shredd attempts to create...

OK, here's a new piece from me.
REPOSTED CUT VERSION 5/28
A few things about it...

This was a pretty ambitious piece for me. Besides writing it, I had to record a lot of tracks. And of course when it came to mixing, there was a lot of stuff to line up and have sound right together and all happen at the right time.
There's big empty spots again, like there was in Cost Of Silence...I wrote it to have vocals in it, but - as has happened before - my lyrics suuuuucked. So if any of you know someone who can sing or write lyrics, have 'em call me. 'Speshly if she's hott. 8)
And yes, I \"borrowed\" some piano loops to do this. The rest is me.
I used my Ibanez RG3, Dean Exotica el/ac, Peavey Cirrus bass, Roland Juno-60, and ZOOM drums.
This is the \"cut\" version; I took out the break, the 3rd \"verse\", and it's chorus...it's a little tighter now. New link posted:

...be kind... 8)

  • Very nice Shredd!! I wanted to listen last night just did not get the chance. Great job seriously man that's a well put together composition!! For being that long without vocals? Still did not lose interest way to keep the piece moving along!! I would like to hear this song with vocals & a message that fit it!! That would be neat to see someone take that on and see what it sounded like BUT as it is it stands well alone! At least in my opinion. I like the Piano samples you used as well! Your bass & guitar playing sounded as great! & the mix is spot on again in my opinion not that I'm some master or something!! I can tell you spent some time in this one. Great job!! It truly was good to hear something new from Shredd! 8)
  • Thanks for the kind words! I actually didn't spend a ton of time on it...once I'd built the 'structure' of it with the piano samples, it took me about a week to come up with the rest of it, including my typically lame lyrics. They were about being patient while waiting for good things to happen to you. Something I know a lot about... :?
Too bad too, 'cuz it's a structure that lends itself very well to vox, both melody and backing. Oh well. One of these dayz I'll just say screw it and record something with the vox, no matter how bad they are. That's what I do when I do covers - the \"Mangling The Classics\" series - 'cuz they're not my tunes and the only thing I have to be embarrassed about is my feeble singing voice, not my feeble lyrics.
It's so long because there's space left for the verses and chorus and even a bridge...but I'm glad the tune can sustain itself even without the vox. I think it's pretty.
And I've got a \"cut\" version in the works; one verse shorter, and no instrumental breaks. Comes in about 2 minutes shorter, for all you twitched-out instant gratification freaks. :P
If only I could get a fire going under the songbirds' butt...she's a great vocalist and a really good songwriter/lyricist to boot. AND she's hott. Too bad she's crazy.
  • Sounding good. I didn't care for the synth to much, but about the time i realized it was to loud a killer lead guitar came in and wisked my mind off in a diferent direction. Very nice, good mood song and am looking forward to hearing the singer match the beautiful melody, or contrast it with a gritty primal scream.
    Thanks for the tune
    d.
  • Shredd, great song. I'm with densco, can't wait to hear the vocals. If no vocals, just play lead to it--with a different tone so that you can tell difference between verse-chorus and the real lead.

I gotta learn how to mix as well as some of the songs I've heard here. You did some great mixin'. My songs still sound like a band playing in the living room with a tape recorder rolling.
  • Thanks for listening guys, and for the feedback. Mebbe the synth lick could come down a coupla db...
But my real issue is lyrics/vox. I suck at both and I haven't been able to round up any help in either dept. And Melissa Etheridge, Bruce Springsteen, and Gwen Stefani all hung up on me.
  • Wow, alright shredd, iliace is right. There's more to you than just drooling over internet pics of female celeb's. Nice tune 8) maybe you and buzzhaze can share an apt. when you guys get to Nashville!?

I wouldn't worry bout them hang ups, M.E <----that was what she was about, her career flamed ( nice pun ..eh ) B.S <----pretty much somes it up, over rated imo since his 70's sucess. G.S don't know.

