Take my computer -- PLEASE

OK guys...after the recent meltdown, I have TOTally reached the end of my leash with computers and music. I know a lot of you do very well with it, but it's been nothing but headaches and lost playing time for me.

SOOOO...I'm dismantling and parting out my WIN XP computer. The motherboard is fried, but the rest of the system is fine. So I have everything else available - a nice Intel P4 CPU, DDR400 RAM, SATA drives, a CD burner, Sapphilre video card, licensed copy of XP Pro, a nice Samsung digital monitor, yada.

If any of youse guys are looking to add to/upgrade/whatever your rig/s, I'm gonna part it out pretty cheap. It'll all go on ebay as soon as I have the time to list it all, so if you're interested, PM me asap.

  • Did you not have a surge protector or battery backup? How do you know nothing else isn't toasted? I personally don't generally buy used stuff if I know it came out of somthing thats been cooked. They have a tendency
to stop working somewhere down the road. It really only has to do with
Computers and not so much the music part anyway. No matter what you use a computer for you need to have power protection. Or was this something else?

    It was something else. :?
  • So you are obviously using another computer to post from..... Are you giving up on music and computers?

Well...I'm not giving up on computers - OR music - but I'm not going to do them together any more. I'll use my Toshiba notebook to run XEdit, and I have my trusty mac to do internet and other such stuff. But using a computer for music has been a dismal failure for me.
I might try Reaper or Audacity or some other really light-weight recording s/ware, but frankly I've had much better success with h/ware recording and I don't even bother with computer recording anymore. I spent so many hours trying to get PTP to run on a really hot-rodded, optimized system - with zero success - that I consider it a waste of playing time. :?
  • Well I really did not enjoy PTP either. I purchased SONAR Studio first and then upgraded to Producer. What a big difference. I have really never had any major issues with SONAR, just with Windows XP Media. I have had moments where I wanted to put my head through my monitor.

Have you thought about upgrading or even maybe Cubase or ACID Pro?
  • I gave some thought as to whether my problems were due to the PC/XP, or the recording s/ware I was using. I concluded that PTP just plain sux, despite the handful of guyz here who use it successfully.
But I didn't want to dole out the bux for a better s/ware package, realizing that if XP was even part of the problem things'd be the same and I'd be out all the dough I coulda used on long distance calls to Anee Hathaway inviting her to my hot tub.
  • I am one of those handful of guys who actually uses PTP successfully. I started using computers and music together way back with the Commodore 64.... We made midi music back then, not enough horsepower to actually record audio. Anyway, recording on the computer has many features over hardware recording, but I can feel your pain. Nothing wrong with hardware recorders. We actually use a mix of both in my band. Best wishes.
  • Well sorry Shredd you've come to this conclusion. Yes at times it is very nerveracking. Glad for you it wasn't a power meltdown. I think you
should take a week off on some nice warm beach and drink a few margauritas with some hot young cutie and refresh your head. PTP is fine if you just need a basic setup, but it's limitations come to surface real quick. Take a breather and think over.

 Yeah, I am...I'm even considering taking it to one of the local computer fixit guys and asking them to check and see exactly what's fried - the MB, my CPU, or whatever, and then decide from there if I want to replace whatever's toasted, or go ahead and part it out.
That said, I'd gladly forsake my computer, and perhaps even my Ibanez, to spend some time on a beach with a cutie and a margarita. 8)
  • It's usually cheaper to replace the board yourself. Even if that's not the problem, buying the other parts will still be cheaper.
  • For better or worse, it is cheaper to buy a new computer in many cases than it is to repair an out of warranty computer. If you don't know how to troubleshoot your own system, it probably is time to get rid of the old box and move on with your life. I believe the 'average' computer repair cost is now about the same price as a new computer. So, if you don't have warranty coverage, you are out of luck. If you can sell parts of your old system you are lucky. We have a garage full of old computers and parts from our business and it will cost us $$$ to dispose of the hardware. Better luck on your next computer(s). Take care.

    Shreddy,
I'm sorry to hear about you're confuser troubles Bro'. I too am one of the simpletons who are satisfied with the limited features of PTP. After optimizing my PC for audio, I had no problems.

I'm the giver of bad advice, because I'm pretty sure that I'm the guy that got you onto graphtech, and i understand that ended up being dismal for you.

Here is one piece of advice that I have to give (based on personal experience)...

No (I said No) piece of pussy is worth trading a well adjusted, well playing guitar for, supermodel or not!!!!!!!! Keep the Ibanez!!!

These are my thoughts...not yours

    Peace,

    Dobb.

P.S. Any brothers in the NE? I just obtained a work visa, and may be moving to the USA (Northern Mi...Traverse City) in a month or two...As a guy who was born here, and lived 30 some years here...Canada (Mostly Alberta)Sux...I'm bailing.

I'll take the snow and the mountains.

Easy to say for youse married guyz. I'm sure your wives get jiggy at least once or twice a year. If I had as much trouble gettg jiggy women as i do getting decent guitars, I'd agree with you...but things bein' as they are...it'd be a good trade. And a supermodel would be way worth it...
  • Confuser update-
It would appear that I'm going to acquire a new motherboard from Shuttle, at a cost of $104 + s/h.
Once the system is functional again, I'll load up the s/ware and decide if I even want the thing anymore, and if I don't at least I can sell it as a functional system instead of parts. I'm glad I don't have to explain this to a wifey. :?
  • Ilia,

    Yeah their Nice but...

