SS or tube amp

When using the GNX4 do you prefer a solid state or tube amp, what amp do you use?

Comments

  • Solid State.. It's a lot cleaner, and will reproduce the GNX4 faithfully..
  • what amp do u use or should i get its got to be inexpensive
  • For the GNX4...use Solid State.

I use a Crate Powerblock with the Crate 1x12 Celestion. (made specific for the Powerblock)
Bought both off eBay last year.
    Powerblock new cost me $100.
The Crate cab new cost me $150.

I started out with my old Peavey Backstage Plus... and like to use it for some patches. Bought it used for $25. I did put in a better speaker after a while.

+1 for the Powerblock. Simply an awesome piece of (discontinued) equipment. I'm running mine through a 4X10 Crate cabinet.
  • ++1 for the Power Block I Run mine thru 2*12 Lopoline Cab with Emminence mod 12's both of which is discontinued. Emminence makes comparable replacements suitable for modeling gear. I recently bought a backup block for around 100 bucks from Ebay so they still can be had. It truly is an awsome peice of gear!! 8) Small But powerfull, very portable. I doubt you would be disapointed with a power block. :D
  • anywhere i can get the powerblock
  • Good spot to start is eBay. That is where I bought mine.
I paid $100 for a brand new in the box, but I had to keep my eye
on the prize for over a month to find that deal.
If you are in more of a hurry...I think you will pay about $150 or more.
That is just for the amp. You will need a cabinet. The amp is 150 watts.

When searching eBay, you have to type in the search. I typed Power Block and got these examples.
    Power Block

Then typed in Powerblock and got these.
    Powerblock
  • so you go guitar to gnx4 to input of powerblock (then what)? and what settings do you use on the front of the powerblock
  • You need a guitar cab. 8 ohms mono will push 150 watt. 4 ohms you get stero 75 watts a side out. If you go out of the GNX4 into the front of the Block you want the drive levels very low & pretty much all knobs on the power block at 12 Oclock. I somtimes would cut some highs. Or somtimes you may want your level higher than 12 Oclock for more volume depending on your application & level needs? I never turned my gain past 12 when going in the front as it starts to not be so clean & adds it's own overdrive as you turn it up farther. I always have need of a clean ch so I just did not go by 12 Oclock. For you that might be fine?

The best way to use it though is going in the FX Loop in the back Mono side Best reproduction of Amp models your only using the power Amp Section of the Block. So now the GNX4 is the Preamp. Your level now is the little black knob on the back of the GNX4 little touchy. This is how I use it now in my setup driving a 4 ohm 2*12 cab. Both ways work well!! The power block is a pretty ersatile & works well with the GNX4! Sorry so long of a response!
  • no worries (about the long response) thanx do you use the left or right fx loop

    Left Mono.

You can check out this Youtube demo. As you can see, you can set up lots of ways.
Running external effects presents endless tweaks.
Just keep experimenting, and when you start to find the sound you like...keep records of your settings.
Get a 1/4\" T/R/S Y-cord. Or try the approaches this Youtube guy explains.

While you are at Youtube...check out some GNX4 demos. Pages of them.

Is it realy necesary to get the Y cable if you are Running mono all? I just use left mono out the GNX4 to Left in on the block. Sounds fine! I might try the RCA Jack thing just for kicks? If I do I would have run the thing basically all those ways then. How do you run yours Manatou? Just wondering.

The Y-cable lets you run the effects loop, putting the signal between the preamp and the power amp. You have to think in terms of two blocks, the preamp and the power amp. You will notice a difference in tone on some of your patches, if you split your signal between the two, using the effects loop, giving you line level instead of instrument level. (less noise interference)

The RCA method lets you bypass the preamp and speaker emulator.
I like this method the best. I get more pure GNX4 this way.

Considered as a functional block, an effects loop should provide unity gain - no gain, no loss of signal - and be transparent. I like the solid state more for this purpose, than my tube amp. But I don't know if a loop should be fully by-passable or not, or if it's best to leave the loop in the signal path at all times.

If you find the sound you like...I say, just make a note of your settings and hookups, and stick it to a bulletin board. If it ever sounds the same again...check the humidity of the room, was your bed made or not...? could have an effect on room acoustics. What guitar strings were you using? ...tuning? any outside interference...like a wife nagging? Thunderstorm? TV?
  • My goodness!! What a difference using the YES Monster cable RCA to 1/4 inch adaptor cable & running into the CD input on the back of the Power Block. I was not disapointed with this Amp in any of the other ways BUT man this is just as Manatou said the best way to run your rig with the power block!! Major Tone Improvements! 8) I still can hardly believe it! Thanks Manatou!! 8) I can hardly wait to run this setup theu my main Rig  WOW I can Hardly wait! Anyhow The morale of this story is: If your using a Crate Power Block & not running this way well just do it to coin a phrase you most deffinetly will not be disapointed! I mean I did not do any tweaking nothing just Major improvent plugging in and playing. Come on what do you have to lose for the sake of better tone 30 bucks??
  • That's great news Partchy! You are welcome, and it was my pleasure to offer \"sound advice\" for a change.
You've always been very helpful to me, as well as all the members here have. Reminds me of why I love this site! 8)

I agree. I just signed up at the JamSeesion forum, so I'd have somewhere to plead for dates while the DT site is down.
And...while there's a large membership and the crowd seems to be really into it, there isn't a \"friendly\" vibe there, sort of impersonal.
Reminds me why I love it here and why I like posting with all youse guyz here.
Even though NONE of you have set me up with a hott woman yet... :?
