1987, Powell rejoined Skynyrd for a tribute tour and has toured with the band ever since. He and guitarist Gary Rossington were the only two original band members who continued to record and tour with the band.

Powell is survived by his son, Richard, who was at the family home early Wednesday morning.

  • Tragic. Talented guy, and 56 ain't very old.
That said...the picture in the news story shows a not-very-healthy-looking guy... :(
  • I used to really dig that band. When I was in high school my mom walked into my bedroom looked around at all the posters covering the walls and noticed an album lying on my bed...she turned to me with her coolest look on and said \"Lin-Rod Skin-rod\" I really dig that band. She never understood why I  gave her the your so uncool look.

Obviously wasn't the Pronounced LP laying out!

Probably the end of the 'new' skynyrd. Last I heard VanZants ole lady has the rights to the band. she stipulates that their has to be atleast 3 original members to continue

Powell hasn't looked healthy for along time..... proctologist maybe... but skip your cardiologist appointment....... See what happens..
  • The piano solo on \"I Know A Little\" is one of the best I've ever heard.
  • i think it was either 02 or 03, i was a chauffeur in the quad cities area, when they came to town. i got dispatched to the radisson, and Billy Powell got in. i knew he was someone, just not sure who, so i asked what he was in town for, and he introduced himself. he said, \"first stop, a liquor store, and then i need to fill some prescriptions.\" he then talked about their coach ride in. you see, in the quad cities, there are some 'truck eating bridges', very old, very low train bridges, and the tour buses couldn't get under them, so they had to meander thru davenport's old neighborhoods, the ones with alot of old, large mansions, but that are all in various states of neglect and restoration. now at night, as they were coming in, Billy and the current touring band thought that these were haunted houses. alot of them. they become somewhat obsessed with how cool this was, a whole section of town devoted to these haunted houses, and he wanted me to drive him thru these streets again. he talked about how after the crash, him and the other remaining member drank the sorrow away, and how in the old days, they would do shows drunk, but that now, Billy made the rule, \"play music sober, but after the show, its on.\" he reminded me of swamp thing from the movie con air, and his voice reminded me of john goodman's. very cool, very down to earth guy. r.i.p.
