Backing up all the User presets at once?

Is it possible to back up all the User presets at once, like to the compact flash? By this I mean saving all the presets I've created or downloaded from the web, all at the same time instead of saving them to the card one at a time using the \"SAVE\" button on the GNX4 control panel.

I might need to do a factory reset to my GNX4 and wanted to back up the presets I have in place. I connected the GNX4 to my computer and then in X-Edit I opened the User library, and chose Device/Backup. This created a .g4a file.

Does this file have the user presets on it? If so how do I access those? I tried opening that file through X-Edit and it just gives an error message (\"Document file type is not recognized\"). Opening it through Notepad or text yields garbled fonts and symbols.

Thanks for your help!

  • You can either copy all the *.g4p files from the CF to your puter and replace them later; or you can use XEdit's backup/restore function.

I think I did use the backup function, I'm just not sure how to use the resulting file that was created. Can you explain how I could use the .g4a file that was created to 'get back' the presets I've created if I do a factory reset on the GNX4?

    Thanks again!

  • I don't have an XEdit puter in front of me, but I'm pretty sure the \"restore\" command to restore the backup file (*.g4a) to the GNX from the puter is in the same menu as the 'backup\" command.
As far as WHAT it backs up - I'm pretty sure it's the entire unit, Factory/user/card. But I won't bet my life on it; use XEdit's help file, it should say. Or ask someone who's smart.
  • Yes the .g4a file has all your user presets in it. How else would it restore *all* back to the time when you made that file?

I think you want to make the .g4a file, and then extract each and every single preset from that, and put them into a folder on your computer if im not mistaken. I don't think thats possible but I think I understand what your getting at by doing this: a huge time saving technique.

As for now, all I can think of (unfortunatly), is to open each preset in X-Edit that you want the .g4p file for, and save, not store, to your computer. Yes. Each and every one.

I think what your doing is pointless. Hence the technique that is given to you to do it. I might be wrong tho. You don't need every single preset file thats already on your GNX. If you do, then back it up andf restore it when you change things wayy too much and liked it more at the time you last restored it.

I could be totally misunderstanding the question here, but I think not.
  • I did do a factory reset on the GNX4 yesterday. Then I hooked it up to my computer by usb cable and chose the \"restore\" function. It worked fine in reinstalling all the presets I had previously installed in the User bank.

I had backed those presets up a few days before, and just in case I had misunderstood the process, I also went through and saved about 20 presets individually. But the restore function did it all at once so I didn't need the individually saved ones.

    Thanks for everyone's input!

Now that I've done this I have to try to figure out why, even after the factory reset, the GNX4 doesn't seem to go into record mode anymore, or even recognize the compact disk in the reader. I've also tried new, different disks, and the GNX4 doesn't even ask about formatting the new one. See my next question post in this discussion forum for more on this problem.
