Crate Power Block Question

Hey all thought I would ask here before I try this & possibly do damage?
Here is the deal: I've upgraded my live setup to a Lopoline 212 Cab. This cab will be 4 ohms. I have a Eminnence mod 12 and a Swamp Thang wired parralel again for 4 ohms. So here is the deal When you unbridge the Power Block for stereo outs you get 2 4 ohm outputs. I don't have 2 cabs? My goal is not to run stereo. I just want to drive that 4 ohm cab with 1 of my 4 ohm outs.

Is this O.K. to do? Or must I terminate both outs at 4 ohms to use this mode of the Block? I'm hoping this is cool to do? Any thoughts or insites would be greatly appreciated.

  • so it's only 4 ohms if you run both outputs at the same time? if that's the case I would use 1 for your cab and just put a cable that's not plugged into anything into the second output.

    hope this helps
  • a cable not connected to anything is virtually the same, electrically, as a jack with nothing plugged into it, so that's not the answer.

Crate's website is sadly lacking on powerblock info, but since you get the 8-ohm config by bridging the two 4-ohm outs, I'd bet you can use just one of the 4-ohm outs with no issue.

Then again what do I know?

  • Hey Rawfish this is my bet as well. I realy don't think I going to burn anything up by only using the 1 4 ohm out & leaving the other open. I just thought I would ask to see if anyonw has done this or knows the answer before the smoke test next week.

    \"Smoke Test\". That's a good one.
FWIW, I power my bass rig with a Nady stereo amp, 'cuz my preamp has high n low outs, so I can power/balance seperately.
BUUUT...when I run the preamp one-channel (meaning not bi-amped) I put the signal either into the amp in bridged or parallel mode, or if I'm only using one cab, I simply run the signal into one side of the amp and let that side power the cab, with nothing going into the amp's second channel, or connected to the second channel's output.
Since the PB only has one input (right??) I'd bet that running a 4 ohm cab off one of the outputs and leaving the other unattached, as 'fish suggested, would work fine.
One thing that'll tell you is if find the load is to low, and you start clipping. That'd be part of the \"Smoke Test\".
  • It wont do anything unless you push the amp hard. The only thing it would do (if anything was wrong) would be to heat it up more.

That said, it is a stereo amp, so you are only using one amp. Therefore IMO it would be fine.
