2nd Draft(Still Rough) Metal Tune

Ok I'm looking for more suggestions on mixing. Sunday I finally got some time to do a HASTY re-recording of the rhythm tracks on this. I did a few things different. I tried to tweak the patches up from a little to get better definition between the tracks, then used alot more panning. Then I discovered the track analyser and tried to eq the tracks a little to focus on specific frequencies to try to get more definition too. I used the compressor on the final mix. My ears suck so tell me if you even think it is better that the last one or not. --By the way has anyone tried a new cakewalk product called Boost 11? It looks like a great tool for this sort of track but I want to see if anyone has any experience with it first.

The track is here:

  • Hey, awesome track, any chance you could tab it in power tab? This is the sort of track that keeps me pumped about metal.

I've only listened to the track whilst at work on my head phones but I will give my $0.02.
    None guitar stuff:
One thing that throws me off a little is the hats sound like they are panned centre. Also the snare is very faint. The kick sounds like slapped meat which I like.
    Guitar stuff:
The solos kick ars. I'd love to be able to play like that!
The track sounds like a guitarist's mix: ie the guitars are well up front with the kick audible enough to keep time. The guitars have a very strong jin-jin sound so I am guessing the metal zone pedal is getting a work out, giving the track an early nineties feel. I would suggest taming the bottom end and consider rolling back the gain on the stomp box and let the amp have more of an influence on the tone. Perhaps check out the \"brutal metal\" patch or the \"Nemesis - arch enemy\" patch available on the community site.

    I'll shut up now.
  • Thanks for the positive input. As far as the drums, I have not done any panning yet- that would be the next step. Can you pan using the midi and the GNX4 drum machine or do I have to break everything out to seperate tracks and mix the wav files? I had considered panning kicks left and right on the 16th note parts but I don't know how that would sound. Has anyone tried that before? As for the guitar, I don't think I used any stompbox models on any of the Rhythm tracks. I think that sound comes just from how I have it EQ'd out. I used variations of the Bogner XTC model from MFX for the Rhythm. For the leads I used Mar. JCM 900 and JCM 800 models for the harmonized parts towards the begining and I think an Engl model for the solo in the middle. I could try some more low end compression on the guitars, particularly on the faster rhythm. That might do the trick to some extent. I think I EQd to much high end in one of the rhythm tracks - so that's where that fizzy sound comes from. If I can ever finish lyrics for it and attempt to sing, that will change the whole mix too (with my voice it will probably just destroy the track).

Yo great guitars! Less Gain on the Guitars Will help your mix A Lot. when you try to mix trebil on the guitars, and they have high gain it will make them sound fuzzy. Less is more! Put the drums more out front too. Experiment withthe balance between the two. also when recording make sure it is at a high level, this will decrease a muddy sound. I love the playing on the track. Keep metal alive! I'm also the idiot who posted the songs unleashed and weeds, you can check them out and critic me back if you want.
  • Not sure I like this one better or the first? I think this one sounds like it has more highs? I kind of liked the deeper chunk chunk sound for this style? Anyhow it's a matter of taste probably? Both sound good & great Job Michael!! As far as Drums I think for EQ & Panning you need to Run Cal Split notes to Tracks Convert to waves Then Eq & Pan Mix Bounce back to the whole drum track? At Least that's what I do. I also don't think PTP does that if that's what you use? I use Sonar 5 I can Run Cal in it 8)
