This should be interesting tonight
We are playing on the main stage tonight outside at a fall festival starting at eight with 1 1/2 hr show. Weather is perfect for an outside evening event (temp here now in dwntwn LA is 91 F). Actually nice gig, good money and nice sound system with provided sound guys who actually help us set up and break down in addition to running the board. This is our second year at this festival and it draws its own crowd in addition to our regulars.
Deal is, we are doing it this year with our old guitar player who quit in a huff last August. I think he thought we would have a difficult time replacing him and he drew a line in the sand, probably thinking that we would beg him to return and he could demand pre-conditions (hmmmm, where have I heard that before?). The singer and I called his bluff and advertised on craiglist, auditioned five guys and found this monster player out of philadelphia who is a production manager with guitar center. They sent him to GC corporate here nearby (Westlake Village, CA), he came to one of our gigs in early Sept. and signed up (old guitar player was committed to three more gigs, which included tonight).
Anyway, it is going to be interesting with all of the tension going on. It will still sound professional and all, but it won't be much fun as I, for one will not be much into it, or maybe I am just being a puss about it? As you have already guessed, the major tension originally was between him and I.
I'm just frustrated because I can't roll the new guy out until November and this should actually be his gig.

Man up and get over it, then you'll have a good time.
You practice like mad, you get a few gigs under your belt, you get the big head and think you're the best thing since sliced bread..
Then you're replaced in a heartbeat by a guy who blows your stuff away..
The music business is indeed can be at time an extremely humbling experience, and I don't know anyone who has been playing for a while, who hasn't been humbled..
(I remember the 1st time I saw Chet Atkins live\") Started looking for a bridge to throw my gear off of..LOL...
Good luck on your gig tonight, and I expect you to do well..
Watch out for your old guitarist. He's either gonna come out wailing like he has something to prove, OR..He's gonna implode..
Either way it ought to be a hoot..
good luck!!!
But ask yourself, what's the worst that could happen? I mean, he'll play in tune right? He'll play the right songs? He won't walk off stage?
After that, nothing else should really make that much difference, as far as the audience is concerned.
Report back once it's over.
This episode is a very vivid reminder that no matter what activity you're talking about, there's ALWAYS someone out there who's better than you at it, and usually lots of people.
You have to get out there and have a good time regardless of other knuckleheads might be doing. Like Gene Simmons once said when Peter Criss and Ace Frehley of Kiss were having problems, he said \"why am I going to let these two knuckleheads decide my future\" Now Gene Simmons worth over 100 million.
Hopefully everything went well and you had a good gig
For one, if it's his last gig, he may have others checking him out.
Two, he might shine to see if the group would reconsider.
Good Luck and have fun!
Funny how perception and reality never really get to know each other. After I blew off steam using you guys as a sounding board (sorry bout that, I do have an evil twin who pops up every now and again, he's actually the more artistic one), I showed up to the gig very relaxed and ready to just have fun. (Ed hits it right on.....Just man up!).
Anyway we didn't really even sound check. We started a mic check and as soon as I knew all of the mics and monitors were hot, I walked over to the lead guitar player and said \"let's start\". We went right into a long version of SRV's Coldshot and the soundbooth had the mix by the middle of the song.
The rest of the night went just as smooth. We were supposed to break at 9:15 and finish at 10.30, but we just played through and did a 2hr and 15 minute show. Huge crowd, great gate, and we booked two more events and the whopper is we also inked a coveted New Years Eve event from all of this.
LOLLL, funny how things play out.
