GNX for effects only

I'm looking at using the GNX (3k in my case) in the series fx loop of an all-tube amp. Obviously for mod effects only. My question is (knowing that more trial and error will probably be needed), is there an ideal setting for effect level, patch level, and GNX output level when bypassing amp/cab modeling? I'm especially interested in GNX output - should it be up high and fx send level on the amp turned down, or the opposite??

Needless to say, I'm having a hard time getting the GNX to sound as good in the loop as a stand-alone chorus and delay stomp. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

thanks!!

  • Stating the obvious for sure, but be sure all your amp and cab modeling is set to Direct.
And be sure your input and output, level and gain settings are such that you don't add any extra overdrive to your signal. Let the amp do it.
  • Keep the output of the gnx the same as what stompboxes would do. That is, no additional gain. Also, try speaker comp being off.
  • Thanks for the replies gents! Yep, I have both channels set to bypass, EQ disabled, speaker comp off - all to try and make it as transparent as possible. I tried some more experimenting last night, and with patch volume at noon, effect levels between 40-50%, and GNX output about half way up, I got chorus and reverb to sound decent, but delay still sounds funky no matter what choice I use . Either I'm doing something wrong, or the delay features on the GNX just aren't as good as a Boss DD6. :?
  • Just curious...
Are you using footswitch 2 on/off stompbox?
    footswitch 3 on/off chorus/mod effect?
    footswitch 4 on/off delay effect?
  • As in, am I using it in stompbox mode?? Yes
  • Put the output mode of the gnx4 in mono... you probably have already done that though...
  • Sorry, probably should have been more specific, but it's a GNX3000. And yes, I have it on Mono all. Thanks for the feedback 8)
  • i do this now with my gnx3 feeding the gnx4. i just set it to stompbox mode, and set the amp & cab to direct. you can still tune the cab in direct mode too rofl.

then just run all the fx you want. im a big fan of layered delay & chorus. so i run an sf-10 flanger into a dd 50, then into the gnx3, then into the gnx4 then to the mixer.
  • Holy Cow!! Then what do you do when your head explodes  . Just kidding - but that's a lot of effects man  .

I was just fooling around with this again, and I was unpleasantly surprised to hear that latency is every bit as bad when amp, cabs and eq are bypassed  . I'm really starting to think the 3k isn't going to be the right fx only solution for me. I wanted it to work because I already have it (duh) and wouldn't have to buy anything else. :?

I saw that right away in your first post.

I have the GNX4 and have no idea what the GNX3000 is like. I figured for that reason I couldn't be any help.
I have tried my GNX4 stompbox only, and although I get them to work fine enough, I am not impressed with them. My analog boxes are better. It could be I am not using it right as well...but like you, I've tried everything, and even the plain obvious. :? mutter..mutter

I've really come off the Digitech nipple a lot over the last year, and mainly just play through my Carvin Belair run through a Crate 4x10 closed back cabinet. I get hungry for lots of effects, like going without a cheese hamburger for a long time..., and have to plug in my GNX4. It is easier since I have several patches set up I like. I still have all my stompboxes, for when I really want to spend the day tweaking. :?

not related.... :P SHREDD...I have avvy envy. How did you get sooo big?
  • I/O...I thought you played thru an Atomic?

AND, YEAH...why does Shredd get the large avatar?
  • I/O...I thought you played thru an Atomic?

Hehehe  . I do - 2 of them actually 8) . I decided to try the traditional tube amp route for a bit. Haven't decided yet if I'm going to keep the Atomics to have a modeler rig as well. I'll probably end up selling the Atomics. I can probably afford to keep them, but my music room is getting to where you can barely walk through without stubbing your toe on something
  • I'm thinking about buying one, the 2x12...so if you do sell one PM me (I have CASH and I can drive down & pick it up)
  • I/O
I would gladly relieve you of one of those atomics :D if you do feel the need to...lets say REAMP !!

  • I thought of a way to get it sounding good thru your tube amp:
    Record some totally dry guitar
Play it back through your analog stompbox and record the output
Do the same for your gnx4
Tweak the gnx4 until its output sounds like the stompbox
    Away you go! 8)
