Help! Non responsive Record mode

Help! My GNX4 will not work in Record mode! I put the box into Record mode (red button) both with the panel button and with the footswitches, but the recording function won't turn on (by pushing the \"Record\" button all the way on the left of the box in the recording panel).

I tried removing and reinserting the compact flash disk, and another new unused flash disk, and the GNX4 didn't respond to those in any way. I used a compact flash reader to check the files on the CF I have used in the past on the GNX4 and the files and mp3s I put on it do show up as present. Maybe the port where the GNX4 is supposed to read the CF is not working? It didn't respond in any way to having a never-used CF inserted into it.

Also (both with the old CF and the new one) none of the 'track' buttons 1-8 in the record panel will light up when I push their buttons. I can get the Shift button to engage and that allows me to turn on and off some of the bottom buttons (CF 1/2, etc.).

The only 'record' button that gives any response is the Play button: when I push that one the GNX4 plays a preprogrammed mp3 tune that was in it when the machine was purchased. But I can't get any other files to play (and of course I can't record anything).

If anyone has suggestions for how I might get this GNX4 back to recording work, please let me know. I have recorded succesfully with the GNX4 in the past. I even mixed some tracks on it, and uploaded mp3s into it. But those functions all seem entirely inaccessible now.

Thanks for your time and help!

  • What the song panel shows whether in record mode or not is a bunch of horizontal lines like hyphens:

(not like \"Song 01\" or something similar which is what used to appear).

The meters that show levels when recording do register that sound is being picked up somewhere: the levels go up and into red when I play guitar. But no recording is possible.

    I think the GNX4 needs a doctor!

  • If its under warranty, send it in.
  • If the recorder shows ---- in the display after a card is inserted, your card reader probably has a bent pin or is defective
  • I got my GNX4 repaired at an authorized dealer (AmericanTV) and it's working fine now. There were some broken pins in the card reader insert which needed to be repaired. While I had it \"in the shop\" I also had them look at two of the volume control knobs (one for the 1/4-inch guitar output and the other for the mic volume). Both needed replacing as I had thought.

The total bill for the repairs was about $150, and it took about two weeks to get it back. The cost was not so expensive as a music -equipment repair expense, but considering the GNX4 cost about $500 I wonder what I'll do if it needs repairs again in the future.

BTW the \"reset\" function in the XEdit software is FANTASTIC!! I backed up all the presets I had downloaded and those I had created myself before I took the unit in for repair. When I got it back it had been factory reset. But USB-ing it to my PC and launching the reset file brought everything back the way it was prior to the repairs.
