Best free recording software?

Does Digitech offer a free recording software so that I could record a few riffs/songs while using my RP150? If not, what is the best FREE software which doesn't require a purchase after trial?

I just want to be able to put up a few tracks of my playing on this website.

Audacity does rock.

N-Track is cool, too. It does MIDI tracks as well as audio, which I think Audacity may not... There re both free and pay versions, but the free version is pretty functional.

Another question: what is the difference between USB and MIDI recording, in a nutshell? How do they both work? What are the pros and cons?

looks like the latest free n-track has added some annoying stuff to get you to purchase the full copy (an intermittent three note organ sound gets added to any stereo mixdown) so I guess that's off the list for 'free'. However if you compare its purchase price ($65) and functionality to the big packages it's still a good deal.

+1 on Reaper. Either that or Audacity; both are actually free.

Just downloaded Reaper. They make you purchase the software after 30 days. Looks like Audacity is the best 100% FREE software out there. I'm just getting started with DAWs and don't want to spend any money until I need more features than I can get free.

I assume Reaper is better than ProTracks that comes with the GNX4?And works with the GNX4?

*edit* - I was just checking out the Reaper site, and it doesn't look like you have to purchase it after 30 days. Are you sure?

Yep, positive. I didn't see anything on the website, either, but after downloading it, there was a registration screen which required you to register or else not use the software. It said you must purchase the program after 30 days.

It looks pretty decent, though.

Actually you dont have to purchase reaper, its just most ppl who use it end up paying for it, but it remains a fully workin program even if you dont.

Ive been using it for over a year now, the only reason I havent purchased it is because I hate using my Credit Card online, if it was on the highstreet I would probably cough up the money for it though. Its a great piece of Software

So what happens at the end of 30 days with Reaper? You just keep using it and they don't make you buy it, even though they SAY you have to?

sounds to me (if it stays on your comp after 30 days) that it's probably got less features.

Nothing happens if you dont pay for reaper, you can even get all the latest updates.

At the end of the 30 days a little screen comes on at the start which counts down from from 5 sec or so saying buy me, then you can either buy or continue to use free of charge.

Reaper is described as \"uncrippled UNEXPIREING Shareware\"

Wow, that sounds pretty sweet. I'll have to re-download it. I saw the registration screen and the \"free trial\" notice and got scared away.

It looks like Reaper blows Audacity out of the water. Looks a whole lot nicer and has more options.

Audacity is more of a Sound Editor. Reaper is geared towards multi tracking i guess.

The programmer puts alot of time into reaper and they release updates monthly, so I guess the payment thing is just a way of thanking the programmer and the amount of time he has put into it.

You can even download user made Skins aswell which is pretty Kool
