What's the Difference between the GNX3000 and for GNX4?

Hey folks -
new member, first time poster
I have a question that I would imagine has been covered many times here and I did a search but couldn't find any help.
I am thinking of going DigiTech MFX mostly because of the real whammy and other pitch effects and the DNA things sounds like it should do something other than just be marketing buzz word. I have just spent the past 3 hours on the DT site and PDFs.
I would like to know in a nutshell, if possible, what is the difference between the 3000 and the GNX4 besides price? I have gone over the DigiTech website pages relative to each unit, but I find myself overwhelmed to form an answer myself
Also does the channel 1 channel 2 and morphing come close to the new X3(L)'s dual amp feature.
I am a Line6 XT Live user for the past 3+ years and a Variax pundit. I tried a X3 out and took it back because it seemed not ready to be on the shelves yet; drivers, USB, Editor, bugs, etc.

I sort of just resent Line6's marketing for the past 3 months because I feel down right brain washed - man... I have never desired something so much - way out of control -like dreaming of a red wagon for Christmas when I was a kid - ruminating to the max. Maybe it is just me???

I had checked out the reviews at thestompbox.net but now I am thinking of trying something different. Let me know if there are rumors about new things on the horizon so I don't buy something and 3 months later find I'm stuck with old gen if you have heard anything, please.

thanks in advance guys
Hope you guys don't mind Line6er nosing around here.

I read your review over at L6 Kelpack so I know you have tried it out. You would have known me in the past over there as Ram Dass now Hey_Joe.

  • GNX4000???

    Did I miss something?
  • No, I got confused -meant to write GNX4.
The GNX4 cost more than the GNX3000 so I thought because of the price difference it was maybe better but I thought the 3000 came out after it and would be more advanced.
My mistake. no wonder nobody answered.
  • I own the GNX4, and could not be happier with it. It is one of my favorite pieces of gear.
  • The GNX3000 is the latest and gratest of the \"modeling pedals\". The GNX4 is a GNX3 that has a USB port and uses compact flash memory instead of smart media which is dead.

I own both a GNX3 and a GNX4. Both are great pedals and I love playig with them. But the USB makes the GNX4 worth the price since you don't need a high end sound to record to your computer with it.

The GNX 3000, from what I have heard, has better amp modeling than the GNX4 (has the Audio DNA2 instead of Audio DNA) but lacks the onboard recorder.

For me the GNX3000 wouldn't cut it. With my GNX4 I can load MP3's on the memory card and play them back. I also have the Jam Man functions. Both are very important to me because I give guitar lessons and use both with my students nightly.

  • thanks for the replys guys.
    So -
    smart media which is dead
    = obsolete technology?
Let me get this straight...as I was reading Harmony Central reviews the GNX4 came out first and the GNX3000 later? and as KILLiN said a newer chip. Seems they both have recorders and ProTracks, jamalong , drum machines etc... so why the price difference of $499 to $349? What's the difference beyond what you mentioned - new processor and new algos?? Usually newer costs more.

    Secondly:
Is the ability to have chan 1 and chan 2 and morphing the same as having dual amps? Have you paid any notice to Line6's new X3? If that name is blasphemes around here - sorry.
I just remember Kewlpack's review or maybe it was in the shootout... about his preference of the GNX over the XTL - so his opinion sticks with me as valuable.

He's saying GNX4 uses CF, not SmartMedia.

The GNX3000 does not have a built in recorder. The GNX4 does.

The \"Warp\" blends the 2 amps together, you can't have a stereo spread, or 2 separate amps going at once, etc.
  • Hey Joe!

If you don't need the built-in recorder, go for the GNX 3000.

IMO, the amps sound more realistic than the previous GNX series MFX, there are more amps/cabinets models, and you have almost every Fx you need inside this black box.

Give it a try, you won't regret it.

And yes, you can switch between two amps on a preset, Chan 1 and Chan 2, but you can't split them through L and R outs as on the GT8 or X3, besides that it has a powerful option the others don't have as far as I know, the WARP function, to blend the two amps you have in a preset and come with a totally new custom amp.
  • Well the GNX3000 is \"2996\" better, isn't it...

Yea. That is what I am saying... LOL

Don't confuse the GNX3 and the GNX3000. They are two differnet beasts. With the 3000 you dont have any recording functions without the computer. This includes the Jam Man functions, since it uses the recorder.

But the 3000 should sound better than the GNX4 or GNX3 since it has the newer chipset.

I know this is a bit confusing, but anyone of these pedals (GNX3, GNX4, GNX3000) are going to give you options you only dreamed of before. For me personally, I use the onboard recorder way too often to get a GNX3000. Been patiently waiting for the GNX5 (there is no such thing) to hit the market... LOL

It's all about what \"you\" are looking for, and what meets \"your\" needs.

  • What he said. The 3/4 vs. 3K is largely about recording vs. live use.
Meself, I really like the OBR, and if I was playing live, I'd probably still use the '4, since the 3K isn't so much better that I'd use it instead. And i like looping ability.
'Course, it really comes down to what the groupies dig...I'd play a Hello Kitty pseudostrat if it'd get the hott ones hott for me.
  • You can't beat the 4 for playing mp3's and backing tracks in a live setup, if you aren't a full band, or if you want to throw in some sound clips from movies to make the audience laugh.....