You also said you couldn't play I suspect your lyrics are probably as good as your originals! :D imo .
  • Hi guys, and thanks for the encouraging feedback.
I guess I'm a little self-deprecating about my \"abilities\" 'cuz - frankly - I don't work that hard at it, and whatever talent I have could be much better developed. For example, I can solo in ANY scale, as long as it's pentatonic...
That, and it's important to have humility. No matter how good you are - or think you are - at something, there's always someone better.
As far as vox n lyrics...well, I'm not particularly proud of my lyrics, but I've certainly heard worse. Singing...that's another matter. My singing ain't great, and I'm very humbled by standing next to the songbird, who sings like an angel...
  • OK boyz, I cleaned it up a bit - since there's no vox (yet?), I took out the break, the 3rd verse, and it's chorus; so now it's shorter and definitely a little tighter to listen to.
Let me know whatcha think of it. And play it for all your hott single friends. 8)

  • Man I like that Shredd! That Solo just is great! I can realy sence & feel the emotion in it. & man that makes something realy good in my opinion regardless of what skill or technical ability's are BUT was it felt was it played with emotion? 8)
  • Niiiice!!! Sounds really good Shredd

No sweat. It's funny, tho not quite in a ha-ha way. If you lived where I do...you'd understand.
There was actually an article in the NEWSPAPER about a guy who hadn't had a date in 3 years that went to a Se+ And The City party and got a woman to pay attention to him.

WOW it is bad if the local paper writes an article about a guy who hasn't dated in 3yrs. Truely must be chickless there! You would think there would be alot of transiant muff to cozy up to, during the skiing season!?

Hope there isn't any sheep herders in your area! They would have to stay up 24/7 to protect their flock.

:lol: Yes, the sheep are nervous here...:lol:
Sadly, the problem is not that it's chickless here; there's some pretty fine ladies in our midst. The problem is that the chix are essentially uninterested in putting any effort whatsoever into guys. There's so many desperate guys here that they do all the work, right down to the dog n' pony show they have to put on to get a woman to pay even the least attention to them. Unless, of course, you have a shred of dignity or self-respect, which is clearly my problem. :?
Either that, or they put on an amazing act that they ARE interested in a guy, until she's been jumped to her satisfaction, at which time he is promptly tossed aside, to his chagrin and great disappointment.
This is one of those places where they have that cliche: \"here, you don't lose your girlfriend - you lose your turn.\"
  • I hope you don't mind me bringing up this thread again but I was listening to your song while doing housework and it's growing on me. I really like the drum sound and the feel of the tune. Smooth as silk. The piano parts are slayer. Is that you playing??? If so, are you for hire? lol

You should be doing more like this little gem. I really enjoy it.

    Thanks!!!

Glad you liked it...it's high praise for me, as I consider you one of the ace songwriters around here and I think you're a very strong player n singer too. 8)

Stay tuned for my next project, already underway; it's a fast, jammin', semi-club sounding...I dunno. i'll finish it and see what y'all think.

PS stand by for more big (non-musical) news, everyone!!! 8)
  • Wow Shredd, you are improving a lot. Very calming.
    Great job.

Thanks for listening! This one was a departure for me, since all I want in life - I mean, besides to be Shania's bathtub toy - is to be Alex Lifeson. But I really enjoyed doing it and I loved it when it was done.

is that common? for rush(and alex) to be such a big influence on you i dont think you stuff sounds like them, and i cant write like my influences even when i sit down and try. thats probably good though, its better not to bring up someone elses songs in the listeners ears.

Well, I have many influences and many git'rists I like; but I love RUSH music - listening to and playing it - and I think Alex brings the whole package. There's many players that're better than him at this or that, but to me he's got an incredibly rounded toolbox of skills, sounds, and songwriting strengths. And as I've written many times here, I think songwriting is BY FAR the most important musical skill there is. Look at how far it took Bob Dylan, and he can't even sing or play a git'r.
If I could write - or even play - like Alex, I'd be pretty proud of myself. And maybe women wouldn't consider me pond scum. :?

im a rush fan myself actually. i drift in and out of liking them because of the years that alex took a backseat to geddys keyboards but when they work together they can really create. and when else has a trio projected more sound then an orchestra(and played as many instruments) i wouldnt mind seeing your playlist for your rush for beginners cd, could just well inspire me to tune up to e for a little learning.

Don't forget RUSH has been together for nearly forty years. And one of their foundations as a band is to always explore new directions. This is why there's so much different music in their catalog. Some better than others, and something for everyone.
I myself wasn't crazy about the whole Counterparts approach, but some headbangers loved it. Signals is not a great record; some of the new stuff isn't terribly fresh or interesting to me. On the other hand, I think they have albums that are masterpieces and I'll probably have the Rush In Rio DVD for the rest of my life.
Sorry I can't relate to your tuning issues; I'm too stupid and/or lazy to play in alternate tunings. Makes my head hurt.

SO. Back to the thread. What'd ya think of the song?

Gave this a listen today. I really do like it.
So when is Shania going to call me back and help me write lyrics?!? :?
