Attention Tech Weenies!!!

I need a little techno-help...I've been reading the unit's manual and experimenting a lot, but I haven't quite nailed it yet.

I have a dbx 266XL gate/limiter/compressor, that I got for my bass rig. I'm running the bass into a BBE preamp into the 266, then to amp and cab.

The problem is that I'm getting that wobbly \"chatter\" on certain notes, especially low end. It happens when the compressor unit is trying to alter the signal, just a teeny bit; it somehow is making the note sort of wobble. When it's fully muting the signal or doing more substantial compression, you don't hear it.

There's a section in the compressor chapter of the manual that talks about how improper compressor use can cause this chatter, but I haven't been able to dial it out, although I've tried dozens of combinations of compression amounts, thresholds, attack n release, etc etc. It only goes away completely if I bypass the unit's function.

Any of youse guyz with sound gear experience wanna take this on?

  • Hey, This might be due to the gate being on the edge of its threshold. Try turning the gate down/off.
  • Try to dial it out with the Expander/Ratio control
  • compressor settings...
    * Threshold set so only the peaks are compressed (around 0dB)
    * Ratio set for 4:1
    * Knee set for Hard
    * Peak/RMS set for Peak
    * Attack set around 9 o'clock
    * Release set around 10 o'clock
  • hey 'tou...thanks - but I don't think my 266xl (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/dbx-266XL-CompressorGate?sku=183515) has a peak/RMS setting...but I'm going to try your other numbers, and the other guyz', and see if I can clear this noise up...
  • Hey guyz - thanks for the input. I did some playing tonite with the purpose of sorting out this problem. I wrote down all the suggestions you all made, and ultimately the problem went away, after using a combination of these suggestions and lots of knob twiddling. But the bottom line is it seems to be working fine. Not a moment too soon, just as i was beginning to think a gate/compressor was more hassle than it's worth. But now I have great sound and lots of pretty led's, which we all know chix dig... :roll:

    especially if they flash in time with the music, in all sorts of colours. In fact, they might be so nice that they comment on them rather than your playing! :wink:
  • Long as yer belly doesn't hang over the top of the axe...you might have a shot. 8) :?

    Just believe YOU are the foundation to the music...attitude is necessary for good bass...slap that beitch around.
    Make 'er bark like a dog. :P Kik out a few of them stinkin' 15\" speakers too while yer at it. :evil:

    Heehee...ya, the pretty led's are all responding to the playing, so it looks very impressive. Very few women I know are up on anything to do with music, but they all like shiny pretty things. Maybe I should tape a couple to my forehead. :lol:
    plus - 'tou's got a point. My favorite thing about playing bass is that, unless you're Jaco or Geddy Lee, you're essentially part of the rythm section, which is usually the driving force behind songs. When you get that groove going, it's really fun.

    Now if I could just find a way to rationalize that yummy Laney stack I saw the next state over...4x10 + 1x15, used but looks nice, asking $600 plus tax :shock:. What's a good deal???
