So, do I sell my amp?

I'm kindof thinking about a GNX4, and am looking for some ideas.

I play guitar and sing in a classic rock band. I play an Epiphone Lucille through a Peavey Classic 50 410 amp, retubed with some very nice JJ's. We then mic the amp through our PA. This all works reasonably well.

But I am also putting together an acoustic duet thing...my wife on flute, me on guitar and vocals. I started thinking about a drum machine/back track player and came across the GNX4. The more I looked at it, I'm not sure its a very good fit for that (the whole MP3 looping thing, and lack of MIDI sync seems like its not what we want).

But then I started wondering if it would make sense to dump my amp and replace it with something like the GNX4. If nothing else, I'd really like to eliminate hauling it around from gig to gig. Total PITA. I also like the idea of getting some more versatility of tone.

But here's my big worry (and don't be offended, Digitech fans): I've only had one Digitech product in the past (Vocal 300) and I'd consider it a 'toy', not a 'tool'. Is the GNX4 really a serious, pro-grade tool? Part of me thinks it is a hobby box for guys to play with in their basements, but that its not really made for serious stage work.

Last...all I would really want is the amp modeling. All the percussion, looping, recording, etc is not necessary. What should I be looking at?

Any thoughts?

  • Well...I - and most of us here - would probably encourage you to go GNX. It's an awesome tool, and as it resides at the top of the D/T line, it's hardly a toy. The amp modeling is great, the overall sound quality is great, the effects are pretty great too. And if you go the GNX3/4 route, you get a great multi-track looper/recorder too.
How much of all those functions is important to you is your own decision. You sound like you don't need the recorder so much, yet you go both ways on whether you'd need/want the drum machine.
If you want to use the unit for modeling AND drum track/backup tracks, I'd suggest going with the GNX4. Better drum section than the '3, plays MIDI files. And you can put MP3's on it to play for backup.
If you really truly don't want percussion, a recorder, or effects - and ONLY amp/cab modeling - you may wanna save a pile o' bux and go with the GNX 1 or 2. I don't know much about either - never had em - but lots of others here do, and you can read/search the posts, or DT's website.
As far as whether you could completely replace your amp with a GNX - I'd say probably yes, unless you're a serious tone snob and only a real amp will do. But don't forget that the GNX's model tons of different amps, are totally tweakable (MUCH more so than a real amp) and have full range tone response, whereas a git'r amp only responds up to 10-12K, where the git'r lives. You need more full range sound if you're going to have drum trax or backup music.
    So..there's my $0.02...guys?
  • The GNX4 will work very well as a drum machine/backing track player, as well as give you access to an infinite range of amp modeling. The key to using it as a backing track player is to prepare your tracks as mp3's and add a few second of silence at the end of each mp3. This gives you time to hit the stop switch before the mp3 loops and starts to replay. If you need drum tracks only, you can prepare midi files for the drum tracks and use those. Since you apparenlty already have a PA, you would not need to haul the Peavey amp. You could run the GNX4 directly into the PA. As far as whether it is pro-level gear, I would say its designed as well as any other floor board out there. The CF card slot, when a card is inserted, needs to be protected from damage during transport. There are cases that will hold a GNX4 and keep it safe. I don't know of any product other than the GNX3 or 4 that gives you a way to play back accompaniment files and provide a good number of amp models.
  • Considering Jeniffer Batten uses the gnx4, I would definitely class it as pro level.
The problem with the gnx2 etc is that it does not have the output options like the gnx4.
You may say now that you have no need for the recording function, like i did when i bought it, but when I began to use it for solo practise, I've never looked back.
  • Omaha,

I'm sorry. I suffer GAS. (gear acquisition syndrome)
    I have a GNX4, a couple amps, and a pair of Behringer B-2031A.
    I don't need another amp.
That is what I tell myself over and over each day now.
I'm falling apart. I WANT YOUR AMP...
Yesterday was especially hard on me. I read this post 30 times
to make sure no one else bought your amp. :?

(Do Not sell to me...Do Not sell to me !!!)

PLEASE SELL ME YOUR AMP. (NO... PLEASE DON'T)

I assure you everyone here who has read your post, entertained the idea
of buying your amp, some more than others.
We are really a GAS support group, disguised as a Digitech message board. :?
  • If you're not looking for much more than amp models, consider the GNX3000. It doesn't have any of the CompactFlash card functionality, and is cheaper.
  • Tell ya what 'tou...you can buy my Peavey Classic 130 (single 12\" Scorpion) to ease your G/A/S. I don't hardly ever play out, so I never use it. It's mint. Or you can trade me a nice bass for it, or perhaps one of those gorgeous, young, adoring Russian women... :D
  • :D Thanks...great amp!

  • I use the GNX4 live, but it took me a while to make it work....first it sounds better through powered monitors,... then you need to tweak your patches for live gigs...I have it set up so that there is a clean or semi clean patch next to a dirty lead patch....sometimes I use the pedal to warp from a Martin acoustic to a Marshal JCM800 lead tone, works really well....typically I set up a really clean slightly chorused SRV rhythm sound, and then a ripping but creamy blackface overdriven sound for solos right next to it...I have the Marshal JCM800 right next to the \"talk box\" for \"Rocky Mountain Way\",, that really gets a reaction from the crowd....I downloaded a patch called \"Hammond-Cheez\" that sounds like a keyboard/flute tone for intro to \"Can't You See\", then the blackface right next to it for the solos and the Martin next to that for the break...the tones are as close to a high end amp as your going to get for the price...I played it next to a Mesa Duel Rectifier a buddy has and you couldn't tell which was which....I actually only use about 10 different patches out of the 80, but they are tweaked to approximate those songs...I also use the MP3 player for funny sound effects....(Bugs Bunny quotes, whistles for pretty chicks, crickets for songs that didn't go over, Jeapardy music for when a band member is wasting too much time between songs, 3 Stooges bits....)
  • I like using the crickets and some beavis and butthead remarks on mp3's when our singer says stupid things. First time we did the crickets he was mad!! once he saw the fun in it things got better. For stage contests and sports trivia we use Price is right, jeopardy, and Millionaire clips.. Final Answer!!

    OK....STOP...YOWSA!!!

That is a SERIOUS gas. Making fun of the crowd when a song bombs (with crickets)...the jeopardy thing...FUNNY!!!
  • If the other guy breaks a string, I play the \"Mission Impossible\" theme...if some audience member requests a song we don't know or one thats a universe away from our style (Madona....) I play the \"retarded vulture\" from Bugs Bunny---\"NOPE, NOPE, NOPE, NOPE\".....if someone is acting a little \"wierd\" I play the \"Psycho shower scene\" music....

  • What a gas. Yet another fabulous capability of the GNX!!!
  • I hope this is ok but if not I am sure I will be told. I live in Bellevue and I have a gnx3 that is 3 months old and I am not able to use it as much as I thought I would. I am always gone because of my job (Railroad). If you are looking for one of these let me no and I am sure we can work something out. Thanks.
