Anyone dig this like me?!?

One of those obscure, \"who?!?\" guitarists I like is Robbie Blount, who among other things played in Robert Plant's studio and stage band when he was solo for a while in the 80's. Saw them in concert with Phil Collins playing drums and Bob Mayo (of Frampton fame) playing backing git'rs and KB's. Best $12.50 I ever spent.

But I was wondering if this one particular passage has an affect on anyone like it does me.
It's a Robbie Blount git'r solo in the song \"Like I've Never Been Gone\", from the Pictures At Eleven album. It enters at 3:35, starting with a really tasty arpeggio climb.
This is a solo that's been wetting my panties since the day I heard it, at least 20 years ago. I could be petting a dog, waiting for the dryer to buzz, trying to figure out if there's enough gas in the car to make it to the nearby town, and reciting a phone number from memory - all at once - and when that solo comes on, all the hair on my arms stand up. After 20 years.
Is it just me?

BTW - this is an invite to tell of a riff/song/whatever that does that to you...

  • Well this may sound silly but Eldon Bishop's guitar solo on Fooled Around and Fell in Love, always tickled my fancy.

Any part of Surfing with the Alien makes me weak in the knees too.

Too many to list really. Cool question though

    Peace

Yah...I know that everyone has a riff that feels like that.
But the one I mentioned has always done that to me, never got tired of it, even if I wasn't in the mood for the song.

There's been lots of riffs or whatever that I thought were incredibly cool, or showed great imagination or talent, or really conveyed something through the song, whatever.

But I heard this one again today and it struck me - again - how this particular riff has had this profound effect on me - without a lapse - for so long.
It's like the day I learned how to play the opening riff to Xanadu..profound moments in music...

Thanks, I found the version of \"Like I've Never Been Gone\", from the Pictures At Eleven album, with Robbie on that youtube link above. I never heard this before. I enjoyed it.

Tak Matsumoto is one of the guitarists you don't hear much about, that I really like. He does a lot of Satriani/Vai style instrumentals, as well as lead work for bands like TMG and B'z. This link just gives you a intorduction.

I like his asian sound, and liked his signature guitar so much, I bought it....and it does have that soulful asian quality, and so much crunch, it could be used as a weapon. Has special wound burstbucker pickups.

This YouTube is a live version, solo starts at 3:40. But isn't NEAR as pretty as the studio version. I highly recommend it. Makes me wet my panties every time.
  • Manitou: Thanx for the youtube links. Always love when you guys post youtube links. Love the finish and wood on that guitar.....fantastic.

  • It's almost like the question; What is the meaning of life? ie Why does a particular riff, melody, Song, Band ( their collective sound ) rise above all others! to any one indivdual ?

This is a tough question shred! How many will actually admit to a riff they like. (I call em closet favorites) For fear of getting the ole

Myself their are alot of songs or just the solo that make me go , aww ya that's why I picked up a guiter! To nail it down to one? I'll just say that there is always a skynyrd disc in my five disc magazine, the other slots rotate regularly :lol:
  • After you play a while, you pick up a lot of riffs, from guys you dig.

After you get past the riff copying part, I think the real challenge, is to play with whtat's in your ear and heart..

The riffs, scales, arpeggios, are just words in a dictionary. It's up to you to form sentences from them.

(That's where the ear and heart stuff comes in...LOL..)..

While Yes that is true. Is it not also true, that the authors of today still admire the works of others? Or are you saying that at some point, you stop admiring what others have accomplished , and only see their faults and or limitations. Thus embarking on a quest to write your own novel?
  • At some point in time, you must speak with your own voice..

You just need the chops to get there..

Thas' whut I'm talking about. Some of these pros in major bands are so skilled that they take a simple passage and infuse it with oodles of feeling, meaning, poetry. Gilmour is extremely good at this.
I think that's why the riff I mentioned at the top does that to me.
  • Maybe you can get so good, you can admire your own musical voice...there are times I can express myself, and it gives me chills, almost as well.

Tal is right, you can not get there, without building the vocabulary. I stumble on it from time to time, and it isn't so much the chops, as how I speak it. (accent)

    I can recognize when I \"sound\" a little like so-and-so.
I'm still a long ways off from developing my own voice.
I'm not sure if I really need to either. I think we all have our limitations, as well as the limits we hope to achieve.

    For instance...
I enjoy \"sounding\" a little like Satch...but I honestly enjoy listening to Satch even more. That doesn't bother me. I guess my love for playing guitar is never going to exceed my love of listening to guitar, or admiring skills way above my limits.

When it comes to playing guitar, it's probably one of the few purely selfish things I have..besides my personal politics and religion. I do it for me, and have never felt the need to share it.

Comedy...now that is something else. I crave attention with my humor.

  • I agree with you, and Tal too.
I've had brilliant moments where I played something just the way it sounded in my head, and I'm really happy when I happened to have been recording at the time.
But...it's not like I can do it on purpose or on demand. That's where expertise and real professionalism come in. And even those guys sometime take many takes to capture \"it\".
Now, I'm old enough and un-committed enough that I know I'm never going to take Lifeson's job...it's enough for me to be able to take one of their songs and even do it justice, and not hack it to pieces. But I'd still rather listen to RUSH than listen to myself play it.
Like you, I play git'r mostly for my own self-indulgent satisfaction. I can't think of ONCE in my life where I got a date or scored a girl 'cuz I could play.
  • I don't know how many of you guys are into Bill Evans..
    Fabulous pianist..

He has a lot of thoughts on these same subjects thrown out on this thread. I've listened to this several times.

    \"The universal Mind\"
    5 parts,
    Here's part 1

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jm6V7bWnVpw

A discussion with his brother, about music, and a lot of the topics in this thread are addressed. Whenever I get confused about where I'm heading musically, I go back and listen to this. Bill Just gets it so right..(At least to me)...

So aside from traveling down your own creative river, you take a moment to enjoy the sentences assembled by others :P And I agree it is freakin' beautiful! 8)

  •

    I hear ya Rawb..
Evans is one of those guys that makes me think..
\"I thought I knew about harmony, until I knew about harmony.\"..

If you want to hear Bill Evans style on a guitar, Pick up Lenny Breau's
    \"Guitar Sounds of Lenny Breau\".

The interview stuff is pretty good as well..
  • Ya me too. \"I thought I could sing, 'til I got out of the shower...\"
  • Speaking of musicians, who put it all together..(Riffs, arps, Scales..)

This is a pretty amazing performance from a guy that can go from BB to Wes, to Pass, Duane Allman in a heartbeat..

(You can tell the guy has studied everybody and everything, yet it comes through in his own voice..)

Personally I think this might just be one of the best Blues guitar performances on the web..

    Enjoy Mr. Jack Pearson..

    BTW..
I think somethings wrong with my Les Paul. It doesn't sound anything like the one Jack's playing..
