Searching for AMP/PA Opinions on speaker size

So I'm returning my Crate 2x12 and getting either a keyboard amp or a small pa system. I'm doing some research and trying to decide what to get. Size is somewhat of an issue - though not critical - its going to be used in the a decent sized room in the house. I don't need a lot of power - anything over 100 watts is plenty - Mainly to play over a drummer.

I'm looking at a couple of different sytems. A behringer pmp2000 with 12\" pa speakers and a Yamaha PAS 300 or 500. I've also been looking at the Motion Sound KP100S Keyboard Amp which seems perfecr really - but the speakers are only 8\"

My main question is this - how big of an effect will speaker size have on the tone that I would get from the GNX. I've only ever had guitar amps with 12\" speakers (well, minus a small crate 40watt) and am a bit unsure of getting the Yamaha PAS 300 - the speakers are only 8\". I'm not having size envy or anything lol. I'm just not sure what the difference would be.

  • Go with the Behringer speakers if you want but have a stereo rig go with 215A speakers (powered) and your choice of mixer option down the road. You can always add a subwoofer later if you need extended bass. 212A's are ported and sound great for the price.

Many ways of running the rig, but future needs will dictate more of necessity and function. Powered speakers are good and give you mixer options. You don't need a mixer right away, but may want one later on.

Powered Mixer amps (stereo is best) with passive 12\" PA speakers are another good option.

PAS300 is not the greatest solution given its cost. You can get better for the same cost or lower.
Motion sound kb rig is an option but it depends on your power requirements and later options (limits too).

For the same cost as the PAS, you can get a pair of 212A's ( powered speakers) and a pair of 5.25\" nearfield monitors for recording purposes should you desire.

Other than that, 212A's (pair) simple mixer (8ch) for about the same as the PAS.

Just examples of what else you can find to deliver what you need.
On the budget side of things of course.

  • Good information. My needs aern't really that demanding. It has to be loud enough to play over drums. I also need 1 mic input and 3 stereo inputs (keyboard, gnx, and mp3/cd) Stereo is definitely a requirement.

I was looking at the motion sound keyboard because of the convenient all in one, same deal on the Yamaha PA. The behringer seems like major overkill. I really don't need 800 watts though it would give me room to expand. I just started playing again after a 5 year absence and hope to be playing small clubs/parties/events in the next 6-8 months. At home I have a \"man cave\" where I don't really need a lot of volume but I don't like practicing with NF monitors.

I think the best deal right now seems to be this

It seems to be a pretty good deal.
