Mangling The Classics #18 (featuring the songbird)
Well, whaddya know. I managed to pull together a tune that doesn't shame me into selling my git'rs to high school kids for lamp-making projects.
And there was much rejoicing!
This is a tune the songbird loved, and sang great, although I was \"meh\" about it.
BUUUUT...I did spend some time getting a decent instrumental track done, and of course when I finally got to record her vox (http://www.guitarworkstation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8063), I just couldn't get them to sync with the song. You'll surely notice the occasional timing error. Honestly, she sings this song MUCH better than this. Hearing her sing songs like this is why I played with her. Moistness.
OH...and did I mention, she's hott??

Was the timing issue the reason that the chord doesn't match the melody at the end of each verse or was that the wrong chord? I honestly can't tell which.
Has \"the songbird\" been professionally trained? With the exception of some enunciation problems (which the training could quickly fix), she is better than 90% of what I hear on the radio (and, of course, she's hot). That kind of talent/hotness combo usually equals stardom. Is there more to the story I've missed (i.e. personal problems that have prevented success) or is she just undiscovered so far?
Anyway, thanks for sharing. That was definitely worth a listen (or three).
That scenario happened to my band many years ago. We were auditioning singers, and (luckily) I missed one session. The rest of the band called me and said \"We've found a singer, she's great.\" I listened to the tape and was amazed how bad it was. A few days later, we practiced with her to see if it would all work out (which I knew it wouldn't). She walked into the audition and she was incredibly beautiful. I don't understand the science behind it, but she actually sounded much better when you saw her. But since most of our audience was women who wouldn't be influenced by primal instincts like men, we went with my gut feeling and found a singer that could actually sing.
It seems you have the best of both worlds.
You know, that works both ways, though. If a woman can sing, she goes up about 2 points on the ten point scale for me
The timing was the key issue in making all of these songs sound like songs...as I've bemoaned loudly and longly, the vox were recorded separate from the instrumentals, and under utterly dreadful circumstances.
As far as the melody occasionally not matching the chords...well. I'll say this and leave it at that - I play songs the way they're written (or at least try to ) and she sings them any dam way she pleases. And correcting her makes you a \"music nerd\".
But I suspect if we'd recorded her in the studio, with 'phones (so she could hear what she was singing to), it might've come out a little closer.
She isn't professionally trained; just born with a gift. She's one of those who ran around the house singing in diapers, before she could even talk.
Her vocal flaws tend to be due to her self-absorption (which entitles her to sing any dam way she pleases) and her attitude that she sings for fun, so it really doesn't matter how good/bad, right/wrong she gets it, as long as she's having fun.
Don't get me wrong - she knows how great she sings, and she's proud of it and could even be her own worst critic (maybe her only own critic), but I don't think she'd concern herself with it unless she'd pursued a career in it.
And yes, she has a helluva personal story, though I can't say it's directly what's kept her from succeeding. But I agree, she sings better than a lot of what's out there. Maybe she didn't sleep with the right people.
In fact, that idea reminds me of how aghast I was back in the 80's when GnR was making millions and marrying supermodels, all while putting out absolute CRAP albums...at the same time, I was paying 5 bux to go to a local roadhouse/rock club to see a band from Cleveland that was ten times better. It's the business of entertainment, I guess...
Ed- You say luckily you missed that session. Just wondering why? Do you think you would have got caught up in her beauty along with the rest of your mates? Great reminder on not listening with your eyes! Unless of course your putting together a Spice girls or Pussy Cat doll outfit
This is the chick who sang so nice that I played Linda Rondstat and Shania songs just to stand next to and hear her sing.
Now, granted they wouldn't have turned out to be squat if I hadn't put in sweaty time in my studio to make it all work...BUT, the fact is that the songbird didn't even warm up, listen to the songs, nuthin'. We just rolled and sang.
She DEFinitely sings like an angel, and if she weren't so self-absorbed and difficult, I'd think she WAS an angel, worth pursuing to the ends of the earth.
The sad part is that she's utterly computer illiterate and wouldn't know an MP3 from an MPG. :? Otherwise, I'd be sending and getting tracks from her all the time. I don't know ANYone who can sing anything like her.
And did I mention, she's hott?
You did well.
