Buying a guitar, decisions.

So I think I've settled on a BC Rich Warlock. I play metal/blues riffs mainly, all kinds of stuff but mainly metal and blues. The Warlock just felt the best to play and had a great tone, but I have come to realize I need to get Seymour Duncan pickups installed. Every guitar I tried out, Seymour Duncan pickups just blew me away, they sounded the best by far. Any reasons not to do this? I like the BC Rich pickups, but I just have my heart set on the Duncan pickups sound.

I should note that I tried all the guitars playing through a bunch of different patches on headphones through my GNX3000, I based my tone decision on this. I didn't really care about the look of my guitar, it was just what felt right so BC Rich won for me personally in that note. There's no chance of changing my mind on this part as that style just felt the best.

Soundwise: Ibanez makes a number of models geared toward hard-edged sound. Jackson also, but pricier. And there's TONS of lines out there, play as many as you can. Some might surprise you.
I put a pair of D/M PAF Pro's in my Ibanez recently, they sound incredible. Big u/grade.
Bottom line is go for what feels good to play, as long as it sounds like what you're after. And you can always change your pups...

And of course, remember to have your wife's hott single friend call me. 8)
  • I've heard good things about the Warlock. Never had one myself, just heard good things. Also depends on the Warlock model, I guess. My brother-in-law played guitar with someone who only played Warlocks. Really nice guitars but he bought the more expensive models. I guess you get what you pay for in the end.

I've only ever once replaced my pickups in a guitar. The guitar was 40+ years old and the pickups were not cutting it anymore. I got a DeMarzio which sounds really good. One of those dual sound pickups. I am surprised that the Warlock stock pickups are not up to your standards, but sound is subjective and you might as well get what you want. I'd suggest keeping the original Warlock pickups in case your model becomes a collector's item.

For myself, I grew up with Jimmy Page posters so it was, and still is, Les Paul guitars for me. Can't afford the Gibson, but got myself a nice Epiphone Les Paul Custom. Anyway, rock hard on your Warlock. Take care.
  • A friend of mine has a warlock and thinks its ok, not sure which model but it cost him a bit of dough. I think he was more into the shape than anything. Over the years I've ended up with a collection of guitars (about 8 to be exact - I haven't the heart to part with any of em   ) but the last couple of years I've been hooked on ESP's. I use a Horizon NT-II and I've just had a Custom Shop Horizon delivered - an absolute sweetheart but it nearly got me divorced...chicks don't understand these things!

Anyhows, have you tried any ESP Ltd's? Those Ltd's are awsome for the price! Great finish, great sound and feel. Seriously, as much as I like my custom shop I play some Ltd's and wonder why I spent the shiteload extra money for it and the millenium it took to arrive! And you can get em with Seymours.

Speaking of which, I'm a big Duncan fan. I switched to them after my wolfgang pickups cacked themselves for the third time a few years ago. Has anyone else had this problem?? I particularly like the 59/JB combo in my ESP's - from memory SD has a tone page on their site where you can hear all their pickups - very handy.
I'll stop now...I'm ranting! Hope this helps. 8)

My nephew got a ESP Ltd guitar because it was all black and looked cool. It has the Floyd Rose locking tremelo system. It plays great. The sound, however, is best with heavy metal distortion or other heavy effects. Think Kirk Hammet from Metallica and that is the sound his guitar wants. I would not use that guitar for most music I play - Classic Rock. By itself, it sounds thin and weak when compared to my Les Paul or even my Strat. It's a great guitar, but it definitely has its particular sound preference. I don't remember what pickups came stock on that guitar. So the sound was specialized but the guitar is great. Take care.