Over $500,000.00 for a 1500sq ft house, thats so close to the neighbors that grass won't grow between the houses. Or maybe you want to live in the mountains...where the price doubles. Higher prices for everything, not to mention how screwed up health care really is.

Snow...you like snow? C'mon over...this morning its -36 degrees C, -45 with the wind...thats -49 F. I challenge you to do ANYTHING out in the snow and mountains.

    Shreddy,

Hope the new motherboard worx for ya :)

    Peace,

    Dobb.
  • By the point it gets to -30, it doesn't really matter if it's C or F. It was about that cold in Quebec the one year we went skiing. All I can say is, full-face masks and goggles  one of my friends got a NASTY frost bite where his ski mask came out from under the goggles. That thing was black.

I guess it's easier to talk about when you're vacationing for a week, not living there.

That's the truth, plus some. I live in a town where the housing is more expensive than San Francisco, the health care is a laugh, the prices of everything are astronomical, the winters have mornings that'rein the -20's F or even colder, and the summer is 10 weeks long.
If it weren't so amazingly beautiful here, I'd think there was something wrong with this place.
  • \"If it weren't so amazingly beautiful here, I'd think there was something wrong with this place.\"

    THERE IS!....(not enough Shredable chicks!)

....I would have moved as soon as I could walk!

    THERE IS!....(not enough Shredable chicks!)
....I would have moved as soon as I could walk!
Point well taken. There's a running \"joke\" around here that \"you don't lose your girlfriend, you lose your turn.\"

But at least I don't have to live in Cleveland or Atlanta or Houston (although I hear those towns have women...)
  • Ah yes me lad and once you've had a real woman,
    You'll never want another chick.
  • Good luck your new motherboard. Hope it works out for you.

As for the supermodels, I wonder if you have the wrong philosophy towards women. When I was in the Navy, there was a saying that \"I never had a 10 for the night, but I've had a 2 five times!\" The other saying I remember hearing was \"Go ugly early because you're going to go ugly eventually!\" There were, of course, some other bits of wisdom that I can't pass on the forum here. Point was, you should be able to drink enough beer to make any woman look like a supermodel! Best wishes.

I'm pretty sure the new m/board is going to solve all the problems...meanwhile, I'm going to put a decent sound card in it to see if that alleviates my recording problems any...watch for a thread/poll on that subject.
There's guys here on the forum that are generously donating recording software to my efforts, since PTP SUX so bad. I'm hoping I can get this working, so I can sound like Eno and dazzle you all with my recording prowess.

I realize that I wax endlessly about longing for my own personal Cameron Diaz or Elizabeth Hurley to appear, but frankly, I'd be thrilled to have a \"normal\" woman of solid character, warm heart, kind disposition, and good humor who likes me (LOVES me, even??), doesn't judge me, and thinks I'm a stellar lover. 8) If she's not a supermodel (and how many supermodels fit THAT description?!?), I'm fine with that. As long as she's not morbidly awful to look at, I'd be a lot happier about it than I am now...
  • hey im interested... lemme know what you want for the stuff and all that cryglory@gmail.com
  • Well, here in Sydney the winters are about 10 degrees..... Celsius!

However at the moment today looks to be 30 degrees and really high humidity. It's summer BTW
  • If your new M/B does not work out............

Just give you an idea of what is out there, I just 'built' a Dell PC with the following specs:

    -Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E4500 (2MB L2 Cache,2.20GHz,800 FSB)
-Windows VISTA or XP (you can choose).
-17 inch wide screen flat panel monitor.
    -1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz- 2DIMMs
    -250GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™
    -48X CDRW/DVD Combo Drive
-256MB ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO
    -Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio
-Dell 19 in 1 Media Card Reader
-Data/Fax Modem plus 802.11b/g wireless PCI card (I know, who uses modems anymore)
-Dell A525 30 Watt 2.1 Stereo Speakers with Subwoofer
-1Yr In-Home Service, Parts + Labor, 24x7 Phone Support (phone support in India).
-Included 3 GB DataSafe Online Backup for 1Yr
-It also gives you the option not to install all the sh*tty software that you end up unistalling anyway.

Anyway, it was $759. Which is a pretty good deal and Dell is a decent PC (IMO).

Good luck to you on your quest for a functioning PC and hot tub adventure with Anne Hathaway.
  • It would be great if your new motherboard plays nice with your recording software. The GNX4 is great in that you can record alot of good stuff right on the OBR or you can record to software and take advantage of many other options not typically available with hardware recording. I think if you got over the hump on software recording, you would really enjoy its many benefits. As far as PTP goes, it has always worked great for me. We recently got Sonar Producer 6 but none of us has had time to work with it yet. Of course, at $500, it does offer many advanced features that PTP does not offer. But it's really not fair to compare the programs because of the great difference in price. Also, before I used PTP, I had other software recording packages over the years that worked, or didn't, to some degree. So I can understand your frustration.

A good woman can really warm your heart. Supermodel or not, I hope you find your mate. I've been with my wife for 19+ years and she has stayed with me through good times and the bad times. Hope we have another 19+ years together.... Take care.

    I hope so too. Congratulations!

I'd really love to be able to use computer recording; with the capabilities for sound processing, and my ability to use the graphic/visual interface to accomplish what I want, I think I'd do great with it. I just can't get my system to play nice with it.
So I'm going to try some s/ware I've had \"donated\" to me, and see if it works any better than PTP, which I've given up on; I'm also going to fiddle with GarageBand...
