Dunlop capo leaving stains/marks

I recently bought a Dunlop Capo and used it on my newest guitar. When I not use the capo I clamp it on the tip of my guitars head. Don’t do that! The black rubber strip soaks into the transparent lacquer, leaving stains/marks on the gloss finished maple head of my brand new Godin.
After trying several things (guitar polish, soap, car cleaner) to remove the stains I begin to worry it ruined my headstock permanently :-(

Any tips for removing the black crap are more than welcome!

  • Naptha is often recommended as a safe cleaner. The easiest way to get it is to buy lighter fluid.
  • Git'rs with laquer finishes also can't sit on most rubber- or foam-padded stands either. :?
  • Well I tried the lighter fluid (Zippo, now i have to start smoking too) but in this case it did not do the trick  but thanx for the tip anyway.

I managed to remove the stains by 95% using car-cleaner/polish, basically making the lacquer layer thinner so i do it really slow and careful. Cause i know the stain was there i can still see it, perhaps i'll give it a second polish this night.

But still its unbelievable stupid to sell a guitar tool that can harm your guitar-finish, why dont they use a rubber that doesn't mark? or warn you not to use it on light colored woods...
  • Answer is-3M perfect-it 3000 extra-cut rubbing compound :D its synthetic and won't stain the laquer 8) may require a mini pneumatic buffer to get perfect results .
