Current forums software and maybe a update?

Well ive notice that the forum software you guys are useing is PHPBB2 and that the theme has been the same for EVER. Have you guys thought about updateing to PHPBB 3 RC7? or maybe a different type of software like SMF? or maybe just change the theme a little bit?

Ive been running PHPBB2 on my website for almost 3 years now, And i know from first hand expierence its verry hard to mod/update/control like you would like. I have just recently updated to PHPBB3RC7 and must say WOW the support and the features are amazing, The ability of subforums built right in is enough to say screw PHPBB2 and update!

The good thing about PHPBB3 is that you can update from 2 with out any problems, Simpley upload the PHPBB3 folder to your website and install it on a new mysql database. Install takes less then 5 minutes! After that go back to your install folder ( where you uploaded phpbb3 ) and run the conversion process. Conversion takes less then 3 minutes! once done you have phpbb3 installed with all your old user's/forums. It took me a tottal of around 20 minutes to install/convert/upload my forums and have them backonline.

The reason im posting this is in hopes that the site owner reads up on PHPBB3 and realizes how much more it has to offer then PHPBB2 and hopefully either upgrades to it since its free and takes almost no work at all... Or atleast does a theme update for there current software.

We did an update sometime ago, to whatever version this is, which fixed some bugs. Haven't had much problems moderating, or terribly unsolvable issues, so haven't considered an upgrade since.

Last time we looked into this, SMF uses MySQL, and that didn't jive with the IT guys at Digitech, or something.

Thanks for the suggestion, we'll do some research on the newer versions. I know back before auto-registration mod was installed there were some other suggestions about reporting spam by users, so perhaps there are some new features that will be useful.

Yes thats one of the reason's i updated to PHPBB3 is because of the spambots and spam i was getting, With PHPBB3 you get alot of neat features and tools. One of the most exciteing ones is the updated security.

Since installing PHPBB3 i havent had 1 bot sign up on the forums, It lets you set it so the user has to go to there email and click a link to activate there account witch takes alot of hassle out of admins needing to activate the account.

Yes SMF use MySQL but so does PHPBB 2 and 3 so i dont see why Digitech would have a problem with PHPBB3 and SMF, Almost anything that is installed on your webserver use's MySQL, Useing MySQL is nothing really.. PHPBB and SMF both do all the edits/uploads to MySQL themselfs anyways. The only real thing you need to do is input the username and password and the name of the database your useing.

If anything you guys should atleast install PHPBB3 to another directory and test it out and see what all it has to offer because it is truely amazing and blows 2 out of the park. Thanks for reading my post and i hope digitech and you guys decide to upgrade to PHPBB3

*Nice user control panel, Lets you set alot more cool stuff and information in your contorl panel
