Never run out of business cards....

We lucked out last night. Rocking hard at a gig, this guy comes up to us during break and says he loves our music. He wants to take some of our band's business cards back to his hometown so he can pass them around and maybe we can get some gigs there. I usually carry about 6 cards in my wallet, so I take them out and give a couple to him. He says thats great, but could I get about 20 of them! What the heck?? Fortunately, we had a box of 1000 business cards sitting out in the band van so we got him his 20 cards. I don't know if the guy was blowing smoke or not, but in reality, the cards are cheap and if we only get one gig out of 100 cards, it would more than pay for the trouble.

I really don't know what was going on last night, but he wasn't the only one asking us for a business card(s) last night. We easily went through 40 cards during the gig. Some of the people obviously just wanted a souvenir, I guess, and that is kind of flattering. But we have had people actually pass our business card off to bars and clubs and we have got bookings from complete strangers who just happened to like our music that night and put in a good word for us.

My bandmate has a wife who works at a printshop. They had a job order and there was a bunch of nice business card stock paper left over that was going to be thrown out. She grabbed the card stock and had them print up business cards for our band so we ended up getting about 6000 business cards printed for next to nothing. But even if we had to pay full price for the business cards, they have really been a great tool. We have people contacting us for bookings because of those cards. People who like our music are starting to ask for the cards as a souvenir. If we see other musicians in the audience, I always pass them a card and ask them for their card as a way of networking. So I just wanted to put in a small bit of advice we have learned, and that is to never run out of business cards. Take care.

  • I got a card from a local band who i had'nt heard of but were really good.
Next day I still had it so I was able to remember the bands name.
Getting cards printed is a great idea. Once my band is a little more experience I think we will probably get some printed as well. :)
  • my friend Mike has bailed my a$$ out a few times by having one of my cards when i didn't

sad thing is when folks grab them because they think they look cool
