 Hmm, this might take me a while to learn I think..... I've only just grasped the concept of a thumbpick!! Ol' Stevie seems to be taking this whole 'playing in modes' thing to a whole different tangent!
Elementary my dear watson Steve Vai is a one of a kind! Just as I will & do strive to be Me find my own style etc.. maybe in another 4 years I will be off square 1 with guitar!

Methinks you didn't watch the vid? It's hilarious. It's amazing how many think that this is serious....probably the same people that believed Spinal Tap to be real.
Fairnuff Mickster. So what if it is fake? I still say Steve is a one of a kind! The way he thinks & stuff he comes up with I mean hey I sure don't think like that or would come up with it BUT hey that's Steve Vai & to some is a geneus on a guitar. Me not exactly my style BUT I respect how good he is! 8)
I never thought Vai to be a great composer or a great improviser - in fact, I've hardly ever listened to any of his songs because I \"wanted to hear some Vai\". But his total command of the instrument leaves me in awe, plus the gestures and facial expressions are priceless.

What? Spinal Tap not real? Their album \"This Is Spinal Tap\" is a classic and I pull it off the shelf every now and then. Of course not all their albums were great. \"Intravenus de Milo, which was the group's seventh record and released in 1974, is still known to be the first album to ever reach the status of bronze, which a band can only attain if one million copies of an album are returned.\" (allmusic.com) Gotta love a band like that, real or NOT. Best wishes.
Technically....Vai is a great player..Just doesn't have a lot of melodic content, for my tastes though....I think a lot of his stuff is chops for chops sake..
Damn the melody!!! Full speed ahead!!!!

Any doubts about the ability/expression of Vai are usually extinguished after you see him live - I'm talking about his slower stuff heh, heh... I took my dad to see Vai the other year and that was enough to convert him! And I'm talking about a 66yr old jazz guitar freak!
Damn....I think that any future attempts at humor around here might be more successful if I stick to jokes of the 'Knock-Knock' variety :?
Good point Mickster. Well considering this is a very popular style of guitar playing (I hear it a lot at the local music shops ) maybe we should think of a name for this guitar style?
Lets see....... its sporadic, uses 'out there' modes, timing is variable.... hmm, this might take a bit of thought.
I don't think it's possible to understand Steve Vai without seeing him live.
His sound and technique is above and beyond anyone I've ever seen live.
Van Halen would be #2 LIVE, maybe I'm slow but I had no idea how fantastic his sound REALLy was.
Satriani #3 recorded or LIVE
I saw Rush live in a small hockey arena in East Grand Forks, Minnesota way back in 1979. They were great. I never saw a percussion setup like they had. Years later I learned how great Neil Peart was consider among his fellow drummers. He certainly blew us away and well as the whole band. A year later they came out with Permanent Waves and really hit it big. It was great to see a band on the rise like that. I can hardly believe that after 34 years they are still making music.
Most of the time us small towners get the bands that have already had their day in the sun. That night was truely an exception as we all got to see a rising band AND we knew it. So my heart's with Shredd on this one. Rush was a awesome live band when I saw them. Take care.

Me: trying to reach positive numbers.
The solo in this video - Vai should be drug tested, or perhaps put a stop on the check.
Hint: Read the comments below the video...
Mickster
(And Vai's no druggie....he doesn't even drink.....he's just nuts)

More my style here...
And for straight chops, that are melodic as well..
or this one...

You wouldn't get along with Vai. Too many modes.
If you want a rating compared to that song, technique-wise i would be 100
If only we could get those guys hooked up to a Marshall JCM800 and a crybaby...
All this post was meant to be funny?? I thought you ask me to compare myself to Steve Vai? Sorry my bad Mixster

\"Faecal Fusion\" is another possibility.....
