Mangling The Classics #17

OK. Now...before you guys start telling me how good this one sounds, how amazing the songbird sings, how I should be hot tubbing with Geffen while negotiating my touring contract...

This heinous mangling is a tune that I absolutely love, and so does she. When we played with the other chick (who did the female harmony vox), even unplugged this tune was a show-stopper for us.

This pitiful rendering was one of the worst of the songbird sessions, and the hardest one to put together. The vocal timing/sync alone made me long for death.
This is also the song I spent the most time on doing the instrumental trax.
Not to mention that this song has aMAZing harmonies in it, 80% of which are missing in this version.

Buuuut...beggars can't be choosers, right? How many chances does a lame dog like me get to play with a songbird like her?!?
So I did my best. Hope ya like it...

man i know it didnt turn out like you wanted but dont sell it so short, let the listener decide whether or not its poor quality. i honestly havent listened to alot of your things because youve introduced them as such pieces of..... not sure i can say that here but you know where im going. anyway their better than you think and by now people know it didnt turn out as good as youd have liked but they did turn out so dont be so hard on yourself. keep up the good work
  • Sounded pretty good to me, maybe you should take it off the \"mangling the classics.\" The vocal timing may have been +/- here and there, but what do I know.
  • Compare your playing, mixing/mastering to mine. I'd say I am the only one here on this forum, that has the right to self deprecate!

Now if you was saying heres a completed project ready to put to market! maybe there might be something to be said. But for what they are , fricken very nice shred! I think you did a great job considering all you said you had to over come! Thumbs up mate!

    You guys are very generous.
When I slam these efforts - in advance of anyone even listening to them - it's 'cuz I know I could've done MUCH better, and I'm not proud of what actually was done. If I take into account the obstacles, I guess it's good that I got anything out of it...but recording music for others to listen to is something that makes a statement - \"this is what I can do\". And these efforts are not something I'm especially proud of...
I mean, I've posted tunes that I sang, that really are shame-worthy, but at least when I did them I felt like I'd made an effort and done the best I could, and maybe even learned something new, or at least had some fun. These ones don't feel like that; they feel like barn jobs. At least these ones feature the songbird, who can make a beer commercial sound like art, so that helps, but like I keep saying, if I coulda got her into the studio, these would've been awesome...

Thanks...I rarely toot my own horn about stuff I post...once in a while I'll finish something I'm really proud of, but I also realize where I sit on the talent scale.
Don't forget that I'm a listener too...I listen to these closer than anyone, since I play and record and mix them (and occasionally even write them!). Granted, I subject my own efforts to higher standards than they deserve, but I want to at least feel like I did the best I could. These tunes with the songbird don't feel like that, 'cuz I put a lot of work into the instrumentals, just to have them sit in the can for six months with no vocals, then have to try to butcher in her vox that I recorded under the worst of circumstances. This is why I'm so disappointed in them. They coulda been killer, but instead they're barn jobs.
For something I AM proud of, check out this recording:

  • Man Shredd I liked that one! 8) Probably my fav so far!
  • So I finally get to hear one of these so-called mangled classics and I am pretty disappointed. I expected a mix of jumbled instruments, bad drum sounds and a shrieky vocal track.

    I am very disappointed.

The vocals were fantastic. She can really sing. The bass and drums were really, really good. Way better than I usually come up with. I guess my only suggestion would be to bring the solo WAY up to match the vocal level. Otherwise, it's a fine example of how good a home studio can sound if it's in the right hands. Have you considered advertising for a female singer to record and produce?

Anyway, great song. It's way too good to be attached to this thread name....very impressed with this one Shredd. I think you're over-analyzing something that stands up just fine, in fact mighty fine.
  • Thanks Buzz. Like I always say, your recording is so well done that I admire it every time. Your song-writing makes me want to join a quilting club, you're so outta my league.
This girl really can sing, can't she? Once I got here vocal trax sync'd to the instrumentals, they sounded OK. She just saves them.
The series of songs I did with her are ones she n I had been playing together for a while. I put these in the Mangled category 'cuz of these reasons http://www.guitarworkstation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8063, and I thought they could've come out WAAAAY better than they did. As it was it took an enormous amount of studio work to even make them sound like songs.
The \"Mangling The Classics\" series started waaay back when I first got my GNX, and started recording stuff. My efforts were pretty shoddy then, and my vox were - and still are - pretty woeful. So a lot of the songs I took on weren't exactly hit material. If you want to know why I started posting them as \"Manglings\", go back to the early ones.
I also really appreciate the compliments on the playing...bass and KB's are pretty new to me, so I'm really happy when they work in the songs.
I really didn't put a lot of effort into the mix; a little reverb here, a little stereo mixing there, and getting the levels in the right neighborhood. The hard part was sync'g the vox, so I had to spend a lot of time on that.
I've just moved to Colorado in the last few weeks, and my new job is a real handful so far. It won't stay that way, and soon I'll get back to playing and recording and maybe even writing again. And I sure would love to find another girl that can sing...I love female vox. Anne Wilson's backing vox make me moist.
