What to buy! What to buy!

I am in the market to exchange/update/throw away my existing RP7 workstation for one of the newer models from Digitech. I am a home musician and not gigging a lot but like the idea of the 8-track recorder, jam-along feature and downloadable patches. Having said that, I really don't which of the existing guitar workstations would best suit my needs. Do I really need to spend top dollar on one. What's difference between the GNX 2-3-4 and 3000 models and what is the absolute minumum I would need to pay for. Advice is absolutely appreciated.

BTW: Anyone need a hobbling along RP7?

GNX3000 has all the major functionality of GNX2, but also includes stereo XLR outputs and balancing on 1/4\" outputs. It does not have an on-board recorder, but it allows jam-a-long looping. GNX3 is the lowest-priced one you can get that has the recorder/looper and jam-a-long, but you'll have to hunt around for a SmartMedia card if you want somewhat extended recording time. GNX4 offers a lot with the CompactFlash card; more recording time, MP3 player, customizable drum patterns, additional preset storage, etc. It's as much for gigging as it is for studio work.

Nickel's worth of free advice? KEEP the RP7. I still have my RP3 and while it doesn't hold a candle to what my GNX4 will do, it has some KILLER sounds.
Put the RP7 on a shelf somewhere and in a year or two, pug it and and play with it.
  • Thanks for the links. The .pdf file with the feature comparison was the most helpful. So the GNX3K is can record so long as you're connected via USB to a computer according to their website. Again, most of what I do is in a home studio so that's actually pretty useful however according the .pdf file their is only 1 modeled drum kit.

btw: thanks for the note regarding the RP7. I've really enjoyed using it and I'm really on the fence regarding buying an upgraded workstation or a decent amplifier.

    fickle huh?

  • 8) I think the GNX4 has is a more versital piece of hardware. If you are not near a computer and all you have is your GNX4...you can still record. Its a musicians swiss army knife.
Me and my buddys used to like to take my GNX3 anywhere. and its perfect for that kinda on the fly record to smart card with the drum machine to capture an idea then plug it into an interface after you import the loops and expand your idea. Anyway the Gnx series really got me back into music it has such a nice layout and that creates a flow for recording ideas...I ramble  Just my 2Cents
  • Thanks,

That's a rather large chunk-o-change though? Wow thats a new set of pipes on my motorcycle. While you've all provided me excellent advice and help I still have a tough choice to make here.

    Thanks,
