Remote recording with the GNX-4

I have recorded audio & midi tracks into a ProTracks project file. Now, I would like to dump the audio tracks onto GNX-4, take it to a singer’s house with a mic, record a vocal track in sync with the audio, bring it back home, dump the vocal track into the same project for editing. Can I do this and how? :?:

  • You MAY be able to do it if you follow the naming convention of the gnx4 to the letter. However, you may NOT be able to do it (simply) as the gnx4 saves a data file with every song.

If this is the case, you will have to record each track onto the gnx4. I am not fully sure on this as I have not done this previously. I'm sure someone with more experience will be able to help you here.
  • Couple ways to do this:

1- Render audio and midi tracks and export as wav to your PC. Copy the wav file to the CF card in the song folder. The song data is only needed to list the time track and name of song. No biggie there. The wav files can still be exported.

2- Simpler method- Connect line output of PC to GNX4 line in. Select a New Song from GNX4 to be recorded on the CF card. Arm tracks of GNX4 for recording the line in (set line in to DRY). This will record the actual playback of the Pro Tracks project into a Stereo wav. Be sure all your mixing and pans are complete in your project. Once you have the stereo wav in that song on the GNX4 and stored on the CF card, add your vocal tracks.

Import the tracks into Protracks project or a new Protracks project.

Press CF Storage button> Select FILE> Import audio> navigate to CF card> GNX4 Song folder and highlight tracks for import. This will add the mixed tracks and vocal tracks to your Protracks project. Then you can mix, edit and render to mp3, wav etc.
  • Thank you for your responses. I was able to record into the GNX-4 directly from the PC by manually pushing the record button. However, I am concerned that once I record the vocal onto the GNX, then balance it back to ProTracks, that the syncronization may not be precise. Is there a way to have \"Record\" on the GNX triggered by the input signal from ProTracks? Will that insure that I am in sync when I dump back into ProTracks?

I really appreciate your help, Ron
  • Since the recorded band tracks are going to the GNX4 recorder and the vocals will be recorded along with those tracks no problems syncing up.

Once you import the tracks back to Protracks for edits, the wav's will be just like the CF recording. The only change you can have to vocal tracks is if they were actually off sync from the start.

You can be precise in moving the tracks in the track pane and set a cue position wherever you want. If you are not sure, import the GNX4 CF card Song tracks into a new Protracks Project for edits if you are concerned about adding the tracks to an existing one.
